4 welcome

It’s time to say farewell to 2012 and all it brought - good and bad - and look forward to a fresh beginning in 2013. This is the time of year when we all sit back and take stock and resolve to make the year ahead a better one. However, before you make your New Year’s Resolutions take some advice from Claire Wilson who urges you to make them realistic ones that you may have a chance of sticking to come the end of January!

Gearing up for the new season ahead we look at some of the fashion for Spring/Summer. I’m fully aware of the winter chill, so you may not be ready to fully embrace what lies in store just yet, but do take inspiration as you transcend the seasons - perhaps some stripes or a bit of retro fifties style!

We’ve some fab beauty buys, as well as body and hair treatments for you to read about and perhaps treat yourself to in the New Year. Or, as Ciara Daly suggests, why not sign up for a make-up course and learn a different skill in 2013!

We also bring you some new season interiors as well as a run down of the best events and weddings that have been taking place throughout Northern Ireland.

So, from all of the team at Ulster Life we hope you have a crackin’ Christmas and New Year and we’ll be back refreshed and revived in the New Year.

UTV haS aNNOUNCED a series of 12 special one-hour programmes entitled “Lesser Spotted Culture” which will be shown on UTV starting mid-January to mark Derry-Londonderry’s year as City of Culture in 2013.

In each monthly programme, presenter Joe Mahon, the host of UTV’s popular, long-running series, Lesser Spotted Ulster, will explore events with particular significance or resonance for the city, in terms of its own unique history, heritage and culture.

The first episode of the series will air in January, featuring coverage of the opening events and a flavour of what is to come in the months ahead. This will include “The Music

Promise” where every child in the city will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument; “Portrait of a City” which will provide one of the most ambitious digital archives of a community ever conceived and a tour of some of the city’s most outstanding architectural features – new and old.

Speaking at the launch in Custom House Restaurant, Joe Mahon said: “A fabulous line-up of artistic and cultural activities has been planned for this year, many of them of international importance and prestige. Our series will highlight some of these events and put them in the context of the history, culture and natural environment of the city and surrounding areas.”

NiCE BUNS, NiCE LiFE is the brainchild of Suzi and Neil Houston, who began their business by producing cakes and cupcakes to order after Neil was made redundant and they had to think more seriously about their dream of being self employed. Before long, the decision to start teaching alongside was made.

“Baking seems to have become one of those dying arts, lost to convenience foods and busy schedules. It’s a shame as it isn’t particularly difficult or time consuming, is fun and it’s good to know what goes into your food,” comments Suzi.

“Alongside baking I also sew and

knit, Neil does sugarcraft amongst other crafty things so very quickly we began to link it all together and I’m very proud to say that Nice Buns, Nice Life was born offering classes in ‘Baking & Making’!”

The couple provide workshops for the young and the not so young and all those in between out of their home where they have a purpose built workshop, dubbed NiceBuns HQ.

To find out more you can follow Nice Buns, Nice Life on Facebook, www.facebook.com/NiceBunsNI to keep up to date with what’s coming up and have a read of their blog to see the daily goings on at Nice Buns HQ.

A Captivating Reid...THIS MOnTH MAGS COnnOLLy CATCHES UP WITH LOCAL, SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHOR, Rebecca Reid.

i’VE KNOWN Rebecca Reid for many years and back in the day, the pair of us wrote a column alternatively for the Bangor Spectator on lifestyle issues. Rebecca was only 16 at the time, but had a maturity and love of writing which culminated in a column that addressed issues affecting teenagers as well as fashion, beauty and film.

Now, thirteen years on, a husband and three beautiful girls later, Rebecca’s love and passion for writing is still as strong as ever and has led her to self-publish her first novel, “The Coop”, the first part of the Thickets Wood Trilogy.

Rebecca, when did you first begin to develop and write the Thickets Wood Trilogy? The seeds for the Trilogy were actually sewn during my creative writing module which was part of my English degree from Queen’s University. I’ve been writing stories and poems since the age of 14 and I’ve always enjoyed exploring that darker side of life, which is a surprise to people that know me. I’ve never been drawn to chick-lit novels, it’s psychological fiction that truly captures my imagination and this is the genre I now find myself in.

