THE RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 5-8-3 overall and 3-6-3 in WCHA play (tied for 8th place with Michigan Tech University and the University of Wisconsin) while Alaska Anchorage sports a 3-7-4 record in all games and a 1-6-3 league mark (12th place). The Seawolves have managed just one victory (3-1 over visiting St. Cloud State University on Dec. 1) in their last 10 outings (1-6-3).
HOW THEY RANK: Here is how UMD and Alaska Anchor-age stacked up in the latest USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls:

Besides capturing the school’s first NCAA champion-ship two years ago, his Bulldogs have posted four consecutive 22-win seasons while advancing to four NCAA tournaments (2004, 2009, 2011 and 2012), two Frozen Fours (2004 and 2011) and seven of the past 10 WCHA Final Five playoff events. During the course of the 2011-12 season, the Bulldogs set a club record by going unbeaten in 17 straight games and were ranked first in both major weekly polls (USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine for a program-best nine consecutive weeks. 2009, UMD became the first play-in game participant to ever claim the Final Five title and, later that spring, strung together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami University 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 48, turned UMD into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a generation, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 28-13-4 overall) and highest WCHA finish (second place on a 19-7-2 mark) since 1992-93. For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com and uscho.com. In 2002-03, Sandelin’s charges went 22-15-5 overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA with a 14-10-4 mark while experiencing the great-est one-season turnaround of any league club that winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a 13-24-1 record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin officially signed on as a member of the Bulldog staff on March 31, 2000 following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North Dakota. Prior to joining the Fighting Sioux (who won two NCAA titles during his tenure), Sandelin spent the 1993-94 season as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Association’s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North Dakota in 1985-86 by be-ing named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and an All-American second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (1990-91) and Minnesota North Stars (1991-92). Sandelin, one of just two active WCHA coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens’ second-round pick in the 1982 NHL draft (40th choice overall). He served as Team USA’s head coach at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. at that same event last winter.
Dave Shyiak (Northern Michigan University, 1993) is in his eighth year at the helm of the Alaska Anchorage puck program and has a 79-159-30 record to show for it (including an 8-10-2 mark against UMD). Shyiak signed on as the fourth head coach in the 26-year his-tory of the Alaska Anchorage hockey program in June 2005 after serving a 10-season assistant coaching stint at his alma mater, Northern Michigan. During that decade-long stretch, the Wildcats posted seven 20-win seasons, earned six Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament berths and made one NCAA postseason appearance (1998-99). In 1994-95, Shyiak was employed as the general manager and head coach of the British Columbia Hockey League’s Merritt Centennials and as the head coach of the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League’s Kimberley Dynamites one year earlier. A four-year letterman at Northern Michigan, Shyiak co-captained the Wildcats to the 1991 NCAA title.
THE RIVALRY: This weekend’s series will mark the 76th and 77th meetings ever between UMD and Alaska Anchorage. The Bulldogs hold a commanding 43-20-12 lead in the rivalry, which began on Nov. 8, 1985 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center,
but are just 15-14-6 lifetime in Anchorage and 6-6-2 in their last 14 meetings overall with Seawolves. The Bulldogs went 3-1 against Alaska Anchorage one year ago, rolling to a pair of victories (5-0 and 3-1) Nov. 11-12 at AMSOIL Arena before splitting a two-game set three months later in Anchorage (a 4-1 triumph and 3-2 loss on Feb. 3-4).
LAST WEEKEND: The Bulldogs swapped wins with Bemi-dji State University in their final home appearances of 2012, opening up with a 4-2 triumph on Friday before falling 2-1 the following evening. Senior center Jake Hendrickson scored twice while his linemate, senior right winger Keegan Flaherty, turned in a two-point night (one goal and one assists) on Friday for UMD, which struck three times in the third period. In the rematch, the Bulldogs outshot their intrastate rivals 34-19 (13-2 in the final period) but had just sopho-more right winger Caleb Herbert’s late third-period goal -- with the extra attacker -- to show for it.
Alaska Anchorage skated out of the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato, Minn., empty handed last weekend after being bounced twice (3-1 and 3-0) by WCHA rival Minnesota State University-Mankato. Matt Bailey
accounted for the lone Seawolf goal in the series, which came 1:49 into the opening period Friday night.
AYE, AYE CAPTAIN: Left winger Cody Danberg is being entrusted with the team captaincy duties for the 69th edition of UMD hockey while a pair of fellow seniors -- right winger Keegan Flaherty and defenseman Drew Olson -- are serving as assistant team captains.
