This is something I have been thinking about a lot in the past month. No, not so much depression or the need to have a drink. We have just come through elections and despite all the service delivery protests we have seen the status quo remain in our government. Apathy seems to be rampant. Perhaps the 2nd sign of apathy mentioned above can explain the election outcome but hopefully this is not the reason for Apathy in our industry.

Apathy in the club industry is something that I have been really struggling with of late. Too many club members don’t bother attending club or Union AGM’s or participating in club socials and don’t take the time to get involved in their club in any way. Our local Union haven’t had a quorum at their AGM for about 5 years. When times are good participation at meetings is normally low but times are not so good now ?

Most clubs would be thrilled to get a 30% response to a member survey - that would leave us guessing how the other 70% feel. Clubs are also finding it harder to find committed volunteers to serve on committees. I am somewhat more understanding of these volunteers as it is not their primary focus and they have other commitments that pay the bills but nevertheless this should not be an excuse for apathy on their behalf - if you put your name forward to serve on a committee then you should at least be obliged to attend and be prepared for meetings.

However, my real beef that inspired this article is the many managers at our clubs that don’t participate in industry educational and networking opportunities. During the past three months there have been several industry educational workshops and networking opportunities and there has been dismal attendance. Each one of these sessions created such incredible learning experiences that even the most seasoned club administrator would get great value out of them. The costs have been kept incredibly low and in many cases are free as to minimise barriers to participation.

In today’s incredibly tough economy our clubs need educated and committed leadership that is aware of all industry trends and challenges. We should be making educational and networking opportunities a priority. I will most likely get the ire of a few of my industry colleagues who will not like being portrayed poorly in a public forum but I am very happy to have the debate with them and see if they can change my mind.

Definition of APATHY: Feeling indifferent or lacking emotion, often a sign of depression or misuse of alcohol or drugs.

I had been put in a difficult position before when I was contacted by a committee to ascertain whether the manager of their club was participating in industry events. It was important for that club that their manager was involved. I was as diplomatic as possible and the manager did start attending but was asked to leave a short while later. At that stage the manager was very keen to get another position in a club but through years of not networking not many people knew who he was.

Poor attendance at these sessions not only reflects poorly on individuals but unfortunately shows stakeholders like suppliers and sponsors that we are not a very committed or organized industry. If we want to be taken seriously and get the respect we need then we need to step up and be more professional.

There are many core competencies that managers require and most of us need continuous development in all of these. Networking and educational opportunities are plentiful and I would

really urge all managers to prioritise time for them both for their own professional development as well as the success and sustainability of their clubs and our industry.

Committees can do their part by showing interest in what the monthly topics of conversation are in the industry and in some cases allow their managers to attend. Club members should continue to enjoy their facilities and rise to the challenge when asked to participate in club activities. n

The benefits of being in the gym and golf performance have long been discussed and more importantly, proven. Priority number one when golfers enter my gym is to either eradicate pain, or prevent injury or pain from occurring in the future. If we can increase club head speed in the process that would also be a priority. I believe the gym setting can also prove to be an invaluable tool in improving and accelerating changes in the swing.

This final link between the good work in the gym and the practical application in the swing is often missing. In most cases after all, the client is looking to lower their golf scores. So how do we get carryover from the gym to the range or golf course? I believe the process should look like this:1. Swing AnAlySiS - A discussion

about why the client is here, golfing history, what are his misses, objectives etc. The client’s swing is recorded on video. In an ideal world I think it’s important to note that you want the fitness professional present during the lesson as well.

2. MoveMenT Screen - A thorough medical history, sporting background, physical activity profile and movement analysis should take place first. Through the movement screening alone, the golf movement specialist will already have an idea of how the client may swing the club. Having said that, he/she should keep any preconceived notions to themselves until the collaboration between the teaching professional and the movement specialist.

3. collaboraTion - A coming together of findings from both the movement screening and the technical analysis. Both professionals should be present. Ultimately, it’s the teaching pro who decides what is the best way forward for the golfer. However, the input from the fitness professional sheds light on whether or not the golfer has the physical capabilities to make the required changes. A plan of action is then created to either accommodate the physical restrictions, or improve the limitations and change the pattern.