Briefly, what can readers expect from “The Coop”?“The Coop” is part one of the Thickets Wood Trilogy. It is a

dark and mysterious read about the destruction of innocence and readers will immediately notice that the chapter layout is different to your standard novel. A girl, apparently imprisoned in a room, is the thread of mystery running parallel to the tale of Thatchbury village. Readers will meet Howard and Lilly, who will take them on a journey through Thatchbury where Matthew, the child from the coop, shoots Jodie Tiding, and so unravels the history of his loveless raising, her innocence and the dramatic events leading them to disaster. It is not based on the realities of life, but rather on the exploration of the multilayered and complex architecture of the mind. The final chapter delivers a totally unexpected and shocking revelation. “The Coop” is not what it seems - things are never that simple.

What was the inspiration for the cover art?I have always worshipped Neil Shawcross’ paintings and I knew that if he agreed that he was the only one who could come up with the perfect cover - and he did. So, I baked him some brownies and called in to see him for a chat. This was a new venture for him too, but he agreed to read the manuscript and the cover art was actually his first draught - he just captured what I was hoping for straightaway.

14 interview

How long do readers have to wait on the next installment?Part two of the Trilogy is out in April. I’m trying to stagger each book by about six months.

Are you disciplined when it comes to setting aside time for writing?Yes, I have to be. With three young children, Molly (5), Mathilda 2 1/2) and Cherry (1), I have to be regimented with the time I set aside when they are at school or with their childminder. I have three mornings a week when I sit and write. I don’t like to be away from the book for too long, so I have to use the time I have wisely. People who know me will know when I have been writing because it takes me an hour or two to come back out of the place I’ve been in for the book, I get so wrapped up in the characters and what is going on. It’s a bit like meditating!

Why did you take the decision to self-publish?When I first started writing if you self-published your work, no matter

how good, would be discredited if and when you got a publisher, but this has now changed and all works, even self-published titles are accepted. Feedback I have had from publishers is that they love my work, but in the current climate they don’t want to take the risk on an unestablished author, so I decided to do it for myself and my e-book is available to download from Amazon. To be honest I didn’t approach publishers with “The Coop” and decided to just do it myself, but I may look to do so when the second book comes out in the Spring.

Has it been hard promoting the book?I’ve been very lucky that I have had a lot of support from the press throughout Ireland. Marie-Louise Muir from BBC Arts Extra loves the book and as a result has been extremely supportive as have others. Obviously because I have taken the decision to self-publish the promotion of the book has fallen on my shoulders and I found myself on Facebook and Twitter constantly when I launched “The Coop”, which is time-consuming, especially when you are a working mum, but all the of the hard work has been worth it.

Have you had a lot of support from your friends and family?Yes, my mum, dad and husband, Johnny are all on hand to help me with the children and act as a sounding board for the book. My sister, Tara Craig, a local journalist is also invaluable because once myself and my literary agent have edited, Tara makes sure the book has that last necessary edit before going on sale on Amazon.

So what does the future hold?Well, I’m currently putting the finishing touches to the second installment of the Thickets Wood Trilogy and hopefully everyone enjoys it as much as the first, and who knows - perhaps a publishing deal awaits in 2013!

rEViEW QUOTES...“Wonderfully captivating debut novel. Captures your attention entirely from the offset, with rich, vivid descriptions, fascinating characters and a gripping storyline. Throughout the storyline there are twists and turns, which prevent the reader from ever knowing as to what direction the story will take next. This does but one thing; leaves the reader hungry with the desire for more. It truly is a riveting and thought provoking read, I sincerely look forward to the sequel.” Matthew Lappin

“This first book from Rebecca Reid is wonderful. I read it in a day and could not put it down, the only problem now is waiting for the next installment in the trilogy! Buy it, read it, love it.” Gemma Watson

iT’S aLWayS iNTiMiDaTiNg when visiting a new city. I’ve worked in Belfast with PR and events management company, CMPR, for almost three years and also in New York a few times at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, but it wasn’t until recently that I decided to venture to the big smoke just across the water - London. I touched base with top model agency, Storm Models, and arranged an internship. With the flights booked, internship confirmed, and apartment sorted, there was no going back!

On arrival at Victoria Train Station in the centre of London, I was overwhelmed by the vast crowd of people wheeling suitcases but I finally made it to my apartment in the lovely area of Pimlico. Starting my big internship the next day, I decided it was time for lights out…at 8pm. Not so rock ‘n’ roll but I’m a great believer in working hard and being prepared so it paid off.

