NOVEMBER 27, 2017:Defender Luis “Peewee” Ortega hammered home the golden goal after a give-and-go with midfielder Miguel Vaca to complete Chicago’s comeback in overtime.Chicago remained the only unbeaten team in the league after overcoming a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter en route to a 6-5 win against St. Louis at the Sears Centre Arena.Following a 4-3 Ambush lead at the break, the Mustangs were held scoreless in the third frame, before falling behind 5-3 after a midfielder Carlos Contreras finish with 13 minutes, 40 seconds left. The resilient Mustangs applied pressure to the Ambush before finding their first goal of the half, when keeper Jesus Flores fed forward Osvaldo Rojas on the left wing, he spun and scored with less than four minutes re-maining.Chicago amped its push to extend the game by moving to six attackers with 1:55 to go. It took just 11 seconds for it to work as Peewee’s blast forced a rebound that forward Taylor Bond finished with his head for his 10th goal of the year. This setup a second-straight win in overtime at home by the Mustangs, on Peewee’s finish. The Mustangs (4-0) opened their scoring account on the day with 10:37 remaining in the first quarter, one second into the power play, as midfielder Rodrigo Flores sent a screaming pass to the back post for midfielder Miguel Vaca to finish. It was Vaca’s second goal of the season. After the Ambush (0-4) answered with back-to-back goals, defender Edwin Rojas kept Chicago in the game with two clutch plays.First, he won the ball with a slide tackle and fed Bond.Peewee beat two defenders with tight, quick touches on the right wing wall, before dishing to E. Rojas off the back wall for another goal to make it 3-3.The Mustangs are off to their first 4-0 start since the PASL championship season in 2013-14. The Mustangs have a one and a half game lead in the Central Division.

NOVEMBER 26, 2017:Forward Taylor Bond continued his scintillating start to the season with a hat trick to lead Chicago to a 7-4 win against St. Louis.Bond, who leads the Mustangs (3-0) with eight goals, scored with 6 minutes, 58 seconds left in the first quar-ter to regain the lead at 3-2 after trailing by 1. Out of the break, the Ambush (0-3) knotted the game at 3-3 on midfielder Carlos Contrerea’s first of two goals. Before three unanswered goals from the Mustangs, including defender Ephraim Beard’s first of the campaign on a shot just inside the third line.Following handball out of the box from Ambush keeper Casey Clark, Efrain “Wilo” Martinez just missed on the penalty shot. Bond couldn’t be denied on the power play, as he converted a feed from midfielder Miguel Vaca to make it 5-3.Midfielder Francisco “Paco” Gonzalez scored the next goal with 7:10 left, to put the game away. This was Paco’s first appearance of the season.Bond scored again to complete the hat trick on an empty net as the Ambush played with six field players as it attempted to rally.Chicago couldn’t have gotten off to a better start in the game, as defender Edwin Rojas’ give-and-go with Vaca led to a goal less than 40 seconds into the game for his first of the season.Forward Osvaldo Rojas got on the scoresheet for his fifth goal of the year, which is second best on the team. Forward Rodrigo Flores made his debut for the Mustangs. With the performance, Chicago is off to its first 3-0 start since 2013.

The Chicago Wolves gave up two power-play goals as the Manitoba Moose edged the club 2-1 on Sunday after-noon at Allstate Arena. In his second game as a forward, Scooter Vaughan nabbed his first point of the season with a second-period goal. Goaltender Jordan Binnington (5-5-1) turned aside 26 shots as the Wolves’ four-game home winning streak came to a close.

“The effort was there,” said Wolves head coach Craig Berube. “But for me, it was the execution. It just wasn’t there. We had the puck a lot, particularly in the first period, and just didn’t get a whole lot done with it.”

Manitoba (9-7-1-1) opened scoring just 3:07 into the first frame when Rolling Meadows native Dan DeSalvo net-ted his fifth marker of the season.

The Wolves (8-9-1-1) managed to outshoot the Moose, 12-10, through the first period but could not get one past their former Calder Cup-winning netminder Ondrej Pavelec (4-2-1).

Late in the session, J.C. Lipon escaped the Wolves defensemen for a breakaway chance, but Binnington stood tall to keep the score just a one-goal lead in favor of Manitoba.

The Wolves knotted the game, 1-1, at 16:44 of the middle stanza when Vaughan rushed up the right-wing boards and lasered a shot past Pavelec off the far-side post and in.

