Conference Speakers

Carlo Castelli is an architect and masterplanner. He holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture with distinction. In 2011 he completed a Master’s in ‘City Design and Social Science’ at the London School of Economics and Social Science.His experience as an architect spans across sectors and includes important contributions to the design process of internationally renowned buildings such as the Tennis Centre and International Broadcasting Centre for Rio Olympics 2016 and the 437m-high West Tower in Guangzhou, China.

His focus is now on master plans at urban and regional scale as one of the directors of the AECOM Strategic Planning and Design group, leading multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholder engagement processes. Recent projects include technical and strategic advisory to the National Railway Company FS Sistemi Urbani on the development agreement for rail sites in Milan and a Concept Masteplan for KKIA Airport City in Riyadh.

Prior to founding Blengini Ghirardelli Associati, Agostino Ghirardelli worked for several international firms including Massimiliano Fuksas in Paris and Rome and Studio Libeskind, both in New York and Milan, on a range of architectural projects worldwide.

Some of the major projects he managed over the past decade include the design and construction phases of the residential project Rb1 and the Central Tower TCC, both part of the CityLife master plan in Milan, and Tor Di Valle, a 287,000 sqm business park surrounding AS ROMA’s new football stadium in Rome. Agostino received his MARCH from the University of Genoa in 1999.

Alongside his architectural practice, Agostino speaks publicly on architecture and urban planning at international confer-ences and events.

Armando Borghi is the Chief Executive Officer of CityLife S.p.A., a position he has held since August 2014. In addition to his leadership role at CityLife, Armando serves as a Professor of Real Estate Finance and Real Estate Professor in the Ada Bocconi School of Management.

Prior to joining CityLife, Amando was as the Group CEO of Gabetti Property Solutions and Chairman and CEO of Patrigest S.p.A., Grimaldi Franchising, Gabetti Franchising, Professione Casa Franchising, Tree Real Estate, CEO of Gabetti Agency and Abaco. Armando is a member of RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), is a board member of Assoimmobiliare, and has authored several books on Real Estate Finance through Bocconi University.

Prof. Roberto Camagni is Full Professor of Urban Economics and Assessment of urban transformations, Politecnico di Milano and Decano (Dean) of the Faculty of Architecture and Society and Director of the Research Unit on Regional and Urban Economics. Prof. Camagni served as Head of the Department for Urban Affairs at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Rome, under the Prodi Government, from 1997-98.

Camagni is Past President of the European Regional Science Association (2003-2005) and of the Italian Regional Science Association (1990-93). He is an author of more than 150 international scientific publications and of a textbook of Urban Economics in Italian, French and Spanish. He has worked for the EU Commission, OECD, DATAR, Italian Ministries and the EU ESPON project.

In 2017, Camagni was elected Fellow of the Regional Science Association Interna-tional. In 2010, he was awarded the Prize of the ERSA / European Investment Bank and in 2008 the Prize of the Fondazione Confalonieri, Milan, for his studies in urban sustainable development.

Passionate about solving complex urban problems, with particular expertise in the integration of infrastructure with urban growth and regeneration, Ian has been at the forefront of growing Gensler’s Firmwide Planning and Urban Design Practice.

As Managing Director of the London office, Ian oversees projects across the UK and Europe, bringing a deep understanding of the various political, commercial and social drivers that influence planning delivery. Most recently, Ian has been at the forefront of the national debate on the future of aviation in the UK with the London Britannia Airport project.

Ian is passionate about game changing design and has led two award-winning concept projects for London. In 2011, the Thames River Park was awarded the ‘Best Conceptual Project’ and the ‘Mayors Award for Planning Excellence’ at the London Planning Awards, and again in 2015, the London Underline won the ‘Best Conceptual Project’.

A regular speaker and panellist, both in the UK and internationally, Ian is often called upon to help define the future direction of urban growth and transformation. He studied at the University of Westminster, earning a diploma in Urban Planning Implementation and BA (Hons) in Urban Planning Studies.

