By this point in the school year, the novelty of resuming classes and school activities has probably worn off, even for grade 9s. We have been back at it for more than the twenty-one days that experts say it takes to establish a habit, so I hope many of the key routines are in place.

It seems to have been an orderly opening month. Classrooms are productive and busy, and extra-curricular activities are well underway. Teachers report that our newest students, particularly those in grade nine, have been quick to settle in. One key aim of our Link Crew program is to help ease students into a new learning community. We welcome feedback from both students and their parents regarding how that transition into high school has gone.

Speaking of feedback, the upcoming Student Progress Conferences provide an important opportunity for teachers to connect with parents and share early impressions of how individual students are doing. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find the instructions for scheduling interviews on October 15th (evening) or 16th (afternoon). We encourage parents to bring their sons or daughters and learn about their achievement and behaviour in classes. Teachers may be able to share some specific evidence of achievement, but the 5-minute meetings are too brief to provide much more than a snapshot of the student’s progress. The interviews are intended to be early enough so that students can act upon the feedback and make any necessary adjustments before grades are assigned and report cards are issued.

We hope your fall has gone well, and we look forward to the important conversations about student progress that will happen at the mid-October conferences, and throughout the entire year.

MECHANICS REPAIR SHOP

We are looking for auto mechanic jobs as learning opportunities for our willing and able mechanics 20 and 30 students. Parts are significantly discounted, and labour is free, although it takes more time to repair things than it would in a regular auto shop. Oil changes, tire repairs, antifreeze or oil leaks, electrical problems, brakes, vibrations, and check engine lights are the kinds of work they can do. If you are interested in having a vehicle worked on, please contact Mr. Rob Fenske, Auto Mechanics Teacher, Walter Murray Collegiate. Email [email protected] or call and leave a message at 306-683-8221, ext. 2874.

You are invited to Walter Murray Collegiate’s REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICES

The staff and students of Walter Murray Collegiate would like to invite parents and members of our community to our REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICES on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 held at Walter Murray Collegiate. Special Parking is available for veterans and seniors. There will be two services. The first service will be held at 10:00 a.m. and the second service at 11:20 a.m. Please RSVP to Mrs. Matieshen by phoning (306) 683-7850 before November 5 to indicate how many seats and parking stalls you will need reserved. If you know a veteran or senior, please share this information with them.

The Walter Murray “Electric Flyers Club” is BACK for 2015-2016

The Electric Flyers Club is intended for any student that is interested in flying or learning to fly radio control model airplanes indoors. Come see what flying is all about!

If you are enrolled in the AVIATION STUDIES 20/30 PROGRAM or you are interested in enrolling, this is the club for you! We have time booked in the gym at Walter Murray Collegiate.

Walter Murray and the AVIATION STUDIES PROGRAM have formed a community link with Hub City Radio Control Club. Members from this club will be there to demonstrate their airplanes and skills to those students who want to learn. They will be able to offer hints, tips, and instruction on both flying and building your own flying contraptions.

You can bring your own if you already have one. You can build your own if you want one that is unique. You can purchase Almost Ready to Fly (ARTFs) or Ready to Fly (RTF) kits. Saskatoon’s NEWEST HOBBY STORE ~ Express Hobbies at 411 34th Street East (306) 954-3434 can supply all your needs and gives discounts for Aviation Studies students.

The Aviation Studies Program has “Nimbus” electric airplanes for students to learn how to fly. This is an excellent trainer. They are light, slow, and fairly manoeuvrable. Indoor Electric Flying encompasses the very latest in lightweight aircraft design with radio electronics and electric battery technology.

As a member of this club, you will be asked to fundraise for projects and supplies; but It’ll be fun stuff.

The whole purpose of the club is to get students interested in flying and having fun! Flying is the main feature on flight nights with activities that would include spot landing contests; flying the limbo; “aircraft carrier” landings, etc.; and yes, mid-air crashes do occur. Sometimes they are spectacular! So you may have to find out how to rebuild them.

Flight Nights are at Walter Murray, all on Mondays beginning @ 9:00 p.m. in the Boys’ Gym. Dates in 2015 are: October 19, November 2, November 16, November 30 and December 14. Dates in 2016 are: January 11, January 25, February 8, February 22, March 7, March 21, and April 4.

See Mr. Armstrong in Room 231 to sign up today!

Take Our Kids to Work Program: Wednesday, November 4, 2015

On November 4, Grade 9 students will not be coming to school, but they will be experiencing the ‘Real World of Work’. Each Grade 9 student at Walter Murray has received information and consent forms from their Health and Career Teacher. Parents at the Grade Nine Parent Orientation Night would have become aware of the program. If the parent does not work or his or her work site is unsuitable, then we would ask you to contact a friend or close relative, and have your son or daughter accompany that person to work. If you know someone who works in an industry that is of particular interest to your son or daughter, you may ask that person if he or she would accommodate your child.