After a more than sufficient sleep, I joined the crowds on the streets of London and made my way to Chelsea, stopping at Starbucks on the way to pick up a Chai Tea Latte. Walking into the Storm office was very intimidating but I was soon put at ease after being introduced to all the lovely members of staff. The first day seemed like a dream, seeing all the models I’ve read about and seen in magazines.

During the couple of weeks I spent with Storm, I learnt so much

more about the modelling industry and how the bookings department functions on a day-to-day basis. There were many highlights to my trip, a couple of which included meeting the managing director Sarah Doukas and also meeting my favourite fashion model, Cara Delevingne, before the British Fashion Awards. Something bigger was to follow in the next few days though…

Whispers filled the office as everyone discussed that top supermodel Kate Moss would be visiting the office to sign copies of her latest book – I was ecstatic! I rushed straight out to the Bluebird Shop and bought two copies, one for myself and one for my boss, Cathy Martin. Kate was an absolute pleasure to meet, very accommodating with my signature requests as well as being down to earth and absolutely stunning – it was amazing to meet the woman I had read about and seen on the cover of so many magazines.

But all in a flash it came to an end. The time flew, the lessons were well and truly learnt and I picked up so many tips from my time working in London. Words can’t describe how fantastic it was but at the same time, I was glad to get back home to my work family at CMPR for a catch up with the team. Here’s to New York in February & Belfast FASHIONWEEK in March. Hopefully, 2013 will be as amazing as 2012 has been.

ThE 1950S KiCKED OFF with a feeling of hope and euphoria of post war optimism. Women had their men home and it was time to abandon utilitarian garments and embrace the desire to wear more luxurious, feminine attire. Symbolising this hope for prosperity, the new 50s style skirts were extravagant, requiring up to 18 metres of material. These changes in attitude found women’s fashion revert to a notion of romance and femininity – nipped in waists, full skirts, lace details and luxurious fabrics.

The influence of the 1950s aesthetic was evident on the S/S13 catwalks as a prevailing theme, with the ladylike silhouette a predominant shape. Temperley London showed figure-flattering powder blue full skirts and nipped waists with dainty styling of Sophia Loren shades and lace gloves. Whilst Holly Fulton’s collection brought 50’s Americana to the forefront, bubblegum sugary shades of prim waist-cinching prom dresses and fitted pencil skirts set the scene. Whether you opt for fit or flounce, feel-good 50s fashion has returned!

SO WE arE coming into 2013, time to start making all those resolutions. Buy gym membership, buy healthy food, take various vitamins and generally be a happier, skinnier, fitter more upbeat version of ourselves. I am exhausted already just thinking about it.I don’t know about you but as each year passes its gets even harder to find the motivation and determination to really get up off my

sofa and get going, especially when it is still absolutely freezing outside.

That is why here at the Ciara Daly Makeup Towers we have the heating on full blast and are getting ready for a series of workshops and courses tailored to suit everybody’s needs.

What better way to start the New Year than to update your make-up look and feel gorgeous, without a treadmill in sight. Each workshop we will demonstrate various different looks and keep you up-to-date on all new trends and techniques.

Better still why not make this year the year you give yourself a new career? With loads of different courses available, it is never too late and you are never too young or old to begin a career in make-up.

It’s something that many people go on to do starting off on a part time basis, at weekends etc. So if you really cannot face another year of sitting at that desk or answering the phone then here is a perfect opportunity to get proactive about your own destiny and ultimately happiness.

From photo shoots, bridal make-up, formals and graduations it really is an exciting and dynamic industry to be in. Every week is different and it gives you the opportunity to be creative and to meet interesting passionate people from all walks of life.Photography: Alan Wells

WhaT BETTEr Way to bring in the New Year – or indeed to ring out the old - than with a spa treatment? As a mummy, this month I booked myself in for a treatment specifically designed for all us hard-working mums out there - the New Mum Tonifying and Firming Treatment. Although it’s a billed as a post-pregnancy wrap, I thought ten months on from having my own baby it wouldn’t go amiss. Like most mums there’s not much time to think about wraps or treatments before kids are a year old!

As well as an amazing array of massages and other beauty treatments, Bellaire offers a special maternity range of body wrap treatments formulated for either pregnant or post-pregnant ladies. These body wrap treatments

use the fantastic Italian range “Comfort Zone” which is sold in salon. The Post-Pregnancy Wrap that I had stimulates collagen and elastin in the skin and targets areas of cellulite whilst tightening areas of the skin that have been affected by pregnancy.

