The goals include an ambitious target: the elimination of hunger and poverty worldwide by 2030. But that elusive goal can be reached only if the United Nations can help garner – both from the public and private sector – a staggering 3.5 to 5.0 trillion dollars per year. Addressing the 193-member General Assembly in September, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked: “Why is it easier to find money to destroy people and planet than it is to protect them?” He rightly pointed out that the world continues to squander trillions in wasteful military spending.    Kazakh President Urges One Percent of Arms Budget for Development Agenda

NEW YORK (IDN) - The UN’s post-2015 development agenda, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is desperately in need of funds for its successful implementation.

79-Nation ACP Group Set to Become a Global Player BERLIN | BRUSSELS (IDN) - The 79-nation group of Afrian, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries is determined to become a global player within and outside the United Nations system and at the same time bring the Brussels-based Secretariat closer to the seven ACP regions by participating in regional summits, on-going discussions within the group reveal. The consultations under way indicate that while 2015 promises to go down as a landmark year in the history of the group that is characterised by a multitude of diverse and yet identical interests, ACP countries have set ambitious goals for 2016. This is underlined also by reflections commemorating the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Georgetown Agreement – which established the ACP Group – and the United Nations’ 70th anniversary. The discussions have been set forth at the ACP Council of Ministers that concluded its 102nd session on November 25, 2015. Read more...

Most Vulnerable Countries Assured of Fresh Money at Climate Conference

BERLIN | PARIS (IDN) - The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Chairperson Naoko Ishii has welcomed pledges made at the UN Climate Conference in Paris to inject more than 252 million U.S. dollars to help the most vulnerable countries address climate change and its adverse consequences. In an unprecedented move, Premier Philippe Couillard of Québec, Canada's largest province by area and its second-largest administrative division, has announced a contribution of 6 million Canadian dollars to the climate fund, hosted by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the most vulnerable countries. The commitment, made at the Paris COP21 climate talks, is the first-ever by a sub-national government, and brings total new financing to the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) to more than 252 million U.S. dollars. Using Global Citizenship Education for Sustainable Development

PARIS (IDN) - Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in September, global citizenship education has been receiving increased attention for the role it can play in both sustainable development and in keeping youth from joining the ranks of “violent extremists”. He told IDN in an interview that it was important for children who are in school to learn about respect for all and to have the opportunity to think about values such as “solidarity and cooperation”. Nuclear-Weapons-Free Africa Keen To Harness Atomic Energy

HARARE (IDN) - Nuclear disarmament is a non-issue in Southern Africa, because no African country possesses nuclear weapons. In fact the 38-nation African Nuclear Weapon Free Zone (ANWFZ) Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Pelindaba, signed in 1996, established a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Africa. The treaty came into effect on July 15, 2009. According to experts, rather than focussing on nuclear

weapons, energy should be expended on seeing how the region may utilise nuclear power amidst rampant electricity deficits that have seen most of the countries in the region thrown in incessant darkness. Read more... FAO Provides Critical Assistance in Northeast Nigeria

CHIBOK (IDN) - Repeated attacks on civilians from Boko Haram have led to massive displacements and negatively impacted livelihoods in North Eastern Nigeria. Displaced people rely on the limited resources of their host communities, placing the most vulnerable households under extreme pressure. The assistance was very critical, as many farmers facing critical levels of insecurity, had left their villages just before the 2014 harvest. Reverend Titus Pona, Head of the Good Way Mission, one of FAO's implementing partners in Borno State, adds on the

context of the intervention in Chibok: “People have been suffering a lot here.” Read more...