4. STrucTural work - The fitness professional, now clear on the vision for the golfer, attacks the areas of restriction in the gym to give the golfer the ability to make the changes necessary. Once mobility has been addressed. It is important to note, there doesn’t have to be a complete restoration of ideal range of motion. There needs to be an appreciable difference. Once this difference has been observed, we then move through a series of stability exercises, now trying to make use of this new range through a series of exercises starting from the floor and building toward a standing position.

5. TranSiTion - This is the phase I believe that is commonly left out. Once the appreciable difference in movement has been solidified, we must now implement a swing

specific drill to create a kinesthetic awareness of the correct feeling of the new positions in the swing. Kinesthetic awareness refers to the ability to be aware of one’s own body parts (e.g., muscles, tendons, joints), position (e.g., posture), and movement (e.g., tension and relaxation of muscles, shifting of

weight, movement of the body through space). If through a selection of specific movements, assisted by external forces such as resistance bands or medicine balls, we can create the sensation of what the golfer should be feeling in the golf swing, that can only be a good thing.

6. STarT Swinging - With the new-

found movement capability and awareness, the golfer can now look to implement that into his/her swing, together with any drills issued from the teaching professional.

Over the years, the concept of living at a golf course has flourished globally. All you have to do is pack your bags and hit the greens! Adding to that, most properties are situated at world-class championship courses, which truly allows you to sharpen your skills. All of this with the peace of mind knowing that your tee time is either free or discounted. From modern apartments with sunlit terraces to light and airy villas with spectacular views, the living choices are endless. In this feature, we highlight 5 outstanding residential benefits you may or may not expect to reap when you’re waking up next to your favorite course.

1. A Broad Golfing Experience at Cheaper PricesStepping off your doorstep to the fairway is an exciting thought. At locations like Lough Erne Resort, much more is on offer when it comes to living a golfer’s dream. In particular, this selection of cozy, traditionally styled cottages provides the ultimate 36 hole experience.

As one of the top golf resorts in all of Ireland, Lough Erne Resort boasts the ‘top 100’ Faldo Championship Course and the Castle Hume Championship Course. Residents here not only benefit from full membership and playing rights, but also member-guest rates at other nearby golf courses. Additionally, owners can take advantage of the Golf Academy equipped with dedicated PGA professionals

and state of the art technology. It’s at locations such as Lough Erne that in buying a property, you invest in your game as well.

2. Worry-free Property ManagementAphrodite Hills is the first integrated golf, leisure, and real estate development in Cyprus. In addition to having access to the PGA

National Cyprus Golf Course on your doorstep, the real estate options here are far-ranging. Notably, whether you opt to live in your chosen property or utilize it as a rental investment, resorts like Aphrodite Hills offer an extensive range of property management services.

Having someone manage all aspects of your property is a major advantage and leaves you to relax. For instance, a variety of services are available to take care of the garden, pool, home, and landscaping, as well as housekeeping. There’s even a payment administration team to help you seamlessly manage your bills. When life’s little worries are taken care of this effortlessly, you’re free to live life to the fullest.

3. Secure Home, Secure MindLa Reserva Club is a 600-hectare estate of elegant private homes, overlooking the resort’s undulating 18-hole championship course. Notably, the impressive array of contemporary homes are a golfer’s utopia. Although the properties are close to the vibrant and lively city of Marbella, La Reserva Club offers safety by being a gated community. As a result, you can rest assured your home is always safe.

The advantage of this is obvious – gates, surveillance cameras, and trained guards, amongst other things, ensure that

no unwanted people enter the grounds. Further to this, gated communities promote slower vehicle speeds. Consequently, there is greater safety for pedestrians and children, a greater sense of privacy, and ultimately a higher sense of community. With no distractions from unsolicited knocks on the door, you’re free to golf Marbella with no worries.

4. Lifestyle in a Thriving CommunityThe golf course may be at your feet, but there’s also a plethora of other exciting amenities. Quality restaurants, bars, spas, shopping centers, and more are all kept within manicured, welcoming grounds.

Abama Resort is a perfect example of what living in a golf course community entails; everything is in arms reach including a private beach! There’s no better way to relax after a long day on the course than in a top-class restaurant, or spending the night hours with a few drinks. Furthermore, as you’re surrounded by like-minded people who share the same passion, you’ll never be short for dinner guests or beer buddies! Living here is designed to please not only the golfer but the whole family.

