Ula’s Life said a lot about her.

What does your life say about you?

Ula Motekat was an Old Dominion University professor who loved music, art, cats and nature. She was a regular at concerts and museums, and classical music was always playing in her home. When Ula died in 2016, her estate gift created a fund that annually benefits seven of her favorite Hampton Roads nonprofits. Connect your passions to the future, and let your life speak for you. 3A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM | BENJAMIN BRITTEN

Dear Friends of Virginia Opera:

What an exciting season we’ve had this year! A season that’s taken our audiences all over the world through varied story locations while

proving the glorious flexibility and durability of opera as an art form with various musical styles. And now, at this performance, we’re enjoying a 20th Century masterpiece based on a 400-year-old story about the complexities of love. Each season the Virginia Opera offers a wide range of operatic repertory; this year is clearly no exception. And neither is next season.

Subscribers have now received in the mail the announcement of next season, the 2018-2019 Season. In the recent information sent to you, you have seen that we put together a wonderful season that includes repertory signifying the Best of the Best! But what does that mean, the best of the best? Next season includes two audience favorites performed extensively around the world, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Puccini's Madama Butterfly, as well as one opera never before performed by Virginia Opera (Kurt Weill’s Street Scene – which made a smashing Broadway debut in the 1940s), and one opera (The Elixir of Love) that our company has not produced in a number of years yet ranks as one of the top 25 most performed operas. So, in the context of Virginia Opera’s producing the best of the best, next season fits the bill.

In next season, we have selected titles that offer great musical theater experiences in both comedy and high drama, in genres in which we have had significant experience

over the past 43 years. You will not want to miss it. SO SUBSCRIBE NOW!! There are many reasons (and benefits) to be a part of next season and very few reasons not to. You will not want to miss any one of next season’s operas. Being a subscriber is the best way to ensure that will happen.

Also, we would be grateful to have you be a part of Virginia Opera’s New Money Challenge Grant. An anonymous donor has offered $200,000 in matching funds to brand-new contributors and increased contributions from existing contributors. If you can help, now is the time to do so. We wish to raise the “new money” $200,000 by Opening Night of Lucia di Lammermoor. Thanks for your consideration of a new gift to our company. Please help ensure Virginia Opera’s ability to produce the quality opera that you’ve enjoyed for so many years; we need you now. All of the arts face many challenges these days, and this campaign is one way to help keep opera coming to our three mainstage venues.

Both subscribing and contributing help ensure the Opera’s on-going commitment to excellence. The Opera needs your on-going support as a subscriber (RENEW NOW!) and your generosity with a tax-deductible contribution (Support the Challenge Grant!). It is great to have you as a member of the Virginia Opera family.

Sincerely,

4 VIRGINIA OPERA 2017–2018 SEASON

Welcome to today’s performance of Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream! One of the twentieth-century’s most important and versatile musicians, English composer Benjamin Britten is of unquestionable significance for his contributions to the operatic repertory. To open

the Aldeburgh Festival in June 1960, Britten, with Peter Pears, chose the daunting task of adapting Shakespeare’s Dream for his 11th opera (of sixteen). To date Virginia Opera has produced only one previous Britten opera (The Turn of the Screw, 1989-1990 Season), and with a gap of over 25 years we’re thrilled to finally introduce this highly entertaining work to our audiences!

A few composers have successfully tackled operatic adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays—Verdi (Falstaff, Otello, Macbeth), Gounod (Roméo et Juliette), Purcell (The Fairy Queen), Thomas (Hamlet)—but none of them have actually retained the Bard’s words, sung in the original language. Benjamin Britten describes his almost impossible task:

“In writing opera, I have always found it very dangerous to start writing the music until the words are more or less fixed…with “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the first task was to get it into manageable shape, which basically entailed simplifying and cutting an extremely complex story—one can only hope that one hasn’t lost too much, but since the sung word takes so much longer than the spoken word, to have done the complete “Midsummer Night’s Dream” would have produced an opera as long as “The Ring”…I do not feel in the least guilty at having cut the play in half. The original Shakespeare will survive.”

