Introduction

2

Ultran is a team of engineers, scientists, and skilledtechnicians that works closely with our clients.Together we are dedicated to providing the highestquality products and solutions. Ultran accomplishesthis by focusing on the heart of ultrasound: thetransducer.

Long ago we realized that for ultrasound to rivalother wave-based methods, we had to first developthe field. These goals are possible only throughtransducers with the right acoustics that performunder given conditions of testing.

Forty years of non-stop R&D in transducers andapplications allows us to share Ultran’s milestoneswith you.

1977 Unipolar λ-series transducers for extremely high resolution and spectroscopy.

1978 Dual damping mechanism for high signal-to-noise ratios.

1979Optimum development of broad-band (W-series), medium band, and narrow-band (k-series) transducers from 500 kHz to 25 MHz (currently offered up to 10 MHz).

1980 Very High Frequency transducers from 30 MHz to 200 MHz (currently discontinued).

1980 0◦ shear wave propagation transducers from 200 kHz to 20 MHz.

Transducer ConstructionCraftsmanship

Ultran has strict in-house quality control standards which result in high performancetransducers for non-destructive testing and medical therapy applications. Each transducerfeatures careful alignment of acoustic and geometric axes and is encased in its ownoptimally shaped and sized housing with specially designed acoustically passive materials.Combined with our unique transducer-making technology, these features produce anoptimum response from all our acoustic series.

Elements of a Piezoelectric Transducer

A transducer can be as simple as apiezoelectric disc with leads attached toboth faces.

Or, it can be a complex device intendedto evaluate a number of materials andinterfaces.

In conjunction with the testingenvironment and a material’s physicalcondition, a transducer device must becharacterized by proper acoustics andmechanical construction. Therefore, thedesign of a modern transducer requiresa knowledge of materials and theassociated physics.

Ultran’s years of experience have led tothe evolution of an array of transducerdesigns suitable for a vast number ofmaterials and test conditions.

Transducer CharacterizationAcoustic Parameters of a Transducer

Our transducers are measured and characterized by a number of key parameters whichare listed in the table below.

Nominal FrequencyThis is the target nominal frequency of the transducer as identified by the model number.

Peak FrequencyThis is the highest frequency response measured from the frequency spectrum.

Bandwidth Center Frequency (BCF)

This is the average of the lowest and highest points at a -6dB level of the frequency spectrum.

Bandwidth (BW)This is the difference between the highest and lowest frequencies at a -6dB level of the frequency spectrum, also identified as the % of BCF or of PF.

Test Setup for Data A report

The schematic (bottom left)depicts the water immersionexample for characterizationof an acoustic transducer. Atransducer is characterizedby using hard, soft, orgaseous reference mediadepending upon its designand intended application.

The oscilloscope trace (topleft) includes the timedomain response (top - blue)and frequency spectrum(below – red).

Sample Data for Focused Immersion Transducer

The profile images to the right werecaptured for a focused immersiontransducer to measure the focalparameters of this unit. The image to theright is a graphical representation of the X-Y beam profile while the image to thebottom represents the X-Z beam profile –measuring the focal depth. Numerical datais converted to acoustic pressure orintensity using a calibrated system.

Transducer CharacterizationSpatial and Acoustic Pressure/Intensity Measurements for Select Transducers

For specialized transducers or upon customer request, Ultran may perform spatial beamprofile measurements using Ultran’s U710x Ultrasonic Analysis System. Measurementsare performed using an immersible calibrated hydrophone for immersion transducers.

Transducer CustomizationsCertain customizations may be requested including connector type, housing material, dimensions, and use characteristics. Ultran will consider non-standard requests on a case-by-case basis.

Connector Types

The standard provided connector may be replaced with an alternative type (i.e. BNCreplaced with SMB). Please inform us if a different connector is preferred and we will doour best to accommodate.

Transducer Housing and Construction Materials

In some cases, a desired housing material may be used in place of the standard offering, such as stainless steel replaced with PEEK for immersion transducers. Other specialtydesign considerations may be incorporated, such as construction with materials intendedfor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatibility.

AccessoriesTo accompany our transducer products, Ultran offers a variety of accessories for use withours or 3rd-party instrumentation and for increased performance.

Matching Inductance Networks (MID)

External device for electrical matching between transducers and common 3rd partyelectronics to further improve performance. Generally intended for use with non-contactreceiving or pulse-echo transducers and offered at all standard NCU frequencies from 30kHz to 5 MHz.

Polystyrene Delay Tips

Delay lines for use with WRD, KRD, and SRD transducers. Provided at diameterscorresponding to standard transducer sizes and at various lengths. Custom lengths alsoavailable upon request.

Cables

Cables can be produced at a variety of sizes and with numerous connector types, includingBNC, UHF, Microdot, SMA, SMB, and LIMO.