WCHA FORECAST: In their annual preseason poll, the WCHA head coaches collectively forecasted a sixth-place league finish for UMD in 2012-13. The University of Minnesota (11 first-place votes and 121 points) was tabbed as the team to beat followed by North Dakota (one first-place vote and 110 pts.), the Uni-versity of Denver (91 pts.), St. Cloud State University (90 pts.) and Wisconsin (70 pts.). Alaska Anchorage, meanwhile, was slotted 12th among the 12 league schools. UMD, which garnered 69 points, checked in at No. 5 for the second year in a row in the 94X WCHA Media Poll.
THAT’S ALL SHE WROTE: UMD, along with current WCHA colleagues Colorado College, Denver, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota and St. Cloud

State will hook up with the new eight-team National Collegiate Hockey Conference next fall. The Bulldogs have been members of the WCHA since the 1965-66 season.
SAVING SOME OF HIS BEST HOCKEY FOR LAST: Senior left winger Mike Seidel, who has picked up at least one point in 14 of UMD’s 16 outings to date (he was blanked last Saturday night by Bemidji State and in a 2-0 home loss to Wisconsin on Oct. 26), continues to pace the Bulldogs in scoring with 10 goals and eight assists. Those 10 goals are bettered by only four other NCAA II combatants at the moment while his six power play scores are tops in the nation (he shares that honor with St. Lawrence University’s Greg Carey). Seidel, whose personal best 10-game scoring streak was terminated this past Saturday, also ranks 14th nationally and is third in the WCHA in shots on goal (a 3.94 per night average).
SECOND NIGHT BLIGHT: UMD has yet to win a rematch game this year, going 0-5-3 on that particular evening. That pretty much explains why the Bulldogs enter this weekend still in search of their first series sweep of the 2012-13 season.
EVEN STEVEN: Freshman Matt McNeely (3-4-1, 2.84, .892) and junior Aaron Crandall (2-4-2, 3.10, 884) have each made seven starts in goal for the Bulldogs this season. Crandall, who is 14-8-3 in 28 career appearances, has faced Alaska Anchorage only once previously – on Oct. 23, 2010 when he turned aside all 26 Seawolf shots for his first collegiate shut out in a 6-0 victory.
SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY: The last time the Bulldogs and Seawolves butted heads (Feb. 2-3, 2012), UMD entered the weekend holding the No. 1 spot in the uscho.com poll -- as well as the PairWise rankings. Alaska Anchorage ended the Bulldogs’ school-record eight-week run as the nation’s top dog by prevailing 3-2 in game two of that series. UMD dropped to No. 3 in the ensuing uscho.com poll and never got slot-ted higher than second (it did that twice) during the remainder of the season.
NIFTY NEWBIES: UMD’s rookie class is the fourth highest-scoring group in the country (along with St. Cloud State University) at the moment, amassing 43 points on 15 goals and 28 assists. UMD left winger Austin Farley is tied for second among all NCAA fresh-men with seven goals and nine assists for 16 points (three less than Miami University’s Riley Barber) while center Tony Cameranesi is tied for sixth with 15 points. Cameranesi’s nine power points are the second most turned in by any WCHA skater and one behind league leader Mike Seidel. In addition, Andy Welinski shares the WCHA scoring lead for first-year defensemen with 10 points on one goal and nine assists.

POWER SURGE:The Bulldogs have struck at least once with the man advantage in nine of their last 10 games and now possess the nation’s fifth best power play percentage at 25.0. UMD’s 19 power play goals are bettered by only one other team in the nation – Union College with 20.
THAT’S A PLUS: Austin Farley (+5), the youngest member of the 2012-13 Bulldogs (he turned 19 last month), and junior defenseman Tim Smith (+1) are the only two UMD skaters who currently sport positive plus-minus numbers. Senior defenseman Wade Bergman is an impressive +21 for his career while sophomore blueliner Chris Casto right behind at a +19.