Having settled the immense challenges of adapting Shakespeare’s text, Britten next turned to creating a musical atmosphere and orchestral texture for each of the three different worlds of the play: the world of the Fairies (harps, celesta, and percussion), the world of the human lovers (strings and woodwinds), and the world of the Rustics, or mechanicals (brass and bassoon). It’s an incredibly demanding score for the orchestra, with glissando chords representing

ADAM TURNER

the slumbering forest, virtuosic trumpet solos accompanying Puck’s acrobatics, and numerous moments of string ‘divisi’—solo moments for every individual string player. And exploring this score with the musicians of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra has been (and continues to be) an utter delight!

As you will find later in your program book, this large cast features prominently many young singers from our Herndon Foundation Emerging Artists Program (and even a few returning graduates of the program). These talented performers represent the next generation of opera’s stars, and we are immensely proud of their dedication and exceptional contributions to our company. You will also notice our collaboration with students of The Governor’s School for the Arts Vocal Music Department, playing the roles of the Fairies, represented by thirteen incredibly gifted young women. As you enjoy today’s performance, please recognize that you are very likely catching an early glimpse of the brightest stars of the future!

“Music demands…from a listener…some preparation, some effort, a journey to a special place, saving up for a ticket, some homework on the program perhaps, some clarification of the ears and sharpening of the instincts. It demands as much effort on the listener’s part as the other two corners of the triangle, this holy triangle of composer, performer and listener.” - Benjamin Britten (“On Receiving the First Aspen Award”)

With today’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I hope you heed Britten’s appeal for your participation as an active listener! “Lean forward” and allow your soul to be stirred by the compelling storytelling and otherworldly score. Thank you for your generous support and continued patronage, and please enjoy today’s performance!

Sincerely,

Adam Turner

7A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM | BENJAMIN BRITTEN

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Winter can be cold, damp, dreary and just all around miserable. Today’s performance is the cure: a Valentine of a story that tumbled out of Shakespeare’s astonishing brain more than 400 years

ago, from Virginia Opera with love to our cherished audience.

All of these characters will be familiar to you, so open up to Benjamin Britten’s beautiful score, replete with tone paintings and atmospheric harmonies that give us a new sense of Shakespeare’s fairies (the fairies in the children’s chorus are ethereal and pure creatures here—poised to bring order to the madness that is love). Contrast the seemingly simple tunes of the rustics, led by the unfortunate Bottom, with the romantic music of the lovers. This performance is designed for escape to the woods of Athens, and the shadowy glens of our imaginations.

What a season we have had, from the majestic grandeur and tragedy of Saint-Saëns’ Samson and Delilah set in the Holy Lands, to the American Wild West through the eyes of an Italian genius in Puccini’s Girl of the Golden West. Stay tuned for our last production of the season: Lucia di Lammermoor, Donizetti’s deeply tragic opera set in 17th century Scotland as imagined by Sir Walter Scott in the 19th century. (This season has been catnip to me, an English Literature professor by profession.)

It is a privilege to support performances of such depth and beauty. The Boards of Virginia Opera know how lucky we are. Our role is a labor of love, and we know it has never been as crucial as it is right now.

Keeping world-class opera, the most complex and expensive of the art forms, alive will always be challenging. Fortunately, we are committed to finding ways to fund and sustain artistic excellence as we have done for more than forty years.

One of our most important goals is to cultivate the audiences of the future. (In fact, we’ve set a goal to have the youngest opera audience in the country by 2025.) To that end, our education programs are essential, and you should know that outstanding young artists in our highly competitive Herndon Foundation Emerging Artists Program perform in schools near and far, bringing the magic of opera to children who otherwise might never see or hear an opera singer up close. (Please consider underwriting this effort next year—and bring your younger friends to a performance!)