However, in the final minute of play in the frame, Jack Roslovic tallied the go-ahead marker to put the Moose up 2-1 heading into the third period and the marker stood as the game-winner.

The Wolves are back in action on Wednesday (Nov. 30) at Allstate Arena to face the Pacific Division’s Texas Stars for the first time this season. For a complete 2016-17 game schedule or ticket information, visit ChicagoWolves.com.

The wait is over. After seven postseasons of futility, the Seattle Sounders have finally made MLS Cup in their unlikeliest playoff run yet.

A 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids in the second leg of the Western Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon was more than enough to secure a 3-1 aggregate goals victory and send a team that had been written off by most pundits in late July to their first title game in the MLS era.

Seattle will still have to wait a few more days to see who they will play and whether they will host the match on Dec. 10 (8 pm ET; FOX and UniMás; TSN and RDS in Canada), a right which is granted to the team with the highest regular-season point total.

If Toronto FC (53 regular season points) are able to turn around their series with the Montreal Impact (45 regular season points) – the Impact currently lead 3-2 on aggregate – at BMO Field on Wednesday night (7 pm ET; FS1 and FOX Deportes in USA; TSN1 and RDS in Canada), the title game will head to Toronto. If Montreal are able to hold out, Seattle (48 regular season points) would host them at CenturyLink Field.

The Sounders, who joined MLS in 2009, have qualified for every postseason since joining the league and reached the Conference Championship stage twice, in 2012 and again in 2014 after they won the Supporters’ Shield. They lost both series to the LA Galaxy, who went on to win MLS Cup in both of those years.

The opportunity to contest their first MLS Cup will surely be among the biggest moments in Sounders team history, but a win in the title game would be far from the first trophy they have collected as an MLS team. In addition to their 2014 Supporters’ Shield triumph, Seattle captured the US Open Cup in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014.

With the win over Colorado, Seattle also kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2017-’18 CONCACAF Champions League. They will need to win the MLS Cup title to earn the last remain-

ing place for US-based teams in next year’s tournament, which would otherwise go to New York City FC as the remaining eligible, non-qualified team with the highest regular-season points total in 2016.

Rajon Rondo praises Rick Carlisle as his relationship with Fred Hoiberg blooms

7

Fred Hoiberg shared that Rick Carlisle told him over the summer that Carlisle believed the Bulls coach and Rajon Rondo have perfect personalities for each other. Unsurprisingly, Rondo said he didn’t hear about the words from his former coach with the Mavericks. The Bulls guard rarely has concerned himself with outside opinion, matters out of his control.Hoiberg wants his point guard to play instinctively, to read the defense and get the offense organized. Carlisle,

with whom Rondo clashed in 2015 over style of play in Dallas, prefers to call more set plays. Carlisle benched Rondo during the 2015 postseason and Rondo eventually left the Mavericks during their first-round series against the Rockets under the public position of a back injury. Nevertheless, Rondo praised Carlisle in an interview with the Tribune.“He’s a champion,” Rondo said. “You can’t take that from me. You can’t take that from him. It just didn’t work out, that two champions couldn’t figure it out. “I have a lot of respect for Rick. Just because things don’t go well doesn’t mean you hate a person or that the media perception is right. Rick and I had a good relationship in the beginning. We tried to work it out. I worked with him every day on my shot. We watched film together. Not every marriage works. It was a learn-ing process.”

Different coaching styles work for different teams and players. Carlisle guided the Mavericks to the 2011 title and won Coach of the Year honors in 2002 with the Pistons. Hoiberg, who played for Carlisle when he was a Pacers assistant and respects him immensely, is off to a strong start after an underwhelming rookie NBA coaching season. The Bulls face Carlisle and the Mavericks on Saturday in Dallas, the second game in the Bulls’ only four-games-in-five-nights stretch of the season. The stretch, which also features Wednesday’s home game against the Lakers after the Bulls took the weekend off, continues Rondo’s blossoming relationship with Hoiberg. That started during the free-agent recruiting pro-cess when Hoiberg said the words Rondo liked to hear.“He came to me and said he likes his point guard to run the show,” Rondo said. “Every situation is different. Fred does have more of a laid-back personality. He doesn’t micromanage as much as some coaches do in the league. For me, that’s big. “But you can’t come in right away and run the show. Everything takes time. (The team is) making progress. I have no complaints. We’re No. 2 in the East right now. What’s to complain about?” The Mavericks acquired Rondo from the Celtics in a December 2014 blockbuster trade. After a brief honeymoon, Rondo and Carlisle engaged in a shouting match during a February 2015 victory over the Raptors. Their styles continued to clash. “People said I intentionally walked the ball up, (taking the maximum) eight seconds (to cross half-court). That’s not me. I’ve never done that in my career,” Rondo said. “We started halfway during the season and expectations were extremely high. We jumped in. The (February) situation happened dur-ing the season. We tried to get it to work. It didn’t. The rest is history.” Much of that history has been summarized negatively. Rondo hasn’t addressed it much, but he ran over and shook Carlisle’s hand and those of the entire Mavericks’ staff before a Kings-Mavericks game last season. And Carlisle has been complimentary of Rondo’s post-Dallas play. ”I kind of laid low after the situation. I didn’t want to get involved with it. People wrote what they wanted to write,” Rondo said. “But I developed one of my closest friends in life there in Monta Ellis. I don’t look at (Dallas) as a negative situation. It just didn’t work out on the court for our personalities and the team concept.” Does Rondo regret laying low? “No,” he said. “That’s who I am.” And that personality is meshing thus far with Hoiberg and the Bulls.

