unVeiLings Beginnings

It’s been over 10 years since Banyan Tree first opened in Seychelles in 2002, marking a major milestone as the first Banyan Tree resort to open outside of Asia. I still remember vividly how I first stepped foot on the island and fell in love with its rich history and incredible landscape, and decided that it was a perfect destination for Banyan Tree to flourish. This summer, we are proud to unveil a new and refreshed look for Banyan Tree Seychelles which still retains its old world colonial charm from a bygone era.

On the subject of new unveilings, our first integrated resort in Central Vietnam officially opened its doors to the world in April 2013. Set in the tranquil south central coast of Vietnam, Laguna Lăng Cô is blessed with a stunning mountain backdrop and framed by a beachfront stretching over 3.5km long - making it one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Laguna Lăng Cô is also in close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Hue, Hoi An and My Son. This enables us to offer a wide range of beach, land and sea activities as well as unique cultural excursions for both leisure and corporate guests.

This April also saw Banyan Tree Tianjin Riverside welcoming its first guests. By the end of this year we will have two new hot spring resorts in China, where we continue to expand rapidly with over 20 more hotels to open by 2015.

Angsana Tengchong • Hot Spring Village will feature 28 Hot Spring Retreats and nine villas, each with private hot spring tubs. Nestled in a valley near the western edge of the Yunnan province and home to one of China’s most famous volcanic mountainous region, the resort features a spacious Angsana Spa and an array of 43 outdoor and indoor hot spring pools with six different themes containing various minerals with therapeutic benefits.

On the other hand, Banyan Tree Chongqing Beibei will feature 107 suites and villas with private hot spring pools and is located in the Beibei region that boasts of over 60 scenic spots and 104 cultural relic attractions. Natural geothermal waters are channelled from the North Hot Springs into these pools, giving guests the option to soak in the comfort and privacy of their own villas. For those wanting to get up close and personal with nature, outdoor hot spring pools are also available.

their daily business; fishing boats, docked in harbour, their catches of silver fish glinting as they are piled high at the local market; the impudent curves of the coco de mer shells; the tank-like carapaces of the giant tortoises… The list of sights that the islands are famous for goes on, and on. But while memories, and photographs, are definitely something visitors

will be taking away with them, a host of native and European artists are doing their best to bring what the tourists see to life in their work, creating something exceptional that will bring a vivid slice of the Seychelles back to their homes. The history of art on the Seychelles goes back

several centuries; one of the first known canvases was painted by a freed slave, Billy King, to depict his capture on the African continent, and ‘forced exile’ to the islands.

The Passions of Island Living Nature, open spaces and community are common themes in Seychellois art to this day. Local writers and poets have also used the magnificent backdrop of the Seychelles as the inspiration for historical accounts, fascinating works documenting the social history of the islands and its people, and collections of short stories and poems that evoke the passions of island living.

More recently, cultural expression depicts Seychelles’ struggle, portraying popular aspirations for liberty, equality and unity. These egalitarian notions are the cornerstones of the Seychelles’ contemporary political process, and cultural expression is actively encouraged and supported by the Government. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the local art scene has been burgeoning, and the Seychelles has produced

Heaven exists, and it’s a place on earth. Situated over 1,448 km east of mainland Africa, scattered like jewels over the Indian Ocean, the 115 lush, green islands that comprise the Seychelles have been drawing visitors, tourists, and conquerors for the past 800 years. The earliest recorded sighting of the Seychelles by Europeans was in 1502, by the Portuguese explorer Admiral who passed through them and named them the Amirantes (‘islands of the Admiral’).

A transit point for trade between Africa and Asia, the islands were occasionally used by pirates until the French began to take control in 1756. The islands were given the name we know them by today by Vicomte Jean Moreau de Sechelles Louis XV's Minister of Finance. Many present-day Seychellois are descendants of Africans, who were brought here by slave-traders in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and as a result, strong elements of mainland African tradition – such as the local, rhythmic Sega dance can be distinguished in the culture. The Seychelles Kreol [Creole] language, or Kreol-Seselwa, is basically derived from French, combined with some African words.

Unique HeritageSquabbled over by France and Great Britain between 1794 and 1810, the abject poverty suffered by these slaves, and the constant struggles by French and British settlers to the island led to a mutual effort to improve their lives. This united stance provided fertile ground for the creation and development of a unique Seychellois heritage and culture. It has been an independent country since 1976, and today its laid back atmosphere, stunning scenery and friendly locals make it a prime destination for honeymooners and adventurous holidaymakers alike. And it contains some surprising attractions. For example, the Seychelles and compelling art are not necessarily words that the average visitor would put together before embarking on a trip to these alluring islands.

In fact, the average visitor would expect to be bowled over purely by what he sees in front of his eyes: the lush landscape, lined with palm trees, coconut groves and bright, exotic plants

and flowers; the shimmering, turquoise ocean, sunlight dancing off it like diamonds; the intensely colourful clothes of the inhabitants as they go about

The 115 island archipelago is renowned for its natural beauty, but a collection of celebrated artists is bringing its stunning landscapes to life…

several artists of international repute. Since the country’s independence in 1976, contemporary artists have trained in universities and art colleges all over the world, bringing back with them a variety of different styles, and working with a range of materials.

Cultural Life in the Islands A National Art Gallery was inaugurated in 1994, in the capital, Victoria, on the main island of Mahé. The majority of the most exciting artists have studios, and their work shown in galleries, on Mahé itself. Visitors who have a few days to spend on this, the archipelago’s largest island, should consider doing an artists’ trail, meandering gently through the villages and towns, looking out for signposts indicating a gallery or artist’s home or studio, and spending time absorbing the artworks within. So, who are the ones to watch out for?

