The Friendship Centre is a community centre for adults 50 years and older, which offers social, recreational, educational and volunteer opportunities. On any given month the Friendship Centre’s calendar is full with many excitingactivities, classes and trips that are open to everyone to attend. June 2009
marks the 25th anniversary of Seniors’ Month in Ontario. This year’s theme is “creating age-friendly communities”. The theme celebrates Ontario’s seniors and recognizes the tremendous contributions they make to our community.
Our state of the art kitchen serves fantastic meals on a weekly basis, including lunches, brunches, breakfasts and dinners. This is the perfect place to come
and get caught up with friends over a meal or to meet and greet other people in your community. Home Support Services also offers many fitness and recrea-
tion opportunities.
There truly is something for everyone at the Friendship Centre. The friendly staff are always available to show you around and answer any questions you
may have. Come out on June 19th at noon to our nearby Kinsmen Pavilion; the Friendship Centre is having a BBQ in honor of Seniors’ Month! This will be a
chance for people to showcase their talents. Application forms to perform in the show are available at the Centre. The Friendship Centre is also hosting many
Senior Games in the month of June so be sure to come out and show yoursupport! This is an excellent opportunity for everyone in the community to come check the Centre out and celebrate Seniors’ Month in style. A good time will be
had by all!

If you see a new face at the front desk soon please be sure to introduce yourself.
Emma Blackler has returned as Kids Klub Supervisor. Emma and her staff will be in the Pyramid Recreation Centre for the upcoming
summer months.
Welcome Patti P A G E 3
We have had a new face at our front desk reception area for the past four months,
her name is Patti Meidinger. Her role is Administrative Assistant. She brings ten
years of municipal experience with her. Her duties and responsibilities include:
customer service, financial support, frozen meal inventory, CIMS (entering Home
Support statistics), creation of policies and procedures, OHRS (provincial program
to provide data and statistics for funding), as well as policies and procedures.
Patti enjoys working with the public and the great employees at the Centre. Patti looks forward to a long
career with the Town of St. Marys and creating lasting friendships with the members of the Friendship
Centre and Home Support Community.
Farewell Tanya We would like to say farewell to our co-op student Tanya Costello. Her Placement was for the month of May. Tanya is planning on graduating from Recreation and Leisure at Niagara College this summer. We wish her the best of luck in future endeavors, and we thank her for her time here at the Centre.
Everyone here at the Friendship Centre would like toextend a huge THANK YOU to all of the ladies who came in and volunteered their time for quilting over the past year.
The Friendship Centre quilters are as follows: (Front left to right) Reta Hughes, Ella Switzer, Sophie Bradley, Libby
Wright, Eileen Crawford (Back left to right) Blanche Overholt, Betty Knight, Mavis Knapman, Jean Copeland, Annie Weersink. Absent: Doris Nairn, Shirley Mallalieu

! We would like to welcome all new members who have recently joined the Friendship Centre:
Karen Shackleton Marg Levy Michael Vonlepel Darcy Wheal Rick Wheal
The Stonetown Entertainers and Friendship Bell Ringers have concluded
another successful season. Our sincere appreciation goes to all who supported
our recent concerts. A warm note of thanks to all members for so much diligent
work during the past year. The choir will resume on Friday September 11 at
9:30am at the Centre. Wishing all a safe and happy summer!
The Friendship Bell Ringers welcomed a new director, Kim Taylor at the
beginning of the year. Kim has a vast experience ringing bells, both with the Bells
of St. Marys and recently with Bells Ablaze from Ingersoll. She has also taught
children with her young children choir, Twinkletones, and her preteen choir,
Belltones. She is now working on the other end of ages.
The Friendship Bell Ringers are practicing hard for the Spring Festival,
“Cinemagic.” Some of our music is being challenged to be movie music, but we
are sure we can put a movie spin on it.
We are actively looking for new additions to our bell choir. No experience
is needed. Kim is ready, willing and able to teach anyone to play bells. Two or
more bell ringers are needed, however, the more the merrier. Practice is
Wednesday mornings from 9:30 until
11:00 am, weather permitting. So come
out and try something new. First practice
will be Wednesday, September 9, 2009.

One night the 76 year old draws a

The 74 year old yells back "I don't know. I'll come up
and see."

Fitness Programs Can Not Operate with out Volunteer Support
St. Marys Home Support Services currently offers 7 SWIFT classes and 3 Sit and Fit class weekly. SWIFT or Staying, Well, Independent, Fit, Together is a one hour program consisting of warm up exercises, cardiovascular exercise, upper and lower body strengthening, balance and stretching. Sit & Fit consists of similar exercises that are adapted to be done sitting down. Both of these programs are led by volunteers who are trained through
the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. During a 36 hourtraining course volunteers will learn the fundamentals of the SWIFT program, and how to apply them to a class. Volunteers complete 20 hours of practical teaching and a take home assignment. During the practical training, trainee’s learn how to develop a routine and ways to work with diverse participants. Trainee’s receive encouragement and guidance from staff and fellow
fitness volunteers. Please consider this opportunity! Volunteers do not need to have past experience teaching, just a general interest in learning and being fit. St. Marys Home Support Services needs volunteers to maintain our current level of programs! Contact Jenny if you are considering this opportunity or if you would like to learn more about becoming a volunteer.
CHAP+AP
Cardiovascular Health Awareness Program + Action Plan or CHAP+AP is a new program under Wellness for
Seniors. This programs utilizes volunteers to offer free blood
pressure monitoring clinics. Volunteers give their time by
completing participant in-take forms, and assisting participants with an action plan to encourage healthy
living. CHAP +AP volunteers do not need to have experience in a medical
field but require the ability tomaintain confidentiality and
determine any conflict of interest. Volunteers receive 6 hours of formal
orientation to the CHAP+APprogram and on going guidance and
support of staff and fellowvolunteers. This a educational and
rewarding opportunity. Anyoneinterested in learning more about this
new program should contact Jenny Mikita or Kelly Flanagan.