5. Inviting Climate and LocationGolf course properties are often situated in locations with warm, tempered climates. Not only is this a treat for the resident, but it can also enable a year-round rental income if desired. The manner in which golf properties are meticulously designed, serviced, and cared for meanstheir value will only increase.

At resorts like Akasha, unique real estate perfectly combines the quality of life with harmonyand nature. Consequently, it’s easy to see why purchasing is an excellent investment.Especially when surrounded by lush tropical landscapes, your property will be worth a good amount of money, which is always a nice thought for the future. n

JUNE - and winter is coming through with a vengeance! Lots of run on the fair-ways and the greens are getting faster and faster in Gauteng while the Cape, hopefully, gets wetter and wetter.

I recently spent an amazing day at Magalies Park watching the Canon SA Dis-abled Open. The highlight for me was a one armed golfer hitting a wedge 130 metres across water into the hole! The fighting spirit and camaraderie among this group of sportsmen is realy something to behold.

Another top 10 finish for Tiger at the Memorial and it would be great for golf if he performs well in the US open.

Next week Tee and Sandwedges is off to Mauritius and the group are staying at the 5 star Long Beach Resort. 3 games of golf, lots to eat and drink and lots of sunshine. Lucky Leigh-Jane will be escorting the group.

Tee and Sandwedges is arranging our first Ladies Pro-Am at Blair Atholl Golf Estate in July. The ladies event 17-20 November and mixed event at Cham-pagne Sports Resort are filling fast so get your entry in soon.

As a Spurs and a Protea cricket supporter not a good month.

See you on the Tee.

IT’S crazy how the months pass by so quickly and even more so since being part of Tee and Sandwedges, ‘print day’ comes around so quickly. Time flies when you having fun! I can’t believe we half way through this year already! May was an exciting month for us, playing lots of golf, sponsoring events and making some amazing new contacts.

The most exciting news for us is the Blair Atholl Ladies Pro Am on the 4th July, de-tails on page 12. We envisage that this will be the first event of a series of Ladies Pro Ams to be held in the second half of this year, so keep an eye out in issues to come.

I leave with a group to Mauritius next week for 5 days of golf and fun in the sun. Mauritius has become an awesome golfing destination and I am really excited about playing there. It’s going to be great to escape the cold weather and I will most definitely get some sand between my toes.

Stay warm and happy golfing

TALKING ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY by John Collier I 083 455 7712 I email [email protected]

Umhlali Country Club is the 2018 – 2019 TOP CLUB in South Africa and World Environment DayWorld Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June each year and is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Above all, World Environment Day is the “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth. To mark this day on an annual basis the TOP CLUB of South Africa for Good Governance and Environmental Compliance survey reporting is announced.

The winner for 2018 -2019 is the Umhlali Country Club, in Balito on the Kwa Zulu Natal North Coast. Over the past year the John Collier Team have once again been collating data from golf clubs throughout South Africa, and according to recent research results published in the John Collier Annual Survey the response rate of clubs participating in the John Collier

Survey was 41% with a national compliance level of 27%. On reviewing these Survey responses there are always those Clubs that stand out as being exceptional in good governance and environmental compliance. Once again there were several strong contenders; however, this year the Umhlali Country Club outshone all others to be the TOP CLUB in South Africa for the Good Governance and Environmental Compliance survey reporting. What Umhlali Country Club did well was to link the sustainability principles of people, profit and planet, into the club’s value system and applying a principled approach to doing business underpinned by the King IV Principles of good governance and embracing transparency and third-party reviews of its governance and environmental compliance. It is these principles that form part of the club’s ethical foundation which underpins its licence to operate.

It is no surprise that just ahead of World Environment Day, the Golf Industry held its sustainability workshops in Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town. These sustainability workshops emphasised the importance of planning, recording and measuring and its links with sustainability. These workshops were supported by the Club Managers Association of Southern Africa, PGA SA and GOLF RSA, and speakers representing Golf Environment Organisation Foundation, Turfgrass Academy, Earth Probiotic, TORO, Clubcar and Sue de Zwart, focused on their products and how their organisations co-operated with the golf industry and thereby adding value to sustainable golf. Whilst three golf club case studies were presented at the workshops, notwithstanding these endeavours, without doubt Umhlali Country Club is currently the national benchmark.