Every chance I get, I remind people that excellent regional opera companies are few and far between, and we are blessed to have one of the best here in Virginia. You can help in so many ways--by subscribing, bringing guests, and through your donations. Please be as generous as you can. And don’t forget there is no more powerful way to help than to spread the word.

Yours,

Elisabeth Muhlenfeld Wollan

12 VIRGINIA OPERA 2017–2018 SEASON

ABOUT VIRGINIA OPERA

Virginia Opera Association, Inc., in its 43rd year of operation, is known and respected nationwide for the identification and presentation of the finest young artists, for the musical and dramatic integrity of its productions, and for the ingenuity and variety of its education and outreach programs. The Company has a working budget of $5.3 million with over 28 mainstage performances, reaching nearly 50,000 attendees. In March of 1994, by unanimous vote of the Virginia General Assembly, Virginia Opera was named The Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia in recognition of the organization’s contribution to the Commonwealth and to the world of opera.

Organized in 1974 by founding chair Edythe C. Harrison, Virginia Opera was launched with two productions in the Norfolk Center Theater. Shortly thereafter, Peter Mark was appointed Artistic Director, a position he held for over 35 years. Peter Mark was named Artistic Director Emeritus in 2012. Russell P. Allen, appointed President and CEO in 2011, currently leads the company – returning to Virginia Opera after six years as General Manager from 1994-2000. In 2013, Virginia Opera appointed Adam Turner (formerly Resident Conductor)as Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor- a move endorsed by many as bringing exciting new artistic energy to the company.

Virginia Opera’s statewide expansion began by producing in Richmond in 1977 with the encouragement of Governor Mills Godwin and Mrs. T. Fleetwood (Anna) Garner. Under their leadership, The Richmond Friends of Opera was formed to present Virginia Opera productions annually in the capital city. By 1983, the Richmond and Central Virginia Board of Virginia Opera formed and a Richmond office was opened. In November 1992, the Company presented its first mainstage performance at the Center for the Arts at George Mason University in Fairfax. This development was hailed as “one

of the major local operatic events of the year” by The Washington Post, and deemed a special day in music history for the Washington D.C. area by Opera News.Virginia Opera has presented some of the na-tion’s most promising young singers on its stages including Diana Soviero, Jeannine Altmeyer, John Aler, Rockwell Blake, Renée Fleming, Bar-bara Dever, Frank Porretta, Grant Youngblood, Fabiana Bravo, Lawrence Brownlee, Nmon Ford, Jeniece Goldbourne and Mary Elizabeth Williams. Attracting acclaimed directors from the theater and opera world, audiences have en-joyed the work of Gian Carlo Menotti, Gordon Davidson, Greg Ganakas, Arvin Brown, Dorothy Danner, Lillian Groag, Sam Helfrich and Ste-phen Lawless, among others, in new productions designed by the nation’s top opera and theater designers. Virginia Opera has continued its tra-dition of commissioning/co-commissioning new works as illustrated by the world premieres of A Christmas Carol, Harriet - The Woman Called Mo-ses, Simón Bolivar, Pocahontas, and, most recently, Rappahannock County.

The company produces four mainstage pro-ductions including performances at the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, Dominion Arts Center in Richmond, and at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax. Virginia Opera is the only opera company to perform a full season of opera in multiple mainstage venues and to reach more than 150,000 students and community members each year through its innovative Education and Community Outreach Program. Building upon past accomplishments, the 2017-2018 Season features an exciting level of artistry and diverse programming. While remaining committed to securing the highest caliber of vocal talent, the Opera will invite brilliant conductors and di-rectors, assisted by the next generation of gifted artists, to challenge audiences and create new opera experiences.