The first phase of the treatment was a full-body exfoliation (the perfect way to scrub away all those winter cobwebs!). My therapist Georgia applied the AHA Exfoliator directly to my skin from top-to-toe. It remains on the skin for the entire treatment to work its magic to its entirety and is menthol infused so it really brought all my senses alive.

Following this, the wrap was applied directly on top of the exfoliator. The wrap (which consists of a plastic material) is

Page 43: Ulster Life Jan 2013

41beauty

only applied to the stomach and upper thighs as these are the areas most mums have problems with.

Within a few minutes I felt both hot and cold sensations as the product penetrated deep into the skin’s layers, this continued for the full 20-minute treatment time. My therapist left the room so I could relax in the candle-light - a perfect moment of tranquillity (which is a rare occurrence for me as a full-time working mum!). The relaxation continued with a full head and scalp massage as well as a hand and arm massage. Between the candle-lit room, music and lovely products I was a million miles away from my busy life!

The wrap was removed using hot towels but the salon also offers a showering option depending on

client preference. The treatment is finished with a coating of Comfort-Zone Firming Moisturiser. The recommended follow-up for this treatment is to under-go a weekly treatment over a period of one month. I know I won’t get time to do this but I’d love to know just how fantastic I’d feel if I did that because just one treatment left me feeling wonderful!

I left the salon with a post-treatment glow, feeling refreshed, revitalised and ready to get back to the juggle of daily life.

Q: How do I achieve that “polished” look that will withstand our ever changing weather? I want a look that I can put together with ease, but one that doesn’t look thrown together.

Don’t you just hate it when you spend hours pampering your hair only to brave the elements, arriving at work with a hair style that is anything but on-trend? The simple ponytail that has been gracing the catwalks and magazines lately is the perfect combination between chic and easy. It will withstand almost everything Mother Nature throws at you and still look preened and stylish. I would suggest using JOICO’s “Care Trio” - Cleanse, Condition & Renovate; from the Structure Styling range. To create the look, use the three products in unison; thoroughly shampoo your hair with the cleanser, rinse fully and then apply the conditioner and rinse again. When your hair is still wet; apply the Renovate product.

After completing this routine, your hair will be smooth and knot free - the perfect condition to create a polished, sleek look with ease. When your chic ponytail is completed, spritz your hair with JOICO’s “Finish” instant hold working spray. This spray is fast drying and gives an instant workable hold to your finished look – banishing bad hair days for good!

Q: I have long hair which is great for a quick up-do, but due to my incessant backcombing, it’s ended up a matted mess. I need some hair TLC and fast - HELP!

Backcombing is such an effective trick for quick fix volume, but even those blessed with thick luscious locks will suffer the after effects. I would recommend you try the JOICO “Revitaluxe” product from the K-Pack range. Apply the rich and indulgent mask liberally on your hair before bed, tie your hair up in a bun and go to sleep

– simple as that! The ingredients within this product will work to really strengthen and repair the hair follicles and create a smoother finish with no tugs or knots. Wash your hair in the morning as usual and you will see immediate results. If you are looking for a quick fix before a night out “Revitaluxe” will also work wonders. Use it directly after cleansing and conditioning and leave on for seven to ten minutes. As a result, your hair will be soft, easy to work with and irresistibly touchable. I love using this product as an intense treatment for clients after the party period as it works amazingly to strengthen and repair the hair, restoring much needed moisture.

Q: I have thick, unruly hair, how can I re-create the Duchess of Cambridge’s amazing style? I love her voluptuous, luscious hair and retro sweeping fringe. I love Kate’s modern twist on a classic style. It’s not hard to re-create the sweeping fringe and polished style. Like any routine, you have a few steps to go through before you can achieve the finished product. I would suggest you use JOICO Foundation, Hair Prep and Primer; applying to your damp hair after you have washed and conditioned it. The foundation will detangle your hair, giving it moisture and shine without weighing it down. Next, use a large round brush and blow dry your hair from root to tip - this creates Kate’s enviable volume! Once your hair is dry and has that extra bounce, brush your fringe to the side and apply a few drops of JOICO K-Pak Protect and Shine Serum on your hair, concentrating on your fringe. This weightless shine serum protects, nourishes and polishes, giving your hair a glossy, defined finish. It also adds shine, holding your hair in place and ultimately taming those unruly locks. After this routine, your hair will be fit to rival any Royal!

