a) Cuando el río suena, agua lleva. If the river sounds, it carries water | This idiom explains that a part of each rumor could be true so it's important to keep listening. In UK it’s better known as "THERE IS NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE", but it means the same. b) Agua corriente no mata a la gente. Flowing water doesn't kill people. It has two meanings: if you're lost in the forest, stegnant water is not recommended for drink - flowing water isn't going to injure you. It also makes reference to the disadvantages of a sedentary lifestyle. c) Agua de mayo, pan para todo el año. Water in May, bread for all the year. It makes reference to the convenience of precipitations in May, so fields and crops get significantly benefited. It’s used to express that something is or was useful. Example: I need that job as water in May. In UK it’s known as "RAIN IN MAY MAKES THE WAY" d) Agua estancada, agua envenenada. Stegnant water, poisoned water. It's makes reference to the same things the 2nd idiom talks about. It’s translated as "STANDING POOLS GATHER FILTH". e) Agua fría y pan caliente mata la gente. Cold water and hot bread kill people. Informs about the disadvantages of two aliments, water and bread, that consumed with the wrong temperature are harmful for our bodie, althought they're very tasty. This can be applied to the rest of foods. It’s also known as “Comida

fría y bebida caliente, no hacen buen vientre”; “Agua fría y pan caliente, They do not do a good belly”. f) Al enemigo ni agua. To the enemy, not even water. Suggest not to be benevolent with people that is adverse to us. In English it’s usually translated as "DON'T EVEN GIVE WATER TO AN ENEMY". g) El arroz, el pez y el pepino, nacen en agua y mueren en vino. Rice, fish and cucumber are born in water and die in wine. Makes reference to the way these aliments are consumed in our culture. They’re born in water but a lot of times they’re eaten combined with wine. h) Nunca digas 'De esta agua no beberé'. Never say,”I'll never drink of this water”, no matter how dirty it is. It suggests not to say we will do nothing or that something won’t happen to us, as much as we do not want, because there’s always a small chance of that to happen. i) Ni firmes carta que no leas ni bebas agua que no veas. Literally “Neither sing letters that you do not read do not drink water that you do not see”. This idiom recommends to be prudent under any concept, specially before signing documents or drinking unknown liquids. It was created in an epoch where people had to take care about the water they were drinking, because it couldn’t be potable. j) Si agua sola es tu bebida, será más larga tu vida. If water is your drink, your life will be longer. This idiom alludes to the virtues of water against wine. Wine is a very typical drink here, but we’ll know that alcohol is not friendly to our bodies.