In terms of the TOP CLUB award the John Collier reviewers were really impressed with the work that is being done at the Umhlali Country Club and it is fitting that on World Environment Day the club should be appropriately recognised. Special congratulations must go the Umhlali Country Club Chairman Mike O’Donovan and Management team of General Manager John Boyce, Golf Director Derick Reinke, Course Superintendent Robin Naicker and Course Supervisor Anton Mzimakwe.

At your next meeting why not introduce a short talk-topic on the agenda on sustainability, using World Environment Day and the achievement of Umhlali Country Club to illustrate this important agenda item. n

Girls Golf Day_Flyer.pdf 1 6/3/19 10:10 AM

Golf trips are different from travelling alone. They require some company and preferably company that is as crazy about golf as you are. We all know that travelling as a group in any situation can be very tricky when some egos and personalities clash. So finding a bunch of ladies who were easy going was my number one priority. As much as I had spent time with each of them separately and had only really travelled several times with my golf buddy and long time friend Sonia Booth, they were not friends and had not spent any time together at all. Recipe for disaster…nope not this time. It turned out we were all prepared for fun times minus the drama.

DAY 1, 6:30am, coffee, two cars and four ladies and we were off headed to our 9:30 tee time at the Gary Player Championship course, home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Two of the ladies were playing it for the very first time. The excitement was all around because even though I and Sonia had played there more than a couple of times, it had not been pretty and we are always trying to improve on the previous scores. We arrived with enough time to change and get organised before teeing off but we found a very busy morning field. So we opted to tee off after everyone so as to not feel the pressure of anyone behind us. We were there for fun after all.

The change in tee times gave us enough time to grab some much needed breakfast. Playing the Gary Player will never get old, it Is an ultimate Bucket List moment every single time. The weather gods were kind enough with a sightly overcast cool day that was appreciated by everyone including the caddies because they were in for a slightly longer day than usual, plus when the heat is on, this course can be ten times more brutal. With my newly acquire M6 TaylorMade clubs and vital golf lessons from the good Dr Dickson, I played my best game that day. The short game let me down but I am liking where my game is headed.

My bravest moments came on hole 11, par 4, stroke 10, where I chose to head over the trees on the left instead of the safer open fairway on the right. I cannot describe the satisfaction of walking over that bridge up the fairway to find my ball sitting pretty for an open second shot to the green, which landed just short of the green….then the short game showed me flames and I walked away with a double. How you ask? I too, do not know. The second moment was playing hole 8, par 4, stroke 1, beautifully, second shot on the fringe and 3 putting to end up with bogey. A whole THREE putts.

A couple of pars and plenty of bogeys later, I would do it again. Still a much better score than the last time I was here. I chose to take that away. The day ended with a wonderful dinner at The Grill and my very first attempt at karaoke at the famous Vibes. Lets just say The Counting Crows would sue me for butchering Mr Jones.

DAY 2, my body clock betrayed me, for someone who only got to bed at 1am. I looked outside my window and it was another perfectly cool overcast day, or it seemed like it at the time. A perfect day to play some golf. Breakfast with the girls and everyone was critical but stable and ready for the scenic Lost City Golf Course. I was truly looking forward to this one. It is my favourite of the two courses. Though the last time I played it was at The Gary Player Invitational, where I played like a tool.

The overwhelming excitement of being invited in the first place and so I was back for a make up game. It was a very busy morning on the course with fourballs lining up to tee off and us, the only fourball of ladies. A much better start on the 1st tee than the last time where I almost took the head off of the photographer with my epic shank. The bravery of taking my very new M6 driver off the first tee straight down the middle just before the bunker on the left was evidence enough that I really truly love these new clubs.

Anyone who has played with me will know that the honours of

This Girl’s Golf Diary

LADIES TEES and HIGH TEAthe 1st tee and pretty much every tee after that for at least 6 holes is reserved for the 6 iron. Missed pars on the first two holes for both Sonia and I. It was a sign that this had the potential of getting better up until mother nature came through with the rain and the chill just as I teed off on the 3rd. We rushed back to the clubhouse to stay warm and wait it out. 45 minutes later there was a slight drizzle that we were prepared to play in. Back to the tee box and the rain picked up again and what was a fourball became a twoball. It got cold and wet very quickly, Neo and Seiphati opted to go back to the hotel and get warm, understandably so. Sonia and I were not playing mother natures game, plus we love this course and we are addicts and we had a score to settle with our previous scores here.