have you sTarTed To make your new year resoluTions already? well, before you do,

make sure ThaT 2013 is The year for realisTiC Change and as Claire Wilson advises make

Changes ThaT you’ll sTiCk To long afTer The ChrisTmas deCoraTions are Taken down!

it’s Mid deCeMber, and for a change, I’m organised for Christmas. Presents are purchased, gift wrap (complete with bows) has been selected and I even know what I’m wearing on Christmas Day.

I’m now waiting patiently, and very excitedly, for Christmas Eve when I can sit by the fire, mulled wine in hand, and wrap my perfectly selected gifts – there’s nothing quite like finding the perfect present for a loved one.

But before my preparation for the festive season is fully complete I’ve got one more task at hand – to find the perfect party dress. I’ve been in and out of changing rooms for the past month, trawling the internet, and pounding the streets of Belfast to find something fabulous to don over Christmas.

Many times I’ve tried on what at first seemed to be “the one”. Each time, I’ve been let down by my bingo wings, the winter bloat, the list continues.

We’ve all been there haven’t we? There’s always some part of ourselves we want to change. I think that is all part of being a woman, and a man of course (apparently, the number of “moob jobs” has doubled this year!!).

So last Sunday, right there in the changing room of River Island,

Time for a Change

Page 62: Ulster Life Jan 2013

60 resolutions

whilst wearing the most beautiful black drape studded shoulder dress, I vowed that this New Year, I’m going to get arms of steel, and vanquish those bingo wings permanently, and I did I mention – get abs like Jessica Ennis.

So there it is, that’s my New Year’s Resolution – I’m going to shape up. At a perfect size 10, it’s not my size I’m changing; I simply want to tone up – not completely unrealistic is it? And I think that’s probably the key to success.

Year after year how many of us, after over indulging on mince pies and warm apple cider, vow to drop a dress size by the end of January? Or put out the cigarette on New Year’s Eve and promise never to smoke again.

For my best friend, her New Year’s resolution last year was to go to the gym after work every day of the week, only to then find her nestled on the couch with a cuppa and a biscuit every night instead.

That’s the problem with New Year’s resolutions – all too often we make unrealistic promises that we simply can’t keep. Instead, this year let’s resolve to make small, simple changes that can make all the difference.

This year, resolve to make a resolution you can keep – don’t swear to completely abandon smoking, or vow to become teetotal, because let’s be honest after a hard week at the office a chilled glass of vino is simply a necessity. Simply cut down – everything in moderation as my glorious mother often says.

If it’s a resolution to achieve a body like Beyoncé, don’t completely ruin your post-Christmas budget by making a quick dash to join the gym – instead, resist the January chill, refuse to take the bus and walk instead.

And of course, we all know how it feels when the January statement comes flooding through the post, or in the era of online banking, a quick click on your iPhone can unleash the terror of just how poor your post-

festivities bank balance is looking?Don’t declare that you will never

spend another penny again, that you are avoiding Victoria Square at all costs, instead simply promise yourself that you will reduce your spending. Instead of that weekly purchase from Zara, treat yourself at the end of a hard month. And for goodness sake – don’t miss out on the January sales.

Whatever your New Year’s Resolution is, make it a good one. But if you need help? Or just want a good read, have a look on our website, I’ll be uploading some tips on how to keep those promises as we enter 2013, and I’ll also be seeing what resolutions you lot are making this year!

Until then, have a sparkling festive season and a great New Year!

set rigHt on tHe boArder with Italy, Hochgurgl is an exclusive Austrian resort on top of the Ötztal Alps. It seemed an obvious choice for getting the most out of all aspects of a ski holiday. As a relative novice, I was relieved to find plenty of beginner friendly slopes, and because of Hochgurgl’s remarkably high altitude you can almost be guaranteed fresh snow, but in the rare event that this is not the case, the resort is well equipped with artificial snow. The scenery is spectacular, with views right down the valley and over the neighbouring resort of Obergurgl. There is also a lift which connects the two resorts with ski passes covering both areas, so the adventurous will never get bored. By making your way to the

highest of the run you will find the highlight of resort, the Top Mountain Star a stunning building teetering at the top of the mountain boasting panoramic views over Austria and sitting on the Italian boarder, it also overlooks the Italian Dolomites. On a clear day mountain tops can be seen for miles. It is worth taking a trip just to see the building itself, a true mark of architectural genius where you can rest with a drink, even if like me, you have to catch the lift back down again!