BULLDOG BITS: This weekend will be the Bulldogs’ first two outings on a 200’ x 100’ Olympic-sized ice surface in 2012-13 ... Sophomore center Adam Krause’s shorthanded goal (his first collegiate tally) in UMD’s 7-3 triumph at Michigan Tech on No. 30 is just the second by a Bulldog since the 2011 NCAA playoffs. Senior right winger Keegan Flaherty had the other shortie, which also came against Michigan Tech on Dec. 2, 2011 in Houghton, Mich. Over that same period of time, the Bulldogs have been scored upon while on the power play only three times with two of those coming last season (by Michigan Tech on Jan. 27, 2012 and the University of Notre Dame on Oct. 8, 2011) and the other occurring earlier this year (Nov. 24) versus St. Cloud State. UMD hasn’t ceded a shorthanded goal on the road since Jarrett Burton of Clarkson University turned the trick on Jan. 4, 2011 ... The 69 shots UMD attempted last Saturday in its 2-1 setback to visiting Bemidji State equalled a 2012-13 single-game high ... The Bulldogs are unbeaten in 38 of their last 43 overtime games (15-5-23 -- 0-1-3 in 2012-13) stretching back to the 2008-09 season opener. Among active Bulldogs, only two have an overtime goal to their collegiate credit -- senior left wingers Cody Danberg (Jan. 11, 2008 vs. Minnesota State-Mankato) and Mike Seidel (March 10, 2012 in UMD’s 3-2 double-overtime victory over visiting Min-nesota State-Mankato in the WCHA playoffs) ... The Bulldogs, who have outshot the opposition in all but three of their 16 outings to date (the exception being both ends of the Notre Dame series on Oct. 18-19 and last Friday versus Bemidji State), are averaging 32.5 shots on goal per night, the 11th highest figure in the country. At the same time, they are giving up 26.8 shots to the opposition, which ranks 10th nationally ... With an average of 17.2 minutes of infraction time per night, the Bulldogs are the nation’s second-most penalized team. Their opponents, haven’t fared much better in this department, accruing 110 penalties (one more than UMD) for a 16.3 minutes per game clip ... Senior right winger Keegan Flaherty has now skated in 97 consecutive games, the longest ironman streak among active Bulldogs while two other seniors -- defenseman Wade Bergman and Jake Hendrick-son -- have both made 81 successive appearances (stretching to Dec. 30, 2010) ... Going back to Feb. 26, 2010, the Bulldogs have lost two or more games in a row only three times and the longest losing streak they’ve had to endure during that stretch is three out-ings (Oct. 8-16, 2011)... Senior team captain Cody Danberg, who because of injuries had taken part in only one game over the previous two seasons (the 2011-12 opener with Notre Dame at AMSOIL Arena), is the first sixth-year senior to ever play at UMD ... Since suffering a 3-2 setback to Bemidji State in the opening

FEELING A BIT OF A DRAFTSeven members of the 2012-13 Bulldogs have been drafted by National Hockey League clubs including:
Class Year Round TeamJoe Basaraba 2010 3rd FloridaTony Cameranesi 2011 5th TorontoDan DeLisle 2009 3rd ChicagoCaleb Herbert 2010 5th WashingtonDrew Olson 2008 4th ColumbusMax Tardy 2009 7th St. LouisAndy Welinski 2011 3rd Anaheim
round of the 2011 WCHA Final Five, UMD is 21-1-4 when taking a lead into the third period. On the flip side, the last time the Bulldogs overcame a second-intermission deficit to win was on Nov. 10, 2010 when they erased a 2-1 Michigan Tech advantage by scoring four times in the final 20 minutes of regulation on their way to a 5-3 home triumph. UMD is 0-20-2 (0-9-1 in 2011-12 and 0-5-0 this season) in that situation since then.... The Bulldogs haven’t been shut out in a regular season road outing in nearly six years (2-0 vs. Bemidji State on Jan. 5, 2007), but they’ve come up empty on six regular season occasions in Duluth over that same stretch ... Up until four weeks ago, UMD had cracked the Top 20 in every USCHO.com poll since Nov. 2, 2009 ...The last of sophomore defense-man Chris Casto’s two career goals to date came at the expense of Alaska Anchorage (Nov. 11, 2011 in Duluth) while senior left winger Dan DeLisle’s first collegiate goal came against those same Seawolves (he scored twice on Oct. 23, 2010 in Duluth) as did sophomore defenseman Derik Johnson’s (Nov. 12, 2011 in Duluth).
2010-11 NCAA Champions • Home of 5 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners
ON TAP: The Bulldogs will return to the ice on Dec. 28-29 to take on the University of Maine in the first round of Florida College Hockey Classic. Cornell Uni-versity and 2012 NCAA Frozen Four runnerup Ferris State University will also be on hand in Estero, Fla.