15A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM | BENJAMIN BRITTEN

SYNOPSIS

A Midsummer Night's Dream

ACT 1Nighttime in a forest near the city of Athens. Oberon, King of the Fairies, is in an argument with his queen, Tytania, who has kid-napped the son of an Indian king to keep for herself. Oberon, how-ever, also wants the boy to serve as his squire. Oberon calls for his servant Puck, commanding him to fetch a flower, whose juice, when applied to Tytania’s sleeping eyes, will cause her to fall madly in love with the first living creature seen upon awakening.

Two young citizens of Athens (Lysander and Hermia) enter breath-lessly. Hermia is distraught because Theseus, Duke of Athens, has ruled in favor of her father’s plan that she marry Demetrius, an-other young Athenian. In desperation, she and Lysander have fled the city, hoping to escape the edict of Theseus by eloping in the distant home of Lysander’s aunt. As they exit, another pair of young Athenians enter (Demetrius and Helena). Helena has told Demetrius of Lysander and Hermia’s elopement, spurring him to the woods in pursuit of his fiancé. Demetrius bluntly tells Helena she should stop following him because he can never love her. Exasperated, Deme-trius runs off, while Helena doggedly tags along. Oberon, having witnessed the argument, decides to work magic on Demetrius to make him return Helena’s love.

The forest is momentarily silent before six rough-hewn villagers en-ter, a group of “rustics” or simple tradesmen. They have met in the forest to work in secret on a theatrical project: they hope to present a performance of the tragedy Pyramus and Thisbe at the imminent royal wedding of Theseus to his bride Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons. Quince, the carpenter, describes the play and assigns a role to each man. Bottom, the weaver, is to play Pyramus, and Flute, the bellows-mender, is assigned the role of Thisbe. Quince hands out the rest of the actors’ parts, directing them to learn all their lines. They agree to return later that day for a rehearsal.

Lysander enters with Hermia, falling fast asleep. Puck enters; see-ing the sleeping Lysander, he concludes that this must be Deme-trius, the man to whom he is to administer the flower nectar as Oberon ordered. Quietly, he sprinkles the love-nectar on Lysander’s eyes, then leaves to report to the Fairy King. Demetrius and Helena return, but Demetrius, at the end of his rope, commands Helena to stop following him and runs off. Helena, left alone, suddenly spots Lysander on the ground. Lysander sits up, wide awake now and under the spell of Puck’s flower nectar, he immediately de-clares his passionate love for her. Helena angrily assumes that he is mocking her with false words of love, exiting in a huff while Lysander follows after. Hermia awakens from a terrible dream, to find herself all alone.

As afternoon shadows lengthen, Tytania enters with her retinue of fairies, ready to rest. Once Tytania is asleep, Oberon approaches her as the fairies disperse. He squeezes the flower-nectar into her eyes, ensuring that she will fall in love with the next living thing she sees.

INTERMISSION

ACT 2Later that night, the rustics return to the forest to begin rehearsing. As the rehearsal proper begins, Puck flies in, greatly interested in these mortals’ strange doings. Puck is suddenly struck with inspi-ration: he is going to cast a spell on Bottom, turning him into an ass. Upon his sudden transformation, Bottom’s companions stare open-mouthed before fleeing in terror. Certain that they’re nearby and determined not to give them any satisfaction, Bottom launches into a raucous folk-song, singing at the top of his lungs. His off-key

braying performance awakens Tytania who, under Oberon’s spell, falls immediately in love with him. The fairies help lead him to a bed of honeysuckle and ivy, where he falls asleep in Tytania’s arms.

Oberon is delighted with Puck’s choice of a love-object for his wife. But when Demetrius enters with Hermia, Oberon’s delight turns to dismay while a greatly confused Puck says this is a different Athe-nian. As Demetrius sleeps, Oberon produces the magic flower and applies the nectar to his eyes, ensuring he will transfer his love to Helena when he awakens. Helena and Lysander enter, and at that moment, Demetrius wakes up, sees Helena and, to everyone’s sur-prise, instantly declares his passionate love for her. This is too much for Helena, who concludes that all of them are amusing themselves by tormenting her. A scene of comic misunderstandings ensues. Helena, assuming that Hermia is in on the joke, attacks her friend. Lysander and Demetrius begin arguing over which of them loves Helena more. Hermia, shocked and hurt by Helena’s accusations, turns on her, accusing her of having stolen Lysander. The men re-solve to fight with swords to win Helena’s hand, then stalk off to do battle. Hermia, now at the boiling point, chases after Helena.