Sabine Lebesque studied Architectural History at the University of Amsterdam, lived in Barcelona in 1989/90 and got passionate by how cities and places transform and develop. She worked for the Netherlands Architecture Institute until 2000, producing exhibitions and publications, such as Yona Friedman Structures serving the Unpredictable. Since 2000, she has worked for the City of Amsterdam Department of Land and Development, responsible for the annual publication and website Gebouwd in Amsterdam. Sabine is a specialist in waterfront development, author of Around Amsterdam’s IJ Banks (2011). She is a member of the city’s Investors Office Residential as well as the Team Spatial Quality.

Thomas has 10 years of experience in real estate. He is heading AEW’s European asset & development management team of Logistis, a EUR 2bn pan-European logistic fund. Prior to joining AEW, Thomas worked at Allianz Real Estate & Tishman Speyer, where he was responsible for real estate investments and asset management in Europe and Latin America. Thomas is a graduate of the European Business School in Germany as well as the University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Paul Jansen, Cities Market Leader, Sr. Urban Economist, Arup

Dr. Paul Jansen currently combines various positions: Cities Market Leader at Arup Amsterdam; Founding Partner of the Innovation Area Development Partnership (IADP); and Owner of Caudata Advice. Arup is a leading global engineering consultant and actively involved in developing science parks, its buildings, incubation centres, and innovation areas.

The IADP group strengthens forces of 8 companies (ARUP, Caudata, Kadans Science Partner, KCAP, PT Finance, Royal HaskoningDHV, UNStudio, Zjak Consult) in (re)developing areas of innovation, science parks, industrial innovation areas, and modern working environments from a resilient and integrated perspective. The physical environment on the one hand and social and networking environment on the other are developed and managed in close relationship, both considering economic risks and benefits.

Thanks to his great experience in the fields of marketing and integrated communication, Carlo has worked as a manager at some of the major companies in this business sector. In particular, he supervised different projects to promote important public institutions of the Triveneto area.

Carlo joined Ikon in 2016 to develop new projects in the field of Virtual Reality, focusing on the marketing of the proposed solutions developed therein.

John Ratcliffe is Head of Strategic Foresight at Hillbreak, a specialist consultancy in the field of Built Environment Sustainability. He is also President of The Futures Academy, which he founded in 2000. Until 2009, he was a Director of the Dublin Institute of Technology, where he remains as Emeritus Professor. In the past he has served as Secretary-General of the World Futures Studies Federation and Vice President of the European Futurists Conference.

A prolific author and public speaker, he has acted as a consultant to countries, cities, corporations, colleges and communities in the area of strategic foresight, and is currently conducting several projects on the future of sustainable cities and sustainable real estate development. His present work focuses on the field of “Anticipatory Leadership through Strategic Foresight”; and, familiarly, his favourite adage is Einstein’s: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Davide Rimonta is responsible for Real Estate Transformation projects of UniCredit Business Integrated Solutions, the Unicredit group’s global service company. He coordinates all the branch network optimization and city plan projects, smart-working implementations in the Italian perimeter, as well as shaping the strategy and working on all the implementation related to ‘digital real estate’, which means all the projects positioned at the intersection of digital technologies with the ‘bricks and mortar’ world.

Davide joined UniCredit in 2014. Previously, he was Head of Real Estate Enhancement and Development at Poste Italiane, which he joined in 2011 after having spent more than eight years in consulting firms, including Accenture and Gartner Consulting.

Stephen Platts, Director of Regeneration, Southwark Council

Stephen is responsible for the delivery of major projects including Elephant and Castle, Aylesbury, Canada Water and Bermondsey, London Bridge and Bankside, and the Old Kent Road. He is a Board member of the Local Education Partnership with responsibility for the delivery of the schools expansion programme and other major capital investment projects including the new library at Camberwell, leisure centre at Elephant and Castle and new housing. Housing Regeneration and Inward Investment is also within his portfolio of responsibility, which covers housing estate regeneration and renewal, the Southwark Regeneration in Partnership Programme and general inward investment opportunities. Stephen has been Director of Regeneration for 6 years.
