Hi guys! I’m Jack Legon, your new VP Student Activities. At my time in reading I have been on a JCR, have been a sports scholar, have regularly competed in BUCS, have been president of the kickboxing club and have been on several other committees also. So I know how you all feel!
This year I have a lot of plans to hopefully increase the experience for you all. With it being the Olympics coming up we are pushing a big Olympic initiative called ‘Be a Champion’ and we are looking for three student ambassadors to help run the scheme. However, this is not just about sport! Sport plays a big role in the Olympics but there is so much more to it, our three student ambassadors will fill the roles of sport, sustainability and arts and culture, so get in touch to find out more.
On top of this we are hosting a sport relief mile on the 25th March (keep ears peeled for more details) and we have the ‘give it a go’ scheme running again to open up all our clubs helping them to show what they have to offer! There’s also a cheeky £100 for every club that gets involved with that!
This is just a taste of the year, much more to unveil as the term progresses. Get in contact with me if you have any questions or ideas! Jack

I’m the Student Activities Manager and have worked at RUSU since May 2005. My main responsibilities are to manage the Activities team, the lovely bunch of people on this page with me and to look after the student media and volunteering. My other roles include monitoring all events run by clubs and setting the Activities budgets. Unless you get into trouble or you probably won’t need to see me much throughout the year. But if you can’t get hold of John, Jack or Trish I’m happy to help.
My role is to help support all clubs develop through coaching, funding and promoting events and fixtures.
I work with RU:On Sports TV show to try and get every club featured, whether it be matches, training or an interview so if you have a big event get in touch.
I also run the coaching in the community programme and we are looking for new coaches to help local primary school children.
Trish is our Finance guru who helps out all the clubs with petty cash claims, entering invoices for payments for such things as kits, equipment and coaching she also takes all clubs deposits
Trish is also very good at haggling with coach companies to gain the best price for clubs and has built up some good links with local companies so feel free to use her contacts and skills.
All of us are based in The Hub, RUSU.

The Reading University Knights or Knights for short is the brand new name of all the sports teams at the university and ushers in an exciting new era for sport at Reading.
Under the Reading Knights banner we are creating more pride around campus about the sporting success of our teams and increasing the media coverage on campus. We are also developing our events such as Varsity (which this year is against a stronger sporting university Oxford Brookes) and programmes we offer to make the University of Reading the best for sport.
We have set each club and teams targets to help
Reading achieve the aim of being a top 25 university in BUCS and regarded as the Best University for Sport in the South east. We are linking up with local sports clubs to improve the standard of coaching we receive. These include Reading Rockets Basketball club, Reading Hockey Club, Reading Wildcats Lacrosse Club and Redingensians Rugby Club.
We are also working with many more national
Governing bodies including england netball, england Squash and Racquetball, The Lawn Tennis Association, Berks and Bucks FA and The Rugby Football League amongst many others.
Throughout the year you will see brand new events and merchandise to develop the Knights brand. don’t forget to join our Facebook group ‘Reading University Knights’
What is BUCS?BUCS stands for BRITISH UnIVeRSITIeS And COLLeGeS SPORT and is the national body of student sport.
BUCS features around 146 universities and colleges which compete in 48 sports.
each university is awarded points on how well they do in their leagues, cups, regattas and individual championships with the majority of BUCS competitions being played on a Wednesday afternoon.
However, several events are on a weekend or based over a couple of days during the year including the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships which this year is being held as the test event for the London 2012 Olympic stadium in east London.
How does it work?Where you finish in leagues, cups, individual competitions and the level that you are competing at depends on the number of points that Reading gain, for example our Men’s Rugby 1st team won the South eastern 1a league and received 26 points but our Men’s Squash 3rd team also won their league and received only 10 points as they were in the south eastern 3a League
The BUCS website also hosts a complete points breakdown for the past academic year.
Our aims for this year1. Top 25 finish
2. Achieve over 1000 points
3. Beat Portsmouth, who are currently ranked 1st in the South eastern Conference excluding London universities
You will be forever hearing the word BUCS around campus and from you fellow sports club members, so we thought we would give you a break down of what BUCS actually is.

Reading Sports Competing In BUCS
Last year Reading slipped down to 31st from 28th in the BUCS tables. This was mainly due to a poor cup run. It wasn’t all doom and gloom, several teams excelled including the three new teams entered into BUCS.
Lacrosse Men’s 1st Team enjoyed a successful debut season finishing second in their league and gaining promotion plus reaching the Conference Cup final.
Squash Men’s 3rd Team went one better than Lacrosse by winning their league and setting up a grudge match this season with the Men’s 2nd Team.
Our best new team by far were the Riding Team who reached the national Championship final and narrowly finished 2nd but had the top rider in the country.
Some other success stories include the Rugby Union Club who dominated many matches by winning by over 50 points, the 1st Team is now in the BUCS Premier South B and are aiming on at least staying there. The 2nd and 3rd Teams only narrowly missed out on their well deserved promotions by the tricky tactics Portsmouth and Chichester Universities.
One club that turned things around were the Women’s Football Club, who were nonexistent at the end of the 2009/10 season. A great committee have led this club around and they now have two teams.
Review of the Year
But once again the best performance came from our Boat Club especially the women’s section who dominated at every BUCS event they competed in. The Club achieved so much that four crews were selected to represent Great Britain in the european University Games and I’m pleased to announce that all four came home with a medal. Keep watching Sports TV as they will be interviewing some of the medallists very soon.
Last year was good but let’s make this year great!
