Special Music “And Can It Be That I Should Gain” Laurie Jenkins, Earl Sides, Sam Sides, & Kathy Sides Scripture Readings Responsive Reading: Psalm 119:1-6, 105-112 (NRSV) L: Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD. P: Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, L: who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. P: You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. L: O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! P: Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. L: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. P: I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to observe your righteous ordinances. L: I am severely afflicted; give me life, O LORD, according to your word. P: Accept my offerings of praise, O LORD, and teach me your ordinances. L: I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law. P: The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts. L: Your decrees are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. P: I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end. Epistle Reading: Romans 8:1-11 (NRSV) There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law--indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

*Hymn TFWS #2190 “Bring Forth the Kingdom”

*Gospel Reading: Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 (NRSV) That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!" "Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches 4

away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty." Sermon “Toil and Soil” Rev. Kathy Sides

Pastoral Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand” Arr. Cindy Berry Doxology UMH#94

Prayer of Dedication O God, along with our contributions, accept our offering of praise and our offering of ourselves. You have given us life and guidance for living. You have made us partakers of your own Spirit. We rejoice in the opportunity to receive and share your Word. May the ministry in which all of us have a share bear much fruit, bringing in an abundant harvest for your realm. Amen.

Welcome, Announcements, Joys and Concerns

*Call to Worship: Leader: God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Open yourselves this day to receive the Word. People: We want to follow the light. We come now to be instructed in God’s ways. Leader: Let us open ourselves to the Spirit, That we might learn of God. People: We reach out for more than we can see and hear. We long to know Love’s embrace deep within. Leader: The Spirit of God raised Jesus from the dead. That Spirit dwells in you and offers you new life. People: We praise God, who saves us and gives us hope. We worship God, who cares for each one of us. *Hymn UMH #733 "Marching to Zion” *Unison Prayer All-knowing God, we know you understand us more deeply than we understand ourselves. You know how much the cares of this life weigh us down. Our thoughts and actions are often shortsighted. We take so much for granted, failing to value the wonder of life all around us, the gift of family and friends, and the amazing reality of your Spirit dwelling in us. We want to be like good soil, receiving the seed of your word with understanding that nourishes roots of trust and joy. Free us from all that keeps us from bearing fruit for you. Amen.

Welcome! We are a community of faith in worship and action,

open to all in the spirit and love of God.

Please sign the friendship pad in the pew. Everyone is welcome to stay for refreshments and a time of visiting with your church family follow-ing the service. We welcome children in our worship service. However, if necessary, we do have a nursery and cry room on the second floor. It is unat-tended so you will need to remain with your child. The cry room is located to the left at the top of the stairs and a nursery is located to the right (4th door on your right) at the top of the stairs.
