How a ULC-S537 audit is carried out and how to read an inspection report.
Many people limit themselves to thinking that a certificate certifies that all tests and installation were in perfect working order.
In fact; a certificate has no value and is not even required in the ULCS537 standard. Only the inspection report is the document that confirms and allows users (engineers, general contractor, electrical contractor, customer and owner) to have a complete assessment of the fire alarm system.
In this presentation, we will discuss about smoke detector
ULC-S537 smoke detector requirement
Resume1) Technician needs to check components (dirt, paint, obstruction, sampling tube,
installation as per ULC-S524. etc.)
2) Technician need to test the detector opération with smoke spray not with a magnet
3) Technician need to check detector sensitivity via a tool or via panel. When we test the duct smoke detector we need to test also the air velocity.
4) If we use panel sensitivity, we need to make sure we have the real sensitivity not a scale.
5) If a detector got replace; we need to indicate the replacement date.
6) When all tests are complete, we have to put all information in the report.
7) If technician is testing a multi-sensor each sensor needs to be tested individually and all information should indicate in the report individually.
8) Finally technician needs to indicate his name, signature and date on his report.
The detector sensitivity shall not be measured using any device that administers an unmeasured concentration of smoke or other aerosol into the detector”

The Common Smoke Detector Testing Tool
Sprayed directly into detectors
Oily residue attracts dirt and dust
Contaminates detectors
Use the good tools / Smoke Detectors
“Acceptable methods of determining the smoke detector sensitivity are:
Manufacturer’s recommended test instrument, equipment, or method;
Installed control units or transponders designed to test the sensitivity of individual smoke detectors; or
Calibrated instruments that provide the operation as described in CAN/ULC-S529, Standard for Smoke Detectors for Fire Alarm Systems, for the purpose of testing smoke detector sensitivity.”

Drift CompensationThe Drift Compensation is built into the detector FW511 for a sensitivity value of 1.6 to 2.4 and is not performed by the panel. Drift compensation automatically adjusts for gradually increasing effects of dust and other accumulations of dirt in the detectors. It will adjust the thresholds to compensate for a detector going dirty according to the gradual change in the normal clean air value received. When it can no longer compensate for an increasingly dirty detector, a dirty detector trouble (contamination trouble) is indicated for that device. Our software 5.1.2 offer the sensitivity reading for customer with level 3 access.
