TYPES OF MISSIONS Of the 268 missions since 1993, flooding has been the leading cause of UNDAC deployment (76 missions). There have also been 31 disaster response preparedness missions, including three in 2016 (Guinea, Namibia and Vanuatu). Since 1993, there have been 1,513 deployments of UNDAC members on missions in 108 countries. The 2004/2005 period was the busiest in UNDAC’s history, recording the most emergencies (31 in total) in a two year period, and the largest single emergency by staff deployed (the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami).

In 2016, UNDAC’s second-largest deployment was for Hurricane Matthew with a combined 24 deployments (35 including support staff) in Haiti, Bahamas and Jamaica. By length of deployment, the longest mission in 2016 was the Ecuador earthquake with a combined total of 288 days of deployment by UNDAC members, followed by Haiti (Hurricane Matthew response) with 250 days .