Oberon and Puck, having witnessed all this, form a plan. Puck, who is amazed by the foolishness of these mortals, is to keep the two men separated so that they cannot hurt each other. Puck, imitating first one’s voice and then the other’s, leads them farther and farther apart. Once the urge to fight has been replaced by weariness, Puck lures all four to gather. Exhausted from all the discord and confu-sion, each falls deeply asleep.

INTERMISSION

ACT 3Dawn of the following morning. Oberon tells Puck that, as he has now taken possession of the changeling boy, it is time to remove the spell from Tytania. As the Fairy Queen rouses, she tells her husband of the strange dream she had of being in love with an ass. The sleeping couples also begin to stir. Sitting up groggily, the young people are unsure whether they are awake or still dreaming. Lysander’s spell has been broken, meaning that he is once again in love with Hermia. However, Demetrius, now permanently under Oberon’s spell, is in love with Helena for the first time. Bottom also awakens, released from the spell, wondering whatever happened to his fellow thespians. With a sense of awe, he recalls having had a strange dream; a dream so bizarre he cannot find the words to describe it. He wanders off, musing that the dream ought to be set down as a ballad. Quince, Flute and the other rustics now enter, distraught over the mystery of Bottom’s transformation and disap-pearance. They fret that if he is not available to play the part of Pyramus, the performance cannot go on. They are greatly relieved when Bottom now joins them, bringing them news: the Duke’s din-ner has concluded and they have been invited to perform their play. They set out for the palace.

Back in Athens, Theseus and Hippolyta happily anticipate their wedding-day. The two couples enter, kneeling before the Duke. When Thesus observes the obvious happiness of Hermia and Ly-sander, he generously reverses his prior ruling, allowing them to wed. Calling for after-dinner amusement, Theseus invites the play-ers to give their performance of Pyramus and Thisbe. As the hour of midnight is tolled, all couples retire to bed. When they have exited, the woodland fairies make a stealthy entrance, singing that though the night is their time to frolic, the household will not be disturbed. Puck joins them, followed by Oberon and Tytania. The fairies unite in a song of blessing to Theseus, his bride and their guests. All the fairies leave except for Puck, who addresses all those who have watched the events of the story unfold. His advice: anyone who has been offended should just consider all that’s happened to have been a mere dream.

Have you ever wondered about what inspiredcreative geniuses like Verdi, Wagner, Rossini and Puccini

to write such bold and beautiful work?

Think about the streets they walked on.The churches they worshipped in.

The taverns, restaurants and shops.

We can all take inspiration from the same places. After enjoying a performance of “The Barber of Seville”

you can take an evening flight and be in Seville in 12 hours. There you can visit the stunning Parque de María Luisa,

tour the Real Alcázar, or stop at El Rinconcillo, where they’ve been serving tapas since 1670.

And while you’re there, you’ll want to visit Bon Vivant to get your hair styled by a modern-day barber of Seville.

Great composers know that inspiration is a renewable resource. You just need to know the right places to find it.

Let us take you there.

47A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM | BENJAMIN BRITTEN

ADAM TURNERPrincipal Conductor & Artistic Advisor

American conductor Adam Turner is quickly gaining momentum as a conductor to watch on international opera stages. Currently in his fourth season as Principal Conductor and

Artistic Advisor at Virginia Opera, Maestro Turner garners critical acclaim for the breadth of his repertoire, artistic vision, and polished technique. Of his recent performance of Der Freischütz with Virginia Opera, Opera News hailed: “Conductor Adam Turner…ensured crackling rhythms as much as lyrical spaciousness, resulting in a performance that felt vital and spontaneous throughout.”

