The Purpose.
To identify that challenging young customers for I.D leads to violence and abuse to Retail Staff.
What impact does the abuse have on their confidence?
Are these incidents reported to the Police?
• (38%) indicated that they were verbally abuse at least once a month.
• 55,000 shop workers are verbally abused at least every week, just for asking for ID.
• Male shop workers were more likely to receive verbal abuse at least once a month.
• Shop workers in the 35 – 44 age group, more often than other age groups.
Verbal Abuse
• Only a quarter (26%) of retailers who have experienced verbal or physical abuse when asking for ID have reported the incidents to police.
• 57% either did not receive a response, or were unsatisfied with the response they received
• Just 18% think enough is being done to protect them against the threat of violence
• 16% of the country’s retailers are still to undertake Challenge 25 Training
• 33% of Asian or Asian British workers saying they are typically verbally threatened or abused on a weekly basis, compared 7% of White or
White Irish workers

Asian or Asian British shop workers were almost twice more likely to get verbal abuse at least once a month than White or White Irish shop workers were (56.33% vs 31.02%), with Asian shop workers almost three times more likely to receive verbal abuse at
• Almost a third of staff said that verbal, physical or racial abuse had made
them less confident about challenging for ID (28.44%). Attacks had a
marginally bigger effect on the confidence of women (29.86%) versus men
(27.78%).
• The 25 – 34 age group reported the highest knock on confidence in
challenging for ID (38.98%) and it is worth noting that it is this age group
that is most likely to suffer verbal, physical or racial abuse from customers
when asking for ID.

• To increase engagement with the Police and encourage shop workers to be more
proactive, encourage reporting of incidents
