1. INCH LOSS THERAPY: My first treatment this month was at Bellaze – a new inch loss clinic in Donegall Street in Belfast. The inch loss comes from a combination of cold laser beams which attack and shrink fat cells followed by 20 minute muscle contraction therapy – which is, if you’re having it on your tummy like I did, the equivalent of 4000 crunches as you lie there catching up on messages or social media, or even watching some TV in the comfortable salon environment. Bliss! Louise at the clinic is so friendly

Let’s just start this month’s ‘Bikini Body’ column by saying I’m no Elle McPherson. I don’t claim to have the ultimate bikini body, but I have tried a few products and treatments recently which can help towards making your body bikini ready, and with that in mind, here are my Top Five Bikini Body tips.

and welcoming, explaining clearly what is involved but also leaving you in private while the treatment works away on your chubby bits. Most people target their abdomens like I did, but you can also target thighs, bums and love handles too. As well as muscle toning, calorie burning and fat breakdown, other added benefits include increased blood and lymphatic drainage and increased physical energy. Lots of Belfast girls are addicted now – former Miss Ireland Rebecca Maguire, stylist Rebecca McKinney, model Jayne Higgins and fitness blogger

and Peanut Butter Girl Tiffany Brien are all regular users

2. JUICE: Let’s face it, it’s what you put in your mouth that makes the most impact on your body shape, so you may as well make it healthy and nutritious. I am now a huge fan of juicing and love a wee delivery to the office from Skinny Malinky’s – and recently I’ve also tried Omagh based Ju-Tox after winning a Facebook competition. I have to admit I miss my solids too much to do the full three day juice-only detox, so I usually drink the juices for breakfast,

lunch and snacks and then have a protein meal (sea bass with stir fried greens is a favourite) after work. Juicing is a fabulous way to shift excess weight quickly, especially weight which is being carried because of water retention or a bout of over indulgence. In fact, speaking of over-indulgence, it’s a great remedy for holiday hangovers too, plus, it’s also amazing for skin and I know my skin is always glowing if I do three days’ juicing in any given week.

3. PERSONAL TRAINER: I don’t have a personal trainer

at the moment. In fact I don’t even have enough time to fit in the gym, being a mummy and running a business to be honest, but exercise is one element which will make a difference in how your body looks – both in your clothes or in a bikini. I’ve resolved to start a new gym and PT this summer because I had one last year for a year and just once a week with him made all the difference in terms of motivation, correct exercise for my goals and also just for the company, because it’s great to work out with someone,

especially someone who pushes you just that little bit harder.

4. SHINE: The best products I’ve come across for ultimate bikini body lustre include the fabulous Michael Kors Dry Oil which adds amazing shimmer to your skin and which is now available at House of Fraser. Bobbi Brown Beach Oil is also fab for this. If your budget’s a bit lower try the Sublime Dry Oil by He-Shi, or if you happen to be holidaying in France, make like the Mahiki girls from Tahiti and buy an original Monoi oil, which is made from the Tiare flower and smells divine as well as being 100% natural. (PS the Tahitians have been putting this in their hair for centuries, well before Moroccan Oil was on the market).

5. TREATMENTS: There are many treatments to get before baring your body on the beach, but the essentials for me are – a good wax (try Luxe Day Spa’s amazing intimate waxing), a great pre-tan body scrub and exfoliation (The Merchant Spa or Skin Medi Spa both do good ones) and a great mani-pedi (try Lekker in Holywood). Hair should be in tip top condition too, so book a conditioning treatment both before and after the holiday to keep hair looking swish. Finally, for fluttering those lashes at any holiday romance types, invest in a great set of 3D lash extensions at Bellaire which will last through beach and pool and save on melting mascara moments!

Be prepared to get at least your 5-a-day, as something extra sweet is on the menu this season. Bold and brave fruit prints are covering clothes this summer, from tropical pineapples and watermelons to homegrown strawberries and apples. Citrus are celebrated as pops of neon oranges and lemons offer a zesty addition.

This fruity fix is most definitely

A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season.

a style full of fun. Whether you choose a pair of statement citrus print trousers or add retro style novelty pineapple sunglasses, this trend will enhance your wardrobe and cleanse your palette all summer long!

