Over the last decade, Hugh OConnor has been playing a lot of great jazz

saxop hone for pe op le who aren t p articularly listening t o him. This CD should

remedy t hat. For the p ast four years O Connor has played every Sunday a t

a nice restaurant-b ar in Ott aw a s Bywa rd Market c alled Che z Lucien. The

drinkers and diners ap plau d respec tfully and som e of t hem listen intent ly, but

mostly its a drinking-dining place and the music is background to the

chatter. Before this, OConnor worked for five years at another Ottawa

restau rant in the sam e kind of env ironm ent. There we re othe rs be fore tha t.

And yet, when you w alk into t he restaurant a nd hear Hugh singing his wa y

through a standard or a jazz classic with an old friend on piano like Mark

Ferguson or J.P. Allain, you know that this music needs undivided attention.

Given the quality of music on display whenever OConnor performs, it is

astonishing tha t this is his first rec ording as leade r in a 60-yea r ca reer. In a

way, it recreates, without the tinkling of glasses, the atmosphere at Chez

Lucien.For this CD, O Conn or c hose his sidem en from am ong Ott aw a s A-list. The

fac t tha t they w ere also o ld friends didnt hurt. It helps to ma ke be tter music

den? This release is a series of purely innovative covers like "SmellsLike Teen Spirit" and "Cars" among many others, as designed withsitars and laid-back ambient grooves on the mind. Some of thesubsequent tracks are actually distinguishable, and caused me to whirlalong with their respective videos coursing through my brain. Othersweren't so recognizable, and caused me quite a shock when I looked atthe liner to see what I was listening to. This is a great, solid album,wonderfully constructed musically, and really funny at the same time. Ican't find a reason *not* to listen to this album, in fact, I can't take it outof my CD player.
