For over half a century, the venerable Romano

Gymnasium has been the home of University of

Minnesota Duluth basketball. The UMD men have

parlayed their home-court advantage into a .751

winning percentage and the Bulldog women have

enjoyed even more success, winning at a .772

clip at the on-campus facility.

Since the 1979-80 season, UMD has posted a

sparkling 321-95 mark at home, winning at least

10 games on its own court in all but 12 seasons.

The Bulldogs recorded 10 or more home victories

in seven straight seasons from 1984-85 through

1990-91 and set a school record with 15 home

victories in 1988-89, a season during which

UMD made its second straight national tourna-

ment appearance. In addition, the Bulldogs

have turned in just one losing record at Romano

Gymnasium in the last 29 seasons.

The Bulldogs are also a perfect 20-0 all-time

in postseason games at Romano Gymnasium, a

record that included a 16-0 mark in NAIA District

play in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now a

member of the NCAA and one of the nation’s

premier circuits, the North Sun Intercollegiate

Conference, UMD continues to bring the coun-

try’s top Division II teams to campus.

Romano Gym can hold up to 2,759 specta-

tors since undergoing an extensive $2 million

face lift following the 1986-87 season. The

facility was named in honor of the late Ralph

Romano, UMD’s Director of Intercollegiate

Athletics from 1969 to 1983.

Founded in 1932, what is now known as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has enjoyed a varied but successful existence in the Upper Midwest region it calls home. In the spring of 1992, the NSIC was formed by merging the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (men), and the women’s Northern Sun Conference, which had existed since 1979. The NSIC is currently made up of institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. During the 2008-09 season, the NSIC expanded to a 14-team league with the addition of Augustana College, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State University-Mankato and St. Cloud State University. Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls will compete as members of the NSIC for the first time in 2012, bringing the conference to a total of 16 teams.

Since the league’s inception, various institutions have competed in the NSIC. Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Winona State University are charter members and have remained in the conference for its entire 80-year history. Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State were also charter members, but left the league in 1981 (MSU departed 1969 only to return eight years later). UMD, which left and rejoined the league on two occasions, was also an original member. Other current league participants joined in later years: Southwest Minnesota State University in 1969, Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (Neb.) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota-Crookston

in 1999, and the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006. The University of Minnesota-Morris became a NIC member in 1966, but the Cougars opted to join the NCAA Division III ranks in 2003. Michigan Tech, now of the Great Lakes Athletic Conference, was a part of the NIC from 1969 to 1977.

Before the NSIC became eligible for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship competition in 1995, its member institutions had an extremely rich tradition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The NIC and NSC’s tenure in the NAIA included several national championship teams and individuals as well as many national qualifiers.

In addition to basketball, the NSIC holds championships in seven other sports for men and eight others for women (cross country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball).

In recent years the NSIC has put itself on the map with national titles in several sports. Winona State made three straight trips to the NCAA Division II men’s basketball title game,

winning the 2006 and 2008 crowns and falling in the 2007 championship on a last-second shot. The league then laid claim to a national title in women’s hoops when Minnesota State Mankato won a national championship in 2009.

Concordia-St. Paul won its fifth consecutive national volleyball title in 2011, while UMD took home NCAA II football titles in 2008 and 2010 on identical 15-0 records (the only NCAA II program to put up a 15-0 mark more than once.)

COACHES & STAFF

STEPH REITERassistant CoaCH, FirSt SeaSon

Four years after putting the wraps on a rewarding playing career at UMD, Steph Reiter returned to her alma mater this past May to take over as the Bulldogs’ assistant coach. Reiter, a native of