When the Grade 9 student arrives at the work site, it is very important to adequately orientate him/her to the security and health and safety issues relevant to the work area and the tasks that he/she will be performing. Each student also receives a one-hour safety presentation from their health and career teacher in the upcoming weeks. Your job as a parent is to be sure that the consent forms are signed and returned immediately to their Health and Career teacher. No student will be allowed to work without this step being completed. Even if the student does not have a work site, the consent form must be completed.

If you would be willing to accommodate enthusiastic students other than just your son or daughter, we would be thrilled to hear from you. There are always a few students who have difficulty finding a work placement to suit them. We are aiming for 100% of our grade 9 student population to be at work on November 4. We appreciate your support of your child’s career adventure.

See Your Future

See Your Future – Education & Career Fair is once again pleased to present our 18th annual event in Saskatchewan. The education and career fair will be held in Saskatoon on Monday, November 2, 2015 at TCU Place.

See Your Future – Education & Career Fair is the premier event in Saskatchewan that makes significant connections between post-secondary institutions and secondary students in our province. At this event students can explore educational opportunities, examine career paths, and plan vocational goals. We host over 120 exhibitors from organizations across Canada, the USA, and overseas.

The event is presented in a high quality trade show approach with interactive display booths. The universities, colleges, and organizations with in-house training bring expertise and innovation in a variety of fields. Students are provided with in-depth information in the form of literature, technological demonstrations, seminar presentations, and one-on-one consultations. For more information, see Mr. Lundgren in room 123.

Spotlight on Careers

This event is primarily for youth in grades 11 and 12. They will experience both industrial and educational opportunities in a field that is of interest to them. Youth visit various job sites and post-secondary institutions, giving them a glimpse into requirements of specific careers. More than 75 careers are highlighted. The spotlight focus for semester 1 will be the following: aviation, automotive, culinary arts, emergency services, entrepreneurship and business, media and technology, medical diagnostics, nursing, police and fire and protective services, veterinary, and veterinary technology.

The Junior Achievement program gives you the opportunity to start your own business with other students around the city. You will be working with real prod-ucts and real money. Don’t miss out on the chance to meet new people, build lifelong skills and even earn an Entrepreneurship 30 credit. The benefits of the program are endless, such as: traveling opportunities, local business discounts, and meeting some of the wealthiest CEO’s. Please visit Mr. Lundgren in Room 123 for information.

Music Department

CHOIR: Welcome new and old grade 9 to 12 choir members. We have begun singing tests Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch and students sign up in a group of four for a five- minute time slot. There are around 57 members, so class time is best used as rehearsal time and testing will take place once every three weeks (Driver Ed. students see me at break).

All students have been sized for a short-sleeved black shirt that will be worn along with black from the waist down for the Remembrance Day Services in the Girls’ gym on November 10. Parents are welcome to attend. Please bring $20 cash or cheque made out to Walter Murray Collegiate for your choir shirt, as it was not included in your school fee.

Our first concert is Monday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Girls’ Gym; it will take place with the Grade 9 to 12 concert and jazz bands. Warm up is 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

A big thanks to our accompanist, Dennis Lee, who will be integral to our concert planning, tour, and performances, throughout the year.

Interested choir students may still audition for Vocal Jazz that will meet every Monday from 3:25 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. starting in October. The student run Show Choir auditions will take place before Semester 2. Don’t forget that many students will be part of the November musical The Little Mermaid Jr. Keep your eyes open for a suitable concert singing review (due December 1).

Our choir tour destination is Idaho, U.S.A (Students will need a passport). We will continue to fundraise with QSP magazines, Lamontagne orders, Co-Op gift certificates and poinsettias, and Broadway Ice-Cream. We will keep track of individual accounts. Sectionals throughout the year will be during class time. New members are still welcome. See Mrs. Pittman in Room 126.

BAND: Welcome to the Walter Murray Band Program!

We are back in full swing with fundraisers and upcoming events. Our first fundraisers is Co-op gift certificates and QSP magazine subscriptions were a great success; thanks to all those who contributed. Any funds raised go directly toward offsetting the cost of each individual’s tour. The second fundraiser is gifts and chocolates through Lamontagne; orders are due October 19. The third

fundraiser will begin in November for poinsettias – orders will be due in early December.