Emoda’s SS’14 lemon prints at Tokyo Fashion Week put us in the mood to lounge in the sun with a glass of cool lemonade! This dainty print looked super-cute on sundresses and micro shorts. Teamed with matching headscarves, cat’s eye sunglasses and strings of pearls, it presented the ultimate nod to retro classics – successfully nailing two seasonal trends in one.

“Bananas is my business” was the headline for Krizia Robustella’s SS’14 show. Inspired by Brazilian star Carmen Miranda, the collection was a riot of colour and all things tropical. The designer packed a generous fruit punch with kitsch oversized banana and strawberry earrings, paired with clashing printed biker jackets and gingham swimwear.

Are you feeling fruity this summer? The high street certainly is! Choose from an array of delights inspired by the SS’14 catwalks – whether you go bright or bold, statement or subtle, pick your fruit wisely and enjoy every juicy bite.

ULHow did you start Kelly Simpkin London? I always loved fashion and studied Art & Design at college. I have been a stylist at Nicky Clarke’s exclusive Mayfair salon for years and having built up a strong reputation as a top creative, I made the break into fashion design for Spring Summer 14, with the launch of my self-titled womenswear collection, Kelly Simpkin London. Tell us about your SS14 collection? Each collection has strong elements of timeless luxury and my SS14 collection encompasses exquisitely crafted womenswear and accessories using only the finest fabrics including sumptuous suede, leather and sheepskin. My designs are all tailor-made investment pieces that can be worn and treasured forever. Do you have a favourite piece? That’s a difficult one but would have to say my signature Kelly Simpkin London “Desert” dress as it is a best seller, flattering on all figures and available in numerous luxe colourways. Where do you get inspiration? There isn’t one particular place. It can be on holiday or whilst I am travelling for work. Inspiration can come at any one time. Do you get any advice from Nicky? Nicky’s natural entrepreneurial flair definitely rubs off and

Kelly Simpkin, knows good style. Here she tells Ulster Life all about her tailor-made womenswear collection….

his guidance and advice from a creative perspective is truly invaluable. Describe your personal style I don’t like to look like everyone else. I like to stand out, but in a subtle way, by choosing colours or styles that are not what everyone is wearing. I reference the past in my own style too. One of my favourite looks for myself is to wear a shirt, usually silk, tied at the front with high waisted shorts or trousers. Very 1940’s. I try to always make an effort. If I look good, I feel good! What’s your top style tip for spring / summer? Try new things, be different and wear something that you wouldn’t usually. Try wearing a scarf. You can wear scarves in so many ways; as a headscarf, neatly around your neck, on your wrist or even your ankle. Does this scenario sound familiar? You’re running late to work, so you pick

up a large latte and a bagel. Around mid-morning you feel a craving for ‘elevenses’ so grab a coffee and a biscuit. For lunch it’s a large sandwich and soft drink. Around about 3pm you’re feeling tired and need a pick-me-up, so it’s a large coffee to see

you through until home time. Your blood sugar levels have been

rising too high and then falling too low all day. These levels have been out of balance all day, in a constant cycle of spiking and crashing, more than likely leaving you feeling lethargic with little sustained energy. Not only that, you are struggling to keep weight off.

So, why are blood sugar levels

so important to successful weight loss? Your body strives for balance and if it cannot achieve this balance, it creates compromise. Failure to keep your blood sugar levels in balance leads your body to store fat. When you eat carbohydrates your body turns this into glucose and it travels through the bloodstream to your cells where it will be used for energy. Your very own rocket

PETER BAIRDA qualified Nutritional Consultant, Peter is a Dr. Eric Serrano official European Practioner. He has worked as a professional consultant under Matt Lovell, official Nutritionist to the UK Olympic 2012 team. As well as with other professional athletes including the English National rugby team, Gwent Newport Dragons Magners Premier League and Co. Derry GAA.

Reader: What is the key to balancing your blood sugar levels through diet?Peter: The key is keeping anything high in sugar to a minimum in your diet. They are highly refined and processed, thus losing most of the nutritional value and fibre. Thanks to processing and additives, ‘bad carbs’ are temptingly tasty. However, they are likely to create a dramatic surge in insulin levels, which results in overworking your pancreas, storage of fats, diabetes, heart disease, overweight and even obesity problems.

Reader: What is the relation between glycemic index (GI) and blood sugar levels? Peter: All carbohydrates have a glycemic value. Put simply high glycemic foods release sugars into

your system very fast, creating body fat storage. Low glycemic foods slowly release sugars into our bloodstream, allowing our bodies to cope better at reducing sugar/insulin spikes. Meats and fats don’t have a GI because they do not contain carbohydrate.