So, yellow raincoat, umbrellas and towels to keep us dry and warm, the game was still on. We really were on fire, even with the rain coming down hard at times we were still keeping them on the fairway, our putting seriously let us down. The amount of fun we had in that rain was worth it. Soaking wet and happy, we headed straight to the Spa at the Gary Player Clubhouse to meet the rest of the crew - who we found lounging comfortably in the warmth of the luxury spa.

In all my years of visiting Sun City Resort, I had never ventured to the Spa and gym, what a lovely

and much needed moment. That moment of pampering brought the heat back into the body and we were ready for our High Tea at The Palace.

High Tea turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. The spread of food and desserts was all a girl with a sweet tooth could ask for. It was a combination of a beautiful set up, the girls really showing up looking like the queens that they are, yummy food, exotic teas and easily flowing and engaging conversations. We overstayed and were the last ones to leave.

Our table was the only table left while the staff bustled around us preparing for dinner. The conversations carried on over dinner. I would take these girls anywhere. Thank you Sun City for coming to the party with this wonderful Ladies Tees and High Tea trip. n

Double Delight for Browne in SA Disabled Open

MIke Browne slept on the lead for two nights and on Wednesday, the Englishman finished the job – winning the 21st Canon SA Disabled Golf Open in wire-to-wire style for a second successive year at Magalies Park.

Browne opened the tournament with a two-under-par 70 to share the first round lead with fellow leg-amputee Geoff Nicholas, but Browne left the Australian world-beater behind on day two.

A second round 76 moved the defending champion to two-over-par 146 and he started the final round two shots clear of Nicholas and 10 ahead of South African Les Autres pair Charl Theron and two-time former champion Iglin Grobbelaar.

Browne and Nicholas were evenly matched over the first nine holes, but the 41-year-old former Royal Artillery gunner shifted into high gear on the homeward loop.

He racked up three gains and drained a final birdie putt at the closing hole for a 74 and an 11 shot victory on four-over-par 220.

“I am happy, really happy with the way I bounced back after a truly awful start,” said Brown.

“It all went according to plan in the first round, but the second round was really tough with tucked pins and slippery greens. Then it went sideways this morning. I dropped at five and six and tripled seven and I could just see it all going the wrong way for me.

“You just have to dig in. I started with two straight pars and then I sunk a nice putt for birdie at 12 and I felt that the tide might turn. I hit two great shots into the par five (13) and made the birdie putt and got another one in the hole at 15, but gave it straight back at 16.”

Browne’s birdie putt at 17 pulled up just short, but he hit a good drive down 18 and pitched his approach 20 foot pin high left of the back flag.

“I had a similar length putt last year and it went the distance and lipped out. I’d been leaving putts short all day, so this time I gave it some good pace and it was the

best feeling when the birdie putt dropped.“Sometimes I forget that it’s only been about five years

since I started playing golf. Coming back here this year reminded me how much I’ve matured as a golfer in the last year. I’m really proud to be a double winner and to claim some important world ranking points.

“I definitely hope I can come back next year to hunt for a hat-trick of titles. I just love it here. With all the different disability divisions competing in this event, Magalies Park is such a perfect venue and the hospitality is out of this

world.“The course is perfect for this championship; not

too long, but a real test. It doesn’t benefit the long drivers, because the greens and the hazards is its defence, so it comes down to skill, short game and course management.”

Nicholas turned five-over and dropped another four shots in the first five holes on the back nine, but he rammed home a brilliant birdie at 17. Unfortunately he ended up in the trees with his

approach into the final hole.Showing off the skills that netted him 13

British and United States Amputee Opens, the 57-year-old got on the dance floor, lagged a 60-footer to give and tapped in to seal second with a final round 83.

Four-time World One-Arm champion Reinard Schuhknecht led the local challenge. The 28-year-old Heron Banks golfer carded rounds of 80 and 77 and closing 77 lifted him to third on 234.

Theron finished three strokes back in fourth and Grobbelaar rounded out the top five on 243.