For a break from skiing, tobogganing is unmissable. Twice a week the slopes come to life after dark with the floodlit toboggan run. This is something I had never before experienced and felt like a scene from Mario

Karts, great fun for all ages, and luckily requiring very little skill.

With only six hotels in Hochgurgl it would seem like there is not a lot of choice. But with such a high standard throughout it makes the decision a little easier. We chose Hotel Riml, the highest in the resort. We were greeted with a warm Austrian welcome and even though we had missed dinner we had been kept platters before retiring to our rooms. Our room was spacious with a separate sitting area and impressive bathroom complete with large jacuzzi style bath, perfect for easing the muscles when you come off the slopes! The best bit of the room had to be the balcony with a breathtaking view down the mountain.

The hotel has its own ski hire centre and beautiful shop selling all the best gear and perfect for souvenirs. Throughout the hotel there is a traditional but luxurious feel, with constant reminders that you are in Austria, from local arts and crafts on display for sale, to the waiters serving dinner in traditional Laderhosen, quite an experience! The food itself is classic Austrian à la carte with some dishes you will recognise, and some you won’t, but all of which are beautifully presented, explained and served with compementing wine.

I have to admit, the perfect skiing holiday for me involves just as much relaxation as it does the great outdoors, and Hotel Riml is definitely the right place to be. The wellness area is a massive 1000m2 with a state-of-the-art stainless steel indoor pool and

relaxation area above, all with more beautiful views overlooking the mountains. In true Austrian style, the spa area is a no swimwear zone - so it’s not for the faint hearted! There is also a full package of treatments from massage to make-up application before dinner.

What’s more if your sporting prowess spans beyond the slopes, you will never get bored, as the hotel boasts Europe’s largest indoor golfing simulator and putting green. Test your skills playing a full 18 holes at any of the world’s greatest courses and you can even get one-to-one tuition. And what round of golf would be complete without finishing off in the 19th hole? Well of course, the hotel has it covered with their Putt-in-bar, an informal sports bar for warming coffee and lively aprés ski.

After a week in Hochgurgl you will be throughly relaxed and looked after, but will have done enough outdoor activity not to feel guilty! Sounds like the perfect break for me!

Think of this from a fashion perspective with the LBD or classic Chanel pieces, think of Claridges, Even Sir Alex Ferguson. The things we tamper with least seem to be the most successful and this transfers to the world of motoring. The Mini, The Beetle, and the classic lines of the Porsche 911. You could argue that the latest incarnations are loaded with technology, bigger, wider, faster and ultimately safer but this slow process of development has been made over decades with each new model seeing tweaks that are simply not noticeable to the average man I the street. The end result is a vehicle that hasn’t drifted from its core values and means that after 40 years of production it has a following from 16 year olds to 70

Page 70: Ulster Life Jan 2013

68 motoring

year olds which is why we see so many of these vehicles on the road.

This brings me to our car this month. The all New Range Rover Vogue SE. From launch back in 1970 this is a car, Jeep, Chelsea Tractor, delete as appropriate that falls into the instantly recognisable category. Whether the car is a 1970’s Classic or a new 2013 model you’ll know exactly what it is from any angle. Try playing that game in 40 years time with the range of Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota variants.

This car oozes luxury and sitting inside the cabin you are surrounded by a smothering of wood and leather that you’d find offensive in any other car, however, the Range Rover would feel cheap if finished in anything less. The driving position is as you’d expect, apart from being one of the most comfortable ergonomic places to sit while moving forward

in extreme comfort you do feel safe. The car might be a lot lighter than its predecessor but you still feel planted to the ground and well protected. Being lighter the fuel economy is up significantly which is good news for those who’ll only ever use the car in slow moving city traffic. Outside of the city and in particular going off road, the car is capable. However, we never tested it in those conditions so won’t talk about it, suffice to say not too many will enjoy this car off road and those that do will probably have got there in error.

This might be a large 4x4 traditional looking jeep but if anything it’s a luxurious, executive little bit of Claridges on wheels that will sell in huge numbers despite the price tag and a sticky economy. Buyers with money to spend will always want the next best thing, but don’t tinker with it too much!