Hall of Fame boxing trainer Cus D’Amato put it best when he said, “People who are born round don’t die square.” So it should have come as no surprise that when Kyle Noke announced his retirement from mixed martial arts on Saturday night, it came with no over the top fanfare, no neon signs saying, “Look at me, look at me.”Instead, the 36-year-old native of Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia simply sent out a Tweet.“Thank you to the @ufc and all the fans. It’s time to hang up the gloves. Ive had a blessed life doing what I love. I Wouldn’t change a thing”That’s quintessential Kyle Noke, never looking for attention, but always carrying himself like a humble martial artist whose goals in the sport didn’t involve fame or glory. Yet after a 14-year pro career that saw him compile a 22-10-1 re-cord, he got both. More importantly, he opened the door for Australian mixed martial artists at a time when there were precious few Aussies competing in the UFC.Yet after a stint on season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter, which came seven years into his pro career, the former security officer for the late “Crocodile Hunter,” Steve Irwin, got his shot in the big show in June of 2010. He never left, compet-ing 12 times for the promotion, the last bout coming on Saturday in Melbourne, where he lost a unanimous decision to Omari Akhmedov. It wasn’t the way Noke wanted to go out, but no fighter worth his salt intends on leaving the sport with a loss. Instead, the longtime middleweight and welterweight standout can focus on the winning times in the Octagon, where he

defeated the likes of Chris Camozzi, Charlie Brenneman and Peter Sobotta, picked up a pair of post-fight bonuses, and also coached his home country against Canada on The Ultimate Fighter Nations. And it was that representation of Australia and his pioneering efforts “Down Under” that will be Noke’s lasting legacy, if the responses from his fellow Aussie fighters on Twitter are any indica-tion. Anthony Perosh, Elvis Sinosic and Bec Rawlings all chimed in on Noke’s retirement last night, with “Rowdy” Bec capturing his impact best.

Conor McGregor has vacated his featherweight title, ending his time as a two-division champion, UFC has con-firmed.

The Irishman won the title when he knocked out Jose Aldo at UFC 194 in December 2015 but has never defended the belt. The move means Aldo reclaims the title – he had previously threatened to leave UFC after he failed to land a rematch with McGregor. McGregor remains the lightweight title holder, after beating Eddie Alvarez in New York earlier this month. McGregor had spoken of his desire to keep hold of both belts. Last week his agent, Audie Attar, was asked if his client would fight any attempt to take one of his titles. “He’s a businessman, so he is going to make business decisions,” Attar said. “No matter what happens, nobody will ever be able to take those belts away from him. Nobody has beat him for those belts. So the way I look at it is, whatever business decision Conor decides to make, it’s a smart one. We have proven that to date. If a belt is taken or what have you, it’s figurative. He still keeps that win. Nobody beat him to dethrone him.

The UFC president, Dana White, says McGregor is unlikely to fight before May 2017, with his partner, Dee Devlin, expected to give birth to their first child early next year. “He’s good. He should take time off,” White said. “He has been fighting nonstop. Nothing wrong with him taking time off. It’s good for him and [Devlin], and it’s good for the baby.”