Continuing in his post at Virginia Opera, Maestro Turner will conduct performances of Samson and Delilah and A Midsummer Night’s Dream during the 2017-2018 season. On top of his productions at Virginia Opera, he will also conduct Händel’s Messiah with the Virginia Symphony and Theo Popov’s The Halloween Tree, which he conducted last season as well, with American Lyric Theater at Arizona State University. Last season, Mo. Turner conducted Three Decembers with Hawaii Opera Theatre, a Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program Holiday Concert with Washington National Opera, Carmen with Central City Opera, and Der Freischütz and a double bill of The Seven Deadly Sins/Pagliacci in his post as Principal Conductor at Virginia Opera. As the inaugural recipient of the Julius Rudel/Kurt Weill Conducting Fellowship in 2015, he collaborated with renowned conductor John DeMain on Washington National Opera’s production of Kurt Weill’s final stage composition Lost in the Stars.

Other recent guest conducting engagements include: Roméo et Juliette at Lyric Opera Baltimore, Sweeney Todd at Hawaii Opera Theatre and Eugene Opera; Le nozze di Figaro, Dead Man Walking, Carmen, La bohème, Man of La Mancha and Oklahoma! with Central City Opera; Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Carmen, Brigadoon, My Fair Lady, Camelot, and Britten’s biblically inspired Noye’s Fludde during his tenure as Resident Conductor at Ash Lawn Opera; and Der fliegende Holländer, La bohème, H.M.S. Pinafore, Carmen, Ariadne auf Naxos, The Mikado, Carousel, and Camelot for Virginia Opera.

During regular appearances with Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony, Mr. Turner conducted Young People’s Concerts and additional outreach activities. His leadership of Virginia Opera’s annual “Opera in the Park” series, featuring both of the aforementioned orchestras in their respective communities, reaches nearly 10,000 attendees across the Commonwealth of Virginia with a program of opera and popular hits, ensuring the next generation of prospective opera lovers, and bridging the gap between popular and classical music genres. He appeared in concert with singer-songwriter Ben Folds, conducting “The Orchestra Experience” during a recent tour stop in Virginia Beach. Additionally, Maestro Turner conducted at the David Oistrakh Festival in Estonia, featuring appearances with the St. Petersburg Festival Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra, and the Kaiserslautern Symphony Orchestra.

Turner first gained recognition at age 25 during his tenure at Stadttheater Pforzheim in Germany while taking over conducting responsibilities of a production of Les Misérables. Musicals – Das Musicalmagazin, Germany’s premier musical theater publication lauded his work: “Les Mis reveals even here its magical effectiveness… The main reason for this is the performance of the orchestra, led by a young American conductor, Adam Turner, who brings to the piece a suspenseful drama that one does not always hear, even on the legendary, anniversary recording at the Royal Albert Hall. During the dramatic dialogues, he pushes the action forward but one is nonetheless able to understand every single word…he builds up the aria-like solos with great crescendos yet purposefully does not turn the first Thénardier-Song into a homely operetta number…” There, he also conducted Lehár’s Paganini and Cole Porter’s High Society.

Prior to his appointment as one of the youngest artistic leaders in Virginia Opera’s history, Turner proved he has a vision for the future of the industry as a member of the next generation of leaders while holding several administrative and music staff appointments at houses across the country including Seattle Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Central City Opera, Portland Opera, Tulsa Opera, Syracuse Opera, and Ash Lawn Opera. In these positions, Turner worked side-by-side with world-renowned maestri including Asher Fisch, Steuart Bedford, John DeMain, Gary Thor Wedow, and Broadway veteran Rob Fisher. Turner holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Morehead State University, and a Master of Music degree from The Catholic University of America. He furthered his training with internationally acclaimed conductors and pedagogues Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Marin Alsop, Jorma Panula, Gustav Meier, Kenneth Kiesler, and Kate Tamarkin.

