UNCW Head Coach Buzz Peterson Robert “Buzz” Peterson continues to rebuild the UNCW program after fi nishing the regular season in the Colonial Athletic Association higher than expected in his fi rst three years at the helm. Peterson, who has piloted four different teams to fi ve post-season tournament appear-ances during his career, owns a 33-59 record at UNCW in three campaigns in Wilmington. He has coached the Seahawks to 13-18, 10-21 and 10-21 records during his time in the Port City. The 2012-13 team went 9-5 at home and won the Wilmington Division of the Nations of Coaches Classic. Led by First-Team All-CAA performer Keith Rendleman, the Seahawks also

knocked off CAA front-runner Northeastern in a mid-February home-coming game at Trask Coliseum. Prior to taking over at UNCW, Peterson led Appalachian State to the semifi nals of the 2010 Col-legeInsider.com Tournament, guiding the Moun-taineers to a 24-13 overall record and the SoCon North Division title. He stands 258-206 (.556) in 15 seasons as a head coach. Peterson, 50, left the college game in 2007 to become Director of Player Personnel for the Na-tional Basketball Association’s Charlotte Bobcats, but returned in the fall of 2009 to ASU, where he began his career at Appalachian in 1996-97. In his fi rst stint in Boone, Peterson led the Moun-taineers to a 79-39 record in four seasons, includ-ing a 47-12 mark in Southern Conference play. His .669 overall winning percentage and .797 winning percentage are both tops among ASU coaches in the program’s history. Peterson was named SoCon Coach-of-the-Year in 1998 and 2000 and led ASU to three 20-win campaigns. Following the 1999-00 campaign, Peterson took over at Tulsa, where he led the Golden Hurricane to a 26-11 record and the 2001 National Invitation Tournament championship. Tulsa defeated Mem-phis, 72-64, in the semifi nals at Madison Square Garden and then cruised past Alabama, 79-60. Peterson’s success at ASU and Tulsa landed

him the Tennessee job in 2001-02 and he spent four seasons in Knoxville. He compiled a 61-59 record with the Volun-teers, collecting two NIT berths. In 2005-06, Peterson moved on to Coastal Carolina and piloted the Chanticleers to a 35-25 mark in two seasons. CCU registered its fi rst 20-win season in 13 years in 2005-06 when the Chants went 20-10 before losing to Winthrop in the Big South Conference championship game. Peterson then joined the Bobcats and worked closely with former Head Coach Larry Brown as the organization’s top talent evaluator for the 2009 NBA Draft. Before his fi rst stint at ASU, Peterson spent nine seasons as an assistant coach, with stints at Appalachian State (1987-89), East Tennessee State (1989-90), N.C. State (1990-93) and Vanderbilt (1993-96). The teams that he served as an assistant coach for racked up four post-season appearances, including two NCAA berths and two NIT bids, and went a combined 154-117. Before entering the coaching ranks, Peterson enjoyed an outstanding playing career at UNC Chapel Hill. He played four seasons for legendary head coach Dean Smith from 1981-85 and helped lead the Tar Heels to a 115-22 record and four Atlantic Coast Conference championships. He was a member of the 1982 national championship team, where he played with future NBA stars Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins. As a player in high school, Peterson was a Parade and McDonald’s All-American at Asheville High School in Asheville, N.C.

FIRST HALF DELUGE The Seahawks reached their season high for fi rst-half scoring with a 44-point outburst in the opening 20 minutes vs. Wingate. UNCW shot 50 percent from the fl oor and 10 different players scored before intermis-sion.

FAST FREDDIE After struggling in the fi rst three games of the sea-son, junior guard Freddie Jackson got untracked in Saturday’s win over Wingate. The Wilmington product had scored a total of four points through the fi rst three games on 3-of-20 from the fl oor, but made 3-of-4 fi eld goals and a triple on Saturday en route to 10 points.

THE NORTH FORTY The Seahawks put up “40” in two key categories in the win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. UNCW scored 40 points in the paint and had 40 points off the bench in the dominating performance against Wingate.

MORE ON CED By holding Wingate to 28.4 percent shooting, the Seahawks posted their second best defensive perfor-mance in Buzz Peterson’s four seasons, second only to a 26.2 percent night by Drexel on Feb. 15, 2011.

BIG BEN Newcomer Ben Eblen has only scored 14 points in four games, but he’s helping the team in other ways. In addition to running the club, he has collected 14 rebounds and 14 assists for the Seahawks.

LOCKED IN Cedrick Williams has converted 24-of-37 fi eld goal attempts for 64.9 percent of his tries. The rest of the team is 70-of-237 for 29.5 percent. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., product is the only player to reach double fi gures in all four outings.

ROAD HISTORY The Seahawks suffered through their worst road record in history last season with a 1-15 mark away from home. UNCW also fashioned one-win seasons away from Trask Coliseum in 2006-07 (1-13) and 2008-09 (1-14).

ROLLER COASTER SEASON The UNCW men’s basketball team experienced a topsy turvy 2012-13 campaign that saw the Seahawks capture the Wilmington Division of the Nations of Coaches Classic, upset CAA frontrunner Northeastern during Homecoming at Trask Coliseum, struggle on the road and witness senior forward Keith Rendleman becoming the school’s all-time leading rebounder and one of the greatest players in Colonial Athletic Associa-tion hoops history.

UNCW HOOPS HISTORY UNCW is completing its 62nd season of intercol-legiate hoops and 37th season of NCAA Division I hoops. The Seahawks joined the D-I level in 1976-77 and became a member of the Colonial Athletic Associa-tion in 1984-85. UNCW owns an 863-806 (.517) overall record in 62 seasons and a 556-522 (.515) ledger in 37 years of D-I play.

POST-SEASON SUCCESS The Seahawks have appeared in four NCAA Tour-naments and two NIT tourneys. UNCW won the CAA Championship in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2006 to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament and was awarded an NIT invite in 1998 and 2001. UNCW recorded the biggest win in the school’s history on Mar. 14, 2002, when the Seahawks upset fi fth-seeded Southern Cal, 93-89, in overtime at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

SEAHAWKS PICKED EIGHTH IN CAA UNCW was selected by the league’s coaches, SID’s and news media to fi nish eighth in the CAA’s nine-team regular season race during the conference’s annual Media Day on Oct. 22, 2013, in Baltimore, Md.