Graeme Mazur and Ian Mortimer Jones added to the English celebrations with a one and three finish in the Overall Stableford Division.

Mazur carded rounds of 31, 34 and 28 to win on 93 points, edging out fellow Les Autres golfer Shelvin Kraemer from South African by two points. Jones took third on 89 points, while South African Visually Impaired duo Leon Strydom and Johan Kotze shared fourth 76 points.

Charles Williams made a welcome return to the winner’s circle in the Deaf Championship.

The 2017 champion triumphed on 251 with rounds of 86, 82 and 83, denying fellow First Swing Program coach Daren Hanekom back-to-back wins.

And KwaZulu-Natal junior Sandile Shange – making his second appearance in flagship event – led from start to finish in the Deaf Overall Stableford Division. Shange won by six on 88 points with rounds of 31, 32 and 25. n

News from womeNs Golf sA

The Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA) squad system seeks to grow and develop players who have the potential to go on to play for South Africa on the international stage. For some years the three tier Squad system has proven to be a successful roadmap. It all starts with the Talent Identification Squad (TID) and thereafter players who show potential have the opportunity to be invited into the B Squad and the Elite Squad.

On an annual basis and in consultation with the WGSA National Coaches and the Union Presidents, WGSA extends invitations to the selected players to the three Squads. During the year WGSA may move players between Squads depending on performance, commitment and other factors that WGSA may consider from time to time, and may also invite additional players to join a Squad.

This month we profile the TID Squad. It is the ‘incubator’ squad with the players usually aged between 12 – 16 years. The purpose of TID Squad is to: • identify young female golfers who show a

potential to excel in the game of golf, and• introduce these players to a holistic Long-Term

Athlete Development Programme for them to embrace and use as a platform to grow in their golfing ability.

In extending an invitation to join the TID Squad, the players and their parents are first appraised of the commitment required and thereafter they make the choice whether or not to accept the invitation and if so sign off on the following WGSA expectations:• attend the TID Camps held during the year,• prepare a Tournament Schedule for the year,

together with a prioritisation of the tournaments, so that they can plan and balance golf and school commitments,

• between camps, to work on the drills, advice given by the WGSA National Coaches and lessons learnt at the TID Camps (including nutrition and fitness), and

• play in their Club competitions and especially their Club Championships (if possible).

This year there are seven girls in the TID Squad and they are attending three camps staggered during the year run by our National Coaches, Val Holland and Anna Becker-Frankel. The TID camps are essential for laying the foundation of the WGSA ethic as well as giving focused attention to providing advice and guiding the girls on areas such as nutrition, fitness,

WGSA Talent Identification

Squad

performance assessment and also how to better prepare themselves for tournament golf. The first camp was held in April and as the year progresses our national coaches and WGSA will be able to measure the growth of the players.

At the camps each day starts with a fitness session. Our national coaches take the players through an age appropriate exercise routine and show the girls how to develop their golf fitness and stamina without having to necessarily be a member of a gym. This is vitally important as the players do not often have access to gym facilities whilst travelling or alternatively with a busy school schedule need to be able to give attention to their fitness whilst still meeting their school commitments.

Nutrition plays a vital part in any athletes’ ability to perform. Therefore, at the camps players are provided with information on how to ‘eat for success’ with information on the appropriate nutrition for both physical and mental performance whilst on and off the fairways.

From a technical perspective, the players spend time on the range and short game practice areas honing the drills and going through a series of tests. The Peltz short game tests is one of these and reveals better ways for golfers to practice and play. In fact for any golfer wanting to improve their short game the Peltz tests are a fantastic tool. For the TID Squad members, the results show the areas they need to work on plus they learn effective practice and can measure themselves between the camps through such tools.

When possible at the camps, the players also get to hear from a playing professional. This is very valuable giving them insight and mentoring them as to what is involved and how to realize their dream of becoming professionals in the future.

Whilst the players work very hard at the camps, to add some fun competition each day finishes with ‘Mangkamp’ activities where the players are paired up and points awarded. There is always great anticipation at the conclusion of the camp as to who the winners are.

As a member of the TID Squad, WGSA provides financial assistance towards Entry Fees and Travel costs for the players to compete in Provincial Championships (Open Amateur and Junior).

