Week 1 10.01.14

Mountains

What is a mountain? What makes it different to a hill? There are five basic types of mountain. Write a paragraph about each one. (I found this website really helpful for this question!)

Use atlases or globes to locate:- 1. main mountains & ranges in the UK:- Mount Snowdon & Snodownia, Lake District, Ben Nevis 2. main mountains and ranges in the world:- Pyrenees, Himalayas & Mount Everest, Alps, Rocky Mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro. 3. Record continents/countries where these mountains

can be found.

Mountains are popular destinations for different people for many different reasons.

Some people may like to take part in skiing activities. Others may prefer to be more adventurous and climb and

conquer the mountain. Or even go paragliding…? Write a detailed account of at least TWO activities that

people take part in a mountain environment. You may want to include information on why it is a popular activity? The names of famous people who take part? The safety aspects...

(There may be other leisure pursuits not listed here. Feel free to research this and come up with one of your own!)

Volcanoes Give a description of the three main types of volcano:

(Composite, Dome and Shield) How is a volcano formed? What is the ring of fire? Which countries have been formed by volcanoes? Describe at least ONE famous volcano (but not Vesuvius … that is next week’s homework!!)

Research the devastation caused by the Volcano at Pompeii. Present the information in a creative way. Here are some

ideas to help you get started:- Write an eye witness account Write a diary entry which is found with you when you are

discovered. You are a modern day archaeologist, working at the dig in

Pompeii. Perhaps you can think of something even more creative...

Finalise your project. Ensure it has a front cover with a title page and your name

is marked clearly. Contents page Introduction Does your project contain headings and sub-headings? Does your project contain any illustrations/diagrams/

pictures/photographs? Is your project written in your own words? Have you included a bibliography?
