Bio4EnergyBio4Energy is an international research environment based in northern Sweden that develops methods and tools for conducting efficient and sustainable biorefinery based on woody raw materials and refuse, as well as organic waste. In February 2016, 210 researchers were members of Bio4Energy, each affiliated with one of the five founding members of the research environment. They are Umeå University, Luleå University of Technology, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the research institutes Innventia and the SP Energy Technology Centre at Piteå. Bio4Energy also has an extensive network of industrial actors in the biorefinery and bioenergy sectors. The idea behind Bio4Energy is to bring together the best brains active in the specific field of biorefinery research and development based on feedstock from the forest and some (other) types of organic waste, and to fill knowledge gaps by recruiting top class scientists from all over the world into the research environment. Bio4Energy is world leading in focal areas of the research which its members perform. For more information, visit: www.bio4energy.se

Artificial Leaf and Solar FuelsArtificial Leaf Umeå and Solar Fuels Umeå are interdiciplinary research projects lead by Johannes Messinger. Scientists in the projects focus on the development of technical devices for splitting water into H2 and O2 with sunlight, and on important aspects of natural photosynthesis. The projects are funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and Umeå University. Several research groups from the Department of Chemistry, Umeå Plant Science Centre, the Department of Physics are collaborating in sub-projects to reach their goals towards artificial photosynthesis.

Mechanism of water-oxidation by artificial catalystsGoal: Elucidation of the mechanism of water oxidation by artificial catalysts such as Co-oxides via structural and mechanistic studies. A major focus is on studying substrate water-binding and oxidation via time-resolved membrane inlet mass spectrometry and 18O-isotope labeling. This is combined with electrochemistry, EPR and X-ray spectroscopy. PI: Johannes Messinger. Co-workers: Anurag Kawde, and Wai Ling Kwong.

Synthesis of novel chromophores for efficient light absorption and charge separationGoal: Synthesis and characterization of novel chromophores, and coupling them to surfaces such as carbon nano materials. These constructs will form the basis for organic solar cells based on bulk heterojunctions. PIs: Bertil Eliasson, Ludvig Edman, and Thomas Wågberg. Co-workers: Srikanth Revoju.

Organic solar cellsGoal: Develop novel methods for the creation and stabilization of the critical nano-morphology in the active material of organic solar cells, which can be later adapted for artificial leaf devices. PIs: Ludvig Edman and Bertil Eliasson. Co-workers: Jenny Enevold

Synthesis, characterization and functionalization of carbon nanomaterialsGoal: Synthesis, functionalization of C-60 nanorods and other C-based materials with metal oxide catalysts and organic chromophores. This includes theoretical studies on the geometric and electronic structures of these constructs. PIs: Thomas Wågberg, Bertil Eliasson, Johannes Messinger, and Ludvig Edman. Co-workers: Eduardo Garcia-Espino, Tiva Sharifi, Guangzhi Hu, Christian Larsen, and Robin Sandström.

Construction and characterization of Artificial Leaf devicesGoal: Development and characterization of wireless device for solar H2 and O2 production from water. Presently Si and TiO2 based devices are being developed. These serve as ideal test cases and bench marks for the final organic solar cell based devices. PIs: Jyri Pekka Mikkola, Krisztian Kordas, and Johannes Messinger. Co- workers: Hasna Bourajoini, and Tung Pham Ngoc. Visit: www.solarfuels.eu.

The MicroBiorefine project was formed in 2015 with the total project’s budget of about 34 MSEK, mainly supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and FORMAS. This project brings together expertise of different disciplines and utilizes advanced analytical and biochemical methods, as well as unique opportunities to combine algal/cyanobacterial cultivation in pilot scale associated with wastewater reclamation and processes in power plants. Seven research teams at Umeå University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå and Luleå University are executing the project, which is also linked to infrastructural resources at the SP Technical Research Institute.

The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT)SBT at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences was formed as a strategic move for rejuvenation of forest industry from more traditional pathways to the expanding sector of biorefineries. SBT performs high-quality research and under- and postgraduate education in collaboration with society and industry with the aim to develop a bio-based economy where biomaterials are dominating resources. Focus is put on value chains within the bio-based industry and on characterization, separation, modification, processing, use and recycling of biomaterials in an ecologically sustainable way and for cost effective causes.

The Biofuel Technology Centre (BTC), a national pilot plant for upgrading of solid biomass, acts under the SBT umbrella. BTC is a research pilot plant designed for development of solid biomass refining processes and is also a resource for educational purposes. The facility is functional for a wide spectrum of solid biomasses through all types of handling, upgrading and combustion. Quality parameters are controlled through chemical and physical characterization and through various kinds of on- and at-line spectroscopy. Batches from a few kilograms to several tons can be handled.

Examples for projects:

MOBILE FLIP (Mobile and Flexible Industrial Processing of Biomass) – BTC is in charge of all feedstock procurement, pre-treatment, and compaction actions in this H2020 project that aims at developing and demonstrating mobile processes for the treatment of underexploited agro- and forest based biomass resources into products and intermediates. Process concepts have been designed around the key technologies pelletizing, torrefaction, slow pyrolysis, hydrothermal pretreatment and carbonisation. www.mobileflip.eu/

Bioenergy combine and sustainable biomass resource management in Jilin: innovation and demonstration – SBT coordinates the technological development needed to support demonstrations and commercialization of Swedish bioenergy combine technology in China. Swedish Biosteam AB in cooperation with Chinese Great Resources Ltd will be major industrial partners and demonstrate a small scale bioenergy combine system, in Jilin province in China for electricity (5 MW) and heat production. The demonstrated bioenergy combine system will be able to integrate local industries such as mushroom cultivation, wood processing and even bio-pellet production. www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-biomaterials-technology/research/jilindemon22/

The project will result in new fundamental knowledge of photosynthetic microorganisms from northern habitats and opportunities to exploit their unique properties in the development of resource-efficient processes for a biobased society. Local algal and cyanobacterial strains adapted to the Nordic climate are tested for growth in waste water (municipal as well as industrial). After up-scaling to 9000 or 40 000 liters the produced biomass is characterized, uptake of contaminants is investigated. The process is evaluated by modeling and energetic calculations. UREM 2016 - Understanding and applying photosynthesis for a safe futureThe Umeå Renewable Energy meeting 2016 is dedicated to presentations and discussions about how

fuels and valuable products can be made with the help of sunlight. Examples are the storage of light

energy in molecular fuels employing artificial photosynthesis, the production of biofuels and biomass

by algae and trees, the cleaning of waste water and flue gasses using photosynthetic organisms, and

the production of fish food by algae.