Whilst budgets are limited, this financial assistance together with assistance (where possible) from a player’s Union goes a long way towards providing the players with the opportunity to gain tournament

experience. WGSA is very grateful to the Unions for their support, as well as the many families who provide hosted accommodation for these and other players so that costs can be reduced.

Golf is an individual sport, and whilst the Squad players are fiercely competitive on the course, one of the more subtle successes of the squad structure is the “team” ethos. Even at the TID Squad level, they grow as a unit and together with the friendships that are formed become a foundation for future successes.

The TID Squad has proven to be a solid foundation in

the WGSA Squad structure, with many of the current B and Elite Squad players having started their journey to the international arena in the TID squad. However, this journey requires hard work and cannot be achieved alone. As they say, “Hard Work Beats Talent When Talent Doesn’t Work Hard.”

“WGSA greatly appreciates the effort from all those involved in nurturing and growing our young players towards realising their dream to play for South Africa - and go on to successful professional careers in the game or golf industry” said WGSA President, Sally Greasley. n

Athlone Golf Club

Athlone Golf Club was chosen by Durban Region Ladies Golf Association to host the 2019 edition of their Championship. This was based at Windsor Park Golf course on the 26th May 2019, being the first time, in many years, that this competition has been held on a municipal course.

Athlone Golf Club was established in 1933 and is situated on Windsor Park Golf Course in Durban. Windsor Park Golf Course is extremely challenging, therefore careful course management is required to keep your score down. The course is very well laid out, next to the Umgeni River, with plenty of trees and water to keep you focused!

Athlone in the past had a large ladies section but membership had dwindled to 13 in 2016. Over the past two years, the ladies section has grown to 42 members, including a developing Juniors’ section. The course was in excellent condition for the ladies competition, thanks to Leitch Landscapes, headed by Elliot Nkosi, who went the extra

mile to ensure the course was in competition standard. With A & B divisions playing 36 holes, C division and Seniors playing 18 holes, there were 158 rounds of golf played on the day.

Most of us have played Dominoes or have seen people stack thou-sands of Dominoes and then just topple the first one and the chain reaction flow down the line mesmerises us till the last one topples over. The amazing thing is the time and effort put in to set the whole thing up and in a matter of seconds you have to start again.

In Golf we see many people spending lots of time working on their swings and on various aspects of the game and when they go to the course just one thing can start a domino effect to self-destruction.

Here are a few examples and a few fixes. The dreaded Shank raised its ugly head on many unsuspecting vic-tims. It just suddenly rises up and slaps you in the face when you least expecting it. You can be chipping beautiful little chips onto the practice green, hitting a few cool flop shots over the bunker to a tight pin feeling like Mickelson. Then when faced with a similar chip on the second hole over a bunker from a marginal lie to a tight pin the Domino effect kicks in.

The first domino could be worrying over the outcome or lack there of. The mind gets in the way and you say to yourself don’t leave it short or make sure you get it on the green. This then dominoes into uncertainty and maybe even fear. This then leads to the legs getting wobbly and then they will not work and this potentially leads to a Shank.

So to help prevent the dreaded Shank try to stick to the basics of the swing and also be as relaxed as you can be. Try not to be too outcome orientated and stick to the process and let everything flow.

Another shot where the domino effect comes in is when faced with a long Putt. Three putt comes to the mind of most players. I think because many players only hit ten to fifteen footers on the practice green, when faced with a fifty footer the mind starts to get in the way.

The first Domino could be the fact that they are so far from the hole. The thought process then shifts to don’t leave it short and the golfer either leaves it short or hits it ten feet past.

A great way to deal with long putts is to really focus on the speed of the putt and again not be too outcome orientated. The line of the putt is relevant but not as important as the pace of the putt. Trusting your feel and judgement is crucial and also spending time on the put-ting green hitting fifty or sixty footers. Once you have hit a few then you will start to trust your judgement and then be able to take that to the course and actually look forward to hitting a long putt and not worry about the potential three putt.

So when playing your next game try and recognise the dominoes in your game and don’t let them cause the game to fall to pieces. n

RULES QUIZ

ANSWERSQuestion 1: CExplanation: As the player's action was not for the purpose of testing the putting green, there is no penalty for testing under Rule 13.1e (see Interpretation 13.1e/1).

Question 2: BExplanation: See the definition of Loose Impediments.