Coon Rapids, Minn., and a Blaine High School alumna, has been employed since last July as the director of women’s basketball operations

at North Dakota State University, where she was involved with team travel coordination, video exchange, recruiting correspondence and overseeing community service event. Prior to joining the Bison staff, Reiter was a University of Sioux Falls graduate assistant coach for two seasons (2010-12) and her responsibilities included film exchange, preliminary breakdown of scout, monitoring academic progress, coaching the junior varsity, and assisting in practice and game preparation. She began her coaching career in an assistant role at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Upper Iowa University, serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator for the Midwest region

and its academic supervision during the 2009-10 season. Reiter, 27, was a member of the Bulldog basketball program for five seasons (she sat out all of 2005-06 with a knee injury) and started 22 of 113 games in the backcourt. In addition to securing NSIC/North Central Conference All-Academic honors on three occasions, she also made the dean’s list all 10 of her semesters at UMD. Reiter, who co-captained the Bulldogs as a senior in 2008-09, graduated from UMD in 2009 with a B.F.A. degree in graphic arts and, three years later, earned a Master’s degree in business administration from Sioux Falls.

LAUREN STOdOLAGraDUate assistant, FirSt SeaSon

The UMD women’s coaching staff expands by one for the 2013-14 season as Lauren Stodola joins as a graduate assistant to head coach Annette Wiles. Stodola comes to the Bulldogs

after a four-year playing career at Grand Valley State University while continuing her education in UMD’s Masters of Education program. “We are very excited to add Lauren to our coaching staff,” said Wiles. “Her work ethic, basketball experience, and high recommendations make her excellent for this position.”

Stodola earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education with a concentration in sports management at Grand Valley State, and served as an intern to the senior women’s administrator involved in game and event operations. She also served on the Student Athletic Advisory Council while earning the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic Award for three seasons. She earned All-GLIAC preseason honors before the 2012-13 season before an injury ended her playing career In addition to coaching at Grand Valley State’s women’s basketball camps the past three seasons, Stodola has served as the associate head coach for the AAU Grand Rapids Storm 15U Elite team and participated in the “So, You Want to be a Coach?” program at the 2013 WBCA national convention in New Orleans.

Anne t te W i les embarks on her 21st season as a collegiate head basketbal l coach in 2013-14 and her sixth season as the head coach at UMD.

Since her arrival at UMD, Wiles has

brought stability and success to the Bulldog program guiding her team into the post season in each of the last five seasons and to the NCAA Division II playoffs twice. She’s also produced nine All-NSIC selections, one NSIC Player of the Year, one NSIC Freshman of the Year, and two NSIC Defensive Players of the Year. In addition, 34 of her Bulldogs have attained NSIC All-Academic Team honors while the team has collectively compiled a grade point average of 3.31 during that five-year stretch.

Prior to taking the reigns in Duluth, Wiles served as the head coach at her alma mater, Fort Hays State University (Kansas) for eight seasons after coaching Bethany College (Kansas) the previous seven. Wiles now owns a career collegiate coaching record of 380-198, including an 83-58 mark at UMD.

In eight winters at Fort Hays State, Wiles guided the Tigers - who competed in both the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association and

the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference during her tenure - to a record of 136-92. Wiles led Fort Hays State to its first-ever NCAA II tournament appearance in 2004-05, and helped produce 15 all-conference selections as well as three Academic All-Americans.

While overseeing the women’s basketball program at Bethany College, Wiles put together a career record of 164-49. She led the Swedes to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament on four occasions, advancing as far as the final eight in 1995. Wiles finished with 20-plus wins in each of her seven seasons patrolling the Bethany sidelines, and was named the Kansas Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1999. She also coached 25 Academic All-Americans at Bethany and her 1998 club’s 3.71 cumulative grade point average was the highest of any NAIA squad.

Wiles launched her coaching career as an assistant on staff at Fort Hays State for two seasons (1991-93) following the conclusion of her college playing days.

Born in Hunter, Kan., Wiles starred for four seasons at Fort Hays State and helped lead her team to a NAIA national championship as a senior in 1990-91. A two-time NAIA All-American and member of both the Tiger Sports (class of 2000) and RMAC (2003) Halls of Fame, Wiles graduated as Fort Hays State’s leader in career points (2,407) and rebounds (961). Her outstanding

collegiate playing career was recognized when she was one of 12 players selected to the RMAC All-Time Women’s Basketball Team.

Wiles, who makes her home in Duluth, received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Fort Hays State in 1991, and earned a Master of Science in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration two years later from that same institution.