The Enchanted Masked Ball for NSPCC at the CullodenPhotograPhy: Phil Smyth

nortHern irelAnd’s glitterati tipped up to the Culloden on Saturday night looking enchanting in their ball gowns and masks to support the NSPCC Changing Childhoods Appeal NI. Art Consultant Carrie Neely, NSPCC Appeal Board member and Co-Ball organiser (with Emma Sheppard) said “What a fantastic evening we all had! Over 90 performers kept our guests entertained and everyone made such a fantastic effort with the masked theme. I asked everyone to take their masks off during my speech to support our NSPCC who help local neglected

children take off the masks that cover up what is really happening to them at home. The aim of the evening was not only to have lots of fun, but to raise awareness and money for a very important local charity, and I’m happy to say we achieved both.”The Ball was hosted by Emma-Louise Johnston, and prizes up for grabs included a Canadian Ice Diamond and Tag Heuer Watch from Goldmiths, a signed Darren Clarke shirt, and a Sean Kelly Signature Bike from Chain Reaction, and was supported by House of Fraser, Victoria Square and Coca-Cola.

Bubba’s Here!PhotograPhy: Kirth Ferris

AMeriCAn bbQ Joint, Bubbacue, launched at the end of November, to bring the foodies of Belfast a taste of slow-cooking from the deep South. The pop-up eatery, open for three months only, is tucked away on Callender Street in the heart of Belfast’s City Centre. Bubba’s has a laid back, rough and ready feel where emphasis is placed on the long, slow smoking of pork, ribs, brisket and wings coupled

with hearty American sides and desserts. Bubbacue has embraced the art of this relaxed American tradition, with chefs hand smoking brisket and pork for over 15 hours to achieve mouth-wateringly tender results. Sides such as slaw, mac and cheese, fries and homemade potato chips have all been developed to be the ultimate in comfort food on a dreary winter’s day.

A Beautiful DayPhotograPhy: Richard Watson

sonyA MCspArron and Neil Lawrence met on a dance floor while on night out in Belfast about 13 years ago! Neil later popped the question during a holiday to Portugal and planning began for their ceremony and reception which took place at Larchfield Estate, Lisburn. Sonya wore an Ian Stuart taupe gown made of silk dupion and tulle, and the bridesmaids wore full length rich aubergine maxi dresses, accessorized with an

individual aurora borealis vintage brooch which Sonya sourced and handpicked for them. J Bird Bakery created the mini cupcakes which where delicious and looked stunning on the cake tree within the barn and in lieu of favours guest were provided with the couple’s own special signature cocktails, “Raspberry Fizz” and “Rum and Elderfower Collins”. The couple went on to honeymoon at Bangkok and Ko Samui, Thailand.

90 the final word

Who are you closest to?I am close to many people - I am close to Bradley, to Ayria, to Paddy (McGurgan)….

What is your earliest memory? It’s quite a sad memory actually, I remember watching Watership Down at my parents’ house and crying when the rabbits were killed! It was traumatising, I was so upset. What is your biggest fear?My biggest fear is fear itself. I’m also afraid of failing. I tend not to focus too much on anything that makes me feel afraid. I try to have a positive outlook.

Relaxation is… going to the QFT after having a yum yum bowl in Common Ground coffee shop - watching a really great movie. I also love the Lake District. It’s my favourite place and I go every year and take my dogs. I didn’t get to go this year though as I was too busy.

What are you best at? Photography of course! What do you value in a partner?Consideration and patience. I can be difficult, my life is difficult - I work so hard and give so much to my job because it’s my passion. It takes a lot of patience to put up with my work demands. What will shock us? I’m afraid I’m not very shocking! Although, a lot of people are surprised when I tell them I love Formula One racing! I really like fast cars.

When did you last feel really happy?Earlier today when I had the most amazing fish and chips ever after working on a fashion shoot on location. They were so good!

Up Close & Personal

What is your biggest regret? Not travelling enough and seeing the world. I always wanted to go to New York and Paris and I actually had tickets to Paris booked and paid for when I was 21 as I was going to work there for the summer but my parents wouldn’t let me go! They were very protective.

What would you change about your life?I’d love more time to be able to chill out but at the same time I love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for anything! So I suppose nothing really!