Smart Music Codes and instructions have been distributed to the Grade 9 and 10 students for use on home computers. Please ensure you install this practice tool and have access to an internal microphone or purchase an external mic (around $10 at any electronics store). There are tests that can be attempted multiple times and sent from home and it enables practicing full ensemble literature with accompaniment. Grade 11/12 students can purchase an optional subsidized subscription for $30 from Mrs. Pittman.

Practice records for grade 10 are due on the first band class of every month, and students are expected to practice 120 minutes per week and submit it with a parent signature for verification.

The Jazz bands have an excellent opportunity to work with a couple of amazing musicians at the university on Friday, November 27. The grade 9 jazz band will need to be dropped off at the education building at 8:30 a.m. and carpooled back to Walter Murray at 10:30 a.m. If anyone can help with driving, please email me at [email protected]. The Senior Jazz members need to arrive at 10:15 and will be done at noon.

Grade 9 and 11 students and new students have been sized for a uniform/shirt. Payment was included in the school fees (unless you are new to grade 10 or 12, or need a larger size). Fees must be paid before the first concert in order to receive the shirt.

The first concert is Monday, November 2, followed by a holiday concert on Monday, December 7 in the Girls’ Gym. Please ensure your child has black pants/skirt, socks, and shoes.

Paid specialists for sectionals have been organized for Grade 9 on Monday, October 26 from 3:40 to 4:40 p.m. and for Grade 10 on Monday, October 19 after school as well. Some instruments like bassoon, oboe, violin, French horn, and string basses will have a sectional during class time due to the private teachers’ schedules.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Pittman or Ms. Mortenson-Spokes.

Link Crew

Remember your first day of high school? Was it awkward, uncomfortable, even a little scary? We’ve all been there. Well, those days are gone at Walter Murray. Thanks to a new program called Link Crew, grade nines’ first day of school is now a structured Orientation Day filled with welcoming activities, relationship building, and positive energy.

Link Crew is a program that creates a crew of grade nines who are paired with a Link Leader in grade 11 or 12. These Link Leaders spend time

getting to know their crew through a structured set of activities that are designed to build community and offer grade nines a sense of belonging right from day one. Then, as the school year moves into October, Link Crew continues its work through social follow-ups, academic follow-ups, and other leader-initiated contacts. The structured nature of the Link Crew program builds and develops the leadership skills of the student leaders such that the program is actually students helping students

succeed.

As the first high school in Saskatchewan to have Link Crew, Walter Murray is uniquely positioned to offer a program that develops student leadership skills at the same time as creating a safe and welcoming environment for its newest Marauders. For more information about Link Crew, please contact Link Coordinators Tracy Laverty ([email protected]) or Travis Myrol ([email protected]).

More than 250 Grade 9 students are welcomed to Walter Murray by Link Crew Leaders at a special Orientation the day before classes began.

WMCI PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A SAFE PLACE

Dan Worden was a broadcaster for CKOM Radio in the 1950s and 60s. During his time on air, he was known for reporting in the field as part of CKOM on the Spot Mobile Broadcasting. Some of his antics, which have been documented in the records of the Saskatoon Public Library, include driving a tractor down 2nd Avenue, and frying eggs on the sidewalk outside of the CKOM offices in the Empire Hotel. He became known as “radio man, reporter and raconteur extraordinaire”.

Dan Worden was dedicated to community service in Saskatoon. In 1961, he received the Award of Merit – a life time achievement award for his contributions to Saskatoon.

Dan Worden passed away in October 1964. The following summer, a newly developed district park in the Nutana Suburban Centre was official dedicated as Dan Worden Park by

Saskatoon City Council.

Dan Worden Park is classified as a district park and does not receive dedicated funding from the City of Saskatoon. Since its completion in 1965, Dan Worden Park has become overgrown, and is in need of improvements. Due to the overgrowth, the park has become a refuge for illegitimate activity that reflects poorly on the neighbourhood and larger community.

In 2012, students and teachers from Walter Murray Collegiate and Holy Cross High School came together to develop a plan to improve the park. With support from the City of Saskatoon and Councillor Loewen, students have undertaken public consultations, design charrettes, user surveys, and engaged the senior citizens living near the park. Extensive brush clearing and tree trimming have also

been conducted. This planning and engagement work was used to develop a new concept plan for the park.

Currently, our senior welding class is working with City of Saskatoon architects to design and build new benches and garbage cans for the park area. A Grade 10 science class is preparing a plan for a community garden and flower bed. We continue to work as a school to change the culture and perceptions of the park area for the better. If you would like to know more information about our efforts, or are willing to assist, please contact Karen Peterson, Vice Principal, at Walter Murray Collegiate at 306-683-7850 or [email protected].