Reader: Is blood sugar affected by all forms of sugar - manmade and naturally occurring sugars? Peter: Yes. Tropical fruits like melons and pineapples contain high amounts of sugars. Telling someone to stop eating fruit goes against everything we have been taught though and sounds weird. But it is not about not eating them, but more balancing them so we aren’t replacing chocolate snacks with fruits, which have as much sugars as the chocolate/snack!

Reader: How can diabetes and blood sugar levels be safely reduced through diet?Peter: Understanding that high sugar/fast release foods use up all our own natural insulin to remove sugar spikes, which then causes us to use up all our own natural stores. It is then you have to use medicinal insulin via administration (type 1 or type 2 diabetics) to combat the sugary foods we then eat. Not abusing high sugar treats is a sure way to allow our insulin stores to refill, preventing diabetes and preventing storage of body fat.

fuel supply! All good. Problems start, however, when your blood sugar levels go too high. The pancreas produces a hormone called insulin, whose job is to move glucose out of the blood. The more glucose in your blood, the more insulin you produce to shift it along. If your body cannot use the glucose for energy, it will be stored as fat. Furthermore, too much insulin hinders the body’s ability to breakdown fat that has already been stored. And let’s not forget the risk of diabetes and heart disease. So now is the time to consider the effect of your diet on your blood sugar levels…

What to Watch For:• Simple carbohydrates: most likely to cause an insulin surge. They include the various forms of sugar, such as sucrose (table sugar), fructose (fruit sugar), lactose (dairy sugar) and glucose (blood sugar). Watch for the “ose” ending.• Hidden sugar in processed foods: such as bread, ketchup, salad dressing, cereals and soups.• Sugar in beverages: fizzy drinks, juices and flavoured coffees.• Fat-free products: sugar is often used to replace the flavour that is lost when the fat is removed. • No added sugar: This doesn’t mean that the product doesn’t naturally contain a lot of sugar. 100% fruit products often contain concentrated fruit juice, still another form of fructose or sugar.

Again this month, I have asked readers what blood sugar related questions they’d most like to put to our Body Lab expert - a professional, certified Nutritionist, Peter Baird of NI Supplements.

Having been recently asked to give up food for 3 days and take the Ju-Tox diet as a complete replacement for all meals and snacks, I have to say I was pretty certain I’d be eating solids that very night and laughing at the thought. Racing fans were chomping at the bit for the start of the Down Royal Summer season, which was launched at a celebration for horseracing devotees from across Northern Ireland.

Now in its sixth year, the Publicity Association for Northern Ireland (PANI)’s Education Programme, which supports future creatives and marketers within the advertising and publicity industry, celebrated another successful student-industry collaboration this month in its search for live campaign ideas for leading charity Age NI. Six advertising agencies from PANI including Ardmore, ASG,

AV Browne, Mammoth, RLA and Walkers teamed up with students from the University of Ulster’s Communications Advertising and Marketing (CAM) course and the Graphic Design & Illustration course to create a commercial pitch to increase awareness of Age NI and specifically, to increase calls to the charity’s helpline number.

This year’s winning team was a group of students including Lucia

Cerda, Rebecca Russell, Elliot Lyness and Marleta Bailie, who were mentored by agency RLA, and who will see their ‘Age is Just a Number’ campaign come to life on Clear Channel 48 sheet billboards around Belfast at the end of August.

Siobhan Casey, Marketing Director at Age NI, said: “We were delighted with the standard of work produced by the students and how insightful their research was into issues affecting people in later life. It was great to see the relationships they developed with clients when they visited one of our Age NI day centres. It was very clear that they had developed a deep understanding of the needs of older people and the role of Age NI before producing the final work. We’re also very grateful to the agencies for their time in mentoring the students. And of course to Clear Channel and other media owners, who supply media space free of charge to support this programme – and our campaign.”

Chair of PANI Cathy Martin, who judged the entries with Siobhan, added: “I loved the selection of straplines, photography and deep conceptual links as well as the quirky below-the-line advertising and marketing ideas that the teams came up with. It was a challenging brief for students, however I was really pleased to see that the teams went well beyond their academic capabilities to show some genuine commercial and creative flair which touched exactly upon the brief. I’m looking forward to seeing the winning campaign going live