HEATHER BUCKTytania

Praised by Opera News as “the kind of performer who makes it all look easy,” Heather Buck is best described by opera critic David Shengold as “a lithe and impactful actress with an uncommonly beautiful soprano for the

high-lying and testing repertory she serves.” In the 2017-18 season, Ms. Buck returns to New York City Opera for a reprisal of the title role in Argento’s monodrama Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night, and Alma Beers in Wouronin’s Brokeback Mountain, a role she first created with Teatro Real Madrid. She returns to Odyssey Opera as Joan of Arc in a semi-staged performance of Dello Joio’s The Trial at Rouen, and also retuns to Virginia Opera as Tytania in A Midsummer’s Night Dream.

In the 2016-17 season, Ms. Buck made her LoftOpera debut in a staged production of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, for which the New York Times wrote, “Ms. Buck was wonderful, her vocalism soaring, strong and pure,” and the Observer hailed her as “an astonishing actress with the face of the young Katharine Hepburn.” She also created the role of Ku in Paola Prestini’s Gilgamesh with Beth Morrison Projects, and Persephone in Wachner’s Rev. 23 at Prototype Festival. Ms. Buck sang as soloist in Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 5, with both the Washington Chorus at the Kennedy Center and Trinity Church Wall Street, and she joined Opera America’s New Works Forum at New York’s Town Hall. Ms. Buck recently sang in Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children and the American premiere of Lachenmann’s The Little Match Girl at Spoleto Festival USA, and she

reprised the Maid in Adès’ Powder Her Face with Teatro Arriaga Antzokia, Bilbao. She first performed the Maid for its American stage permiere with Aspen Opera Theater, and reprised the role with Brooklyn Philharmonic, Almeida Theatre (London), Aldeburgh Festival, Boston Modern Opera Projects, Opéra-Théâtre de Metz, and additionally filmed it for the BBC.

An exemplary interpreter of contemporary and modern repertoire, Ms. Buck received critical acclaim for her performance in Spoleto Festival USA’s American premiere of Walfgang Rihm’s monodrama Proserpina, which the Wall Street Journal described as “a vocal roller coaster, just over an hour long, in which the soprano never gets a break.” She created the title role in Charles Wuorinen’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories (NYCO), and also performed Isabella Linton in the world premiere recording of Carlisle Floyd’s Wuthering Heights (Florentine Opera), La Princesse in Glass’ Orphée(Pittsburgh Opera, Virginia Opera), Stella in Andre Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire (Washington National Opera), Medea in Dusapin’s Medeamaterial (Teatr Wielki), the Angel in the U.S. premiere of Dusapin’s Faustus: The Last Night (Spoleto Festival USA, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw), joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Nixon in China, and performed Lulu Baines in Florentine Opera’s Grammy awarded Elmer Gantry.

Heather Buck’s versatility allows her to shine equally in traditional repertoire. Of her debut performance with English National Opera in Die Zauberflöte, The Times of London wrote “The American soprano Heather Buck is quite a find as the Queen of Night: statuesque of bearing, surefire in the vocal stratosphere, and a powerfully ambiguous presence.” She has sung Queen of the Night with Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Calgary Opera, Arizona Opera, Florentine Opera, Virginia Opera, Opera Birmingham, Opera Delaware, and Wolf Trap Opera. Other roles include Musetta (La bohème), Leïla (Les pêcheurs de perles), Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), Gilda (Rigoletto), Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Adina (L’elisir d’amore), Baby Doe (The Ballad of Baby Doe), Juliette (Roméo et Juliette), Comtesse de Folleville (Il viaggio a Reims), and La Fée (Cendrillon).

He begins the season with his Virginia Opera debut as Sonora in La fanciulla del West and returns to the company later in the season as Demetrius in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His motto is: “I live not only for myself; but, for those who will come after and for those who wish to walk with me along the way.”
