Prospects UMD will be favored to win its third straigh t Minnesota

Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title chis fall. Coach Jim Ma losky does not, however, wear the favor-

ites tag with ease. Graduation Io s s es of key personnel have weakened the squad and created some problem positions.

All agree that the '62 Bulldogs will be a solid eleven, but there is some doubt that they can generate che over-whelming offense displayed in '6l.

ENDS-The best offensive ends in UMD football annals, Tom Adams and Dave Lindstrom have graduated creating the prime problem spot for Coach Malosky. Three lettermen, Gus Koh 1 ts, Fran Murphy and Gordy Johnson, return to provide good defensive ability but only fair pass catching.

TACKLES-In Ron Kosteliz, UMD graduates its best interior lineman but the pos ition is still fairly solid. Ed Galarneault is a fixture in one spot with Dick Carlson, Bob Galarneault and Dick Allison in the bat cl e for the other. Carlson held the edge in the spring. All are solid veterans.

GUARDS-Anothe r key figure, Pat Delaney, has depart-ed but veteran talent remains. The weakness here is a lack of speed and depth.

Jack McDowell, a rop defensive cornerman, will s tart along witheither Dave Schwartz, Bob Tusler , Pac Fahey or Junior College transfer Dave Jankovich.

CENTER-Jerry Wherley and Buck Nystrom, co-regulars last season make this one of the strongest positions on the team .

QUARTERBACK-There is still some question about Bob aslund's passing ability, especially with the problem at end. There is, however, Ii t t 1 e concern with his field generalship or running ability. Al Hansen, a senior, provides depth.

HALFBACKS-U~fD may have the best pair of halfbacks in the state in John Naches he im and Bruce Johnson. The pair combined for 1342 yards and 160 points last season a nd promise co be better in their final year. Jerry Petricka and Dick LeBeau give the position real good depth.

F UL LB ACK- Letterman Ken Schloer is expected to be the most improved performer on the team and should, before graduation, be the best fullback Duluthians have seen . Dick Fis her, a sophomore would be a regular on many other teams, so Malosky is void of worries here.

General Wrap-up Strong throughout the backfield, with ha lfback and full-

back solid positions . Quarterback solid, but thin. Solid at center and tackle but with numerous problems

in rest of line. Guard and end situations are crit ical. General opinio n is that although c ea m will be a cham-

pionship contender, it will not have the overpowering s trength of last season.