The Bears were on the cusp of completing the greatest fourth-quarter comeback in their 96-year history Sunday against the Titans. But they dropped the ball, literally and figuratively.Making his first NFL start, Matt Barkley rebounded from two red-zone interceptions to throw his second and third touchdown passes of the game in the final 8:23 as the Bears trimmed Tennessee’s lead from 27-7 to 27-21 with 3:06 to play. After the defense forced a punt, Barkley com-pleted passes of 14, 21 and 23 yards to Marquess Wilson, enabling the Bears to reach the Titans’ 7 with :47 remaining. On first-and-goal, a wide open Joshua Bellamy dropped a sure touchdown pass from Barkley in the end zone. After two incompletions, a sliding Deonte Thompson dropped a well-thrown Bar-kley pass in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-goal with :29 to play, enabling the Titans to escape with a 27-21 victory at Soldier Field.Though the pass to Bellamy was much easier to catch than the one to Thompson—who had a defender draped on his back—both receivers later conceded that they should have made the plays. Bears receivers combined to drop 8-10 passes in the game, with Wilson, receiver Cameron Meredith and running back Jordan Howard also contributing to that total.“There were a lot of different guys out there that haven’t been in the position to catch or drop balls very many times,” said coach John Fox. “I know one of the guys in there, Marquess Wilson, was playing only his second game this season. Those guys fought hard. They did a lot of good things. There were some good catches as well as drops. So just like anytime, if the result isn’t exactly what you were looking for, you go back to the drawing board and you learn from it.”Subbing for the injured Jay Cutler, Barkley completed 28 of 54 passes for 316 yards with three TDs, two intercep-tions and a 72.8 passer rating. Without all the drops, Barkley’s stats obviously would have been much better--and the Bears probably would have erased a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win a game for the first time ever.“It was a tough day for our group,” Thompson said. “But we’re just going to keep battling and keep fighting and keep coming every day with our ‘A’ game.”“We were moving the ball,” Meredith said. “I don’t think they could cover us. I just think it was a matter of us making the plays. So we’re disappointed in ourselves and we hold ourselves accountable.”Barkley was sharp early, throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Daniel Brown to give the Bears a 7-0 lead on their second possession of the game. It was Barkley’s first NFL TD pass and Brown’s first NFL TD reception. The Bears were 3-of-3 on third down on the drive with Barkley completing 3-of-3 passes for 48 yards, including the TD.The Titans (6-6) then stormed back, scoring on five of six possessions to take a commanding 27-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. Derrick Henry had an 11-yard TD run late in the first quarter, and Marcus Mariota threw second-quarter touchdown passes of 4 yards to Delanie Walker and 29 yards to Rishard Matthews to give Tennessee a 21-7 halftime lead. The Bears opened the second half by recovering a surprise onside kick. Connor Barth’s kick caromed off Titans linebacker Nate Palmer and was covered by Adrian Amos at the Chicago 43.The Bears reached the Tennessee 5. But on third-and-goal, Barkley’s ill-advised pass intended for Meredith was intercepted by safety Da’Norris Searcy in the end zone. Barkley had also been picked off by linebacker Wesley Woodyard inside the Titans’ 20 in the first half.Ryan Succop’s field goals of 19 and 31 yards widened the margin to 27-7 before Barkley heated up. The Bears quarterback capped drives of 75 and 69 yards with TD passes of 8 yards to Wilson and 6 yards to Thompson, respectively, to draw the Bears to within 27-21.But they failed to make one more play they needed in the final seconds to avoid falling to 2-9, their worst 11-game start since they were 1-10 in 1997.

Palmeiras volvió a gritar campeón, 22 años después.

With her professional debut safely out of the way, Katie Taylor can now set her sights on the considerably more challenging tests to come. The 30-year-old breezed to victory in her bow against Karina Kopinska on Saturday night in what was a clear success for her personal brand as well as women’s boxing, but there remain a series of questions for her to answer in her bid to propel the sport into the mainstream.“You have to impress on your pro debut and you have to get everyone talking,” she said. She certainly did impress, dramatically stopping Kopinska shortly into the third round at the SSE Arena, but it was clear that Kopinska was boxing at a level far below the woman from Bray who went un-beaten for more than a decade as an amateur.

Indeed, it seems that Taylor’s biggest challenge on her quest to lead women’s boxing into a new era will be finding the competition needed to make the fights interesting. This was as good a start as she could have hoped for, though, and she will be hoping for a similarly dominant performance when she fights again next month.“I have always wanted to be a history maker and break down barriers,” she said. “I think I have done that in amateur boxing and I think I have the platform to do it in the pro ranks as well.”

Taylor’s performance was the perfect demonstration of her abilities, and one which delighted pro-moter Eddie Hearn.