Question 3: BExplanation: If the Committee provides players with scorecards containing their handicaps, each player must make sure that the right handicap is shown on his or her scorecard before returning it. If such a scorecard mistakenly has a player’s handicap being higher than it actually is, and this affects the number of strokes he or she gets, the player is disqualified under Rule 3.3b(4) if this mistake is not corrected before

returning the scorecard. (Interpretation 3.3b(4)/2)

Question 4: AExplanation: The permissions for practising in Rule 5.5b override the prohibitions in Rule 5.2b in that a player is allowed to practise on or near the putting green of the hole just completed even if he or she will play that hole again on the same day. See Rule 5.5b and Interpretation 5.2b/2.

Question 5: AExplanation: See Interpretation 3.3b/2.

Question 6: CExplanation: If a conforming club is damaged during a round, it is treated as conforming for the rest of the round (Rule 4.1a(2)). But, as the club was damaged

by a person other than the player or his caddie, the player may replace the damaged club (Rule 4.1b(3)).

Question 7: CExplanation: A player must not make a practice stroke during the play of a hole (Rule 5.5a).

More on Confidence

Dr Deon van Zyl is a Clinical Psychologist and former Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria. He’s been working in the field of Golf Psychology since the early 1980’s, and assisted many of our top golfers and teams. This month he deals with confidence.

His e-mail address is [email protected]

On the 3rd of February this year, Dustin John-son won his first European Tour tournament at the Saudi International with a spectacular per-formance. Even though he won there, he still didn’t feel completely confident with his game. On Monday the 18th of February, just before

the World Golf Championship in Mexico, ac-cording to Johnson he “...talked to Butchie [his swing coach Butch Harmon] about what I was feeling…and I worked on it and it clicked.” He cruised to victory with 5 shots over Rory Mcll-roy. “This gives me a lot of confidence for the

rest of the year,” he said.In her rookie season in 2015 on the

LPGA Tour, Ariya Jutanugarn missed 10 consec-utive cuts, and in January 2016 started working with coach Gary Gilchrist after missing another cut followed by a 75th place. “She had lost a lot

of confidence and was not enjoying playing and competing,” Gary told LPGA.com. “I started by encourag-ing her because I could see that she was very talented, but was lost and had very little belief in her game…her self-talk was negative…” said Gilchrist. They worked on her swing and her mental confidence together, and in June 2017 Jutanugarn reached the no. 1 spot in the world ranking.

Good coaching and good tech-nique breeds confidence, but good coaches also install confidence into players as part of their coaching.

Confidence is simply the belief in your ability to be successful, and can be summarized in two short phrases: “I will” and “I can”.

One of the best ways to give your-self a feeling of “I will” is to set chal-lenging but realistic and achievable goals. Goals build positive expecta-tions, prepare you to act and take charge, and create laser-like focus. So, what do you want to achieve with your game? By when? How are you going to get there? What is the next step? What have you done today to-wards that goal?

Gary Player always had a plaque on his desk with the following in-scription: “I CAN’T”, but the “T” was crossed out. He always was, and still is, a living example of confidence in action. One of the best ways to give yourself a feeling of “I can” is to dis-cover a simple swing thought or cue that works for you and that you de-velop during repetitive practice, or with your professional coach. In last month’s edition we explored this topic.

Another way to give yourself a feel-ing of confidence is to remind your-self of past successes, good shots, good rounds or good tournaments. In his first US Open win in 2001, Retief Goosen constantly reminded himself during the 18-hole playoff against Brooks of all his Alfred Dun-hill match-play wins. During his 2004 US Open win, he constantly said to himself during the last round: “I’ve done it before, I can do it again”. Just before hitting the winning 5-iron shot to the 17th in the 1994 US Open, Er-nie Els thought back to a great 5-iron shot that he played previously.

Thinking back to past success sets up a feeling of it’s possible, of “I can”. The average golfer might say: “But I haven’t had any success in the past to think back to, to give me confi-dence”. “What comes first, success or confidence?” l would remind you that you have hit many good shots and had many good holes in your life to remember. Even a beginner hits good shots here and there. So, make mental notes of your good shots. Have a long memory for success, and a short memory for failure.

As the great Jack Nicklaus always maintained: “Confidence is the most important single factor in this game.” n
