GUIDE2010/11

Page 2: ULU Guide 2010/11

The ULU Social Centre is the heart of our community. It’s the place where you can come and eat, drink, dance, swim, look after yourself, take a break and more. Most importantly, it’s a place to meet people.

Welcome to ULU

A lot of students' unions are run primarily as businesses. However, while we want to make sure the accounts keep ticking over, we think that the most valuable thing for students is to have an open space for our community. So, you don’t have to buy anything to come along.

The building is on Malet Street, on the Bloomsbury campus, really close to Goodge Street, Russell Square and Euston tube stations, so there’s no excuse not to come and check it out.

You can bring people along. While it’s first and foremost for ULU members, that doesn’t mean you can’t bring along your mates. Plus, you can get an ‘Associate Membership’ if you’re not a ULU student and benefit from all our fab facilities and special rates (more info on this on page 2).

Over the coming year, with the huge threats to the funding of our education and union,

we hope the building will serve not only as a place for people to meet and organise against the cuts, but also somewhere that we can show our alternative.

The social centre is more than a large building, it’s evidence that being a student in London isn’t just money, studies and work, but about being part of a vibrant, diverse community, worthwhile for what it is now, not just what we might achieve in the future.

It’s your space. If you want to book a room for a meeting or a debate, or need a venue for a society fundraiser, come and talk to the ULU team and see how we can help. Our offices are on the second floor and we’ll always be really happy to see you, even if we’re a bit busy when you pop upstairs.

Turn the page to see more about what we’re planning this year...see youlou soon

...just a few things you will find at the ULU Freshers' Fayre on 1st October followed by the first ever Freshers' Festival until early in the next morning complete with Jamaican BBQ, World Music room, Heythrop’s amazing dub-slam poetry, SOAS’ samba band, cheesy pop and much more. If you’re reading this after the event, don’t worry, many of these things will be continued throughout the year.

ULU is your union. We will be putting decisions back into your hands this year with the re-introduction of mass general meetings, liberation networks, online discussions and lots of ways for you to influence what goes on here.

You don't have to be a UL student to be a member - see www.ulu.co.uk for more details.

ULU is hosting the breakfast before the NUS No Cuts demo on 10th November so pop in to get freshened up before leaving at 1.00pm. Other demos and actions are in the diary on page 17.

ULU Social Centre is child-friendly, has alcohol–free areas and is totally accessible. Contact us to get full details on any restrictions before your visit.

Here are a few things we have planned so far:

Football, paintball, tango and triathlon. Magicians, facepainting, Pimms and protests...

2010: Making it happen