Firstly, there is Seychelles-born Nigel Henri. Henri did his degree in art and graphic design at the University of Sussex in the UK, and returned to his homeland in the early 1990s, subsequently taking up a position as a graphic design teacher at the Seychelles National College of the Arts, then at

the Seychelles Ministry of Culture and Information.Working mainly in acrylic paints, he produces big, bright canvases which depict cultural life in the islands – locals jostling in front of stalls on market day, lively gatherings of groups of friends and underwater scenes.

His work is colourful – using splashes of bright pink, yellow, blue – and bold, evocative of the community feel that resonates throughout the islands. His studio is in the village of Beau Vallon, on the northwest coast of Mahé, and his works are displayed at a handful of galleries throughout the Seychelles, such as the Gallerie Passerose on Praslin. One of the pillars of the Seychelles art community, Henri is the founder of the Association for Visual Arts (AVA) and co-founder of CENAC, which are both NGOs set up to promote art in Seychelles.

Londoner Tom Bowers trained in sculpture, is known throughout the islands – and beyond for his beautiful, serene bronze pieces. Bowers' artistic career included a stint studying photography, followed by work in the advertising industry, though he kept up with sculpture throughout. A family holiday to the Seychelles in 1981, where he fell in love with the country’s natural beauty, prompted him to move there

permanently five years later and sculpt full time. His simple but elegant figures capture the essence of the islanders he encounters every day – at work, fishing, or playing. His studio is situated in the picturesque bay of Anse de la Mouche, on Mahé.

Another Brit, Andrew Gee, trained at St Martin’s College of Art in London in fashion and textiles, and to this day works in silks, as well as with acrylics. His watercolours capture beautiful, vibrant panoramic beach landscapes, as well as kaleidoscopically coloured fish and underwater life. Gee came to the Seychelles in 1993 as a fashion and textile instructor at the School of Art and Design, and developed a fascination with the local culture and heritage. Based in Baie Lazare, on Mahé, he also runs a well appointed guest house, Maison Soleil.

Not far from Gee in Baie Lazare is based Italian-born sculptor Antonio Filippin, whose complex carvings are works of art made of coral and wood, intended to express his philosophy of the harmony of life. He likes to use natural materials found in his adopted homeland to bring his dreamlike visions to life.

Finally, the iconic paintings of Mahé born George Camille represent perhaps the best, and strongest, portrayals of Seychelles life. From watercolours to acrylic collages, and work in embossed copper and mixed media, his faux naif but evocative and lively depictions of everyday pastimes, local landmarks, and even elegant nudes, would grace any living room wall. His main studio, Sunstroke, can be found in Victoria, and some of his works are also displayed in the villas at Banyan Tree Seychelles.

The art alone would be reason enough to visit the Seychelles, but the islands are regularly developing new ways to ensure that guests can enjoy the local culture and heritage, from the

Colonial architecture to the spicy Creole cuisine. Don’t miss the Kreol Festival, held in October, perhaps the biggest and most important event in the Seychelles cultural calendar. It offers a fascinating week full of sounds, smells, flavours and colours of Creole culture. Creole cuisine, for example, owes much to the spices and ingredients of India and the Orient. Ginger, coconut, chillies and potatoes are widely used in sauces and curries.

The Annual Seychelles International Carnival of Victoria is held every April, to celebrate the diversity and multi-culturalism of the islands. Representatives from the world’s most famous carnivals take part in a three day parade of floats and activities. Nature lovers should not miss a stroll around the Vallee de Mai, a UNESCO Heritage Site and 3.6 square meters of palm forest which has existed since prehistoric times.

There you will find the iconic coco de mer palm trees, shaped comically like a pair of female buttocks, and a renowned symbol of the islands around the world; so much so, that it is even what appears on their passport stamp. And you must take a trip to the stunning nature reserve island of Curieuse, which is populated by the friendly and endearing giant tortoises.

One of the best places to base yourself for an all encompassing trip to this beautiful part of the world is Banyan Tree Seychelles. Located on the picturesque south-western coastline of Mahé, it boasts 60 exquisite Creole style villas (featuring the art of the aforementioned George Camille).

The hotel also uses the best of Creole/Seychellois architecture: plantation decor with high sloping ceilings, airy verandahs, louvered doors and ethnic woven textiles. With the enthusiastic staff ready to organise whatever you want, the Seychelles is, essentially your canvas – and your incredible experiences will help to colour it in.

Nestled amongst the palm trees of scenic Intendance Bay, Banyan Tree Seychelles exudes a sophisticated old-world charm. Located on the main island of Mahé, this bay side all-pool villa resort is a 30-minute drive from Seychelles International Airport. Flaunting striking turquoise waters, a powder sand beach and French Creole architecture, the plantation-style estate is an inviting retreat for leisure-seekers.

The atmosphere-charged resort underwent an extensive renovation recently and unveiled the tasteful enhancements in the summer of 2013. Public areas were redesigned, villa exteriors were updated with a fresh colour palette and

the interiors were refurnished and refreshed. Resort restaurants were given new flavour with contemporary furniture and décor revamps.

A barefoot chic ambience echoes through Banyan Tree Seychelles. From its culturally relevant architecture and décor to its surrounding languid landscape, the elegant resort is a depiction of holiday bliss.

Built in the style of French Creole plantation houses, villas feature pitched ceilings, airy verandas and louvered doors, conveying a sense of heritage with modern sensibility. All six villa types are restful sanctuaries and possess resort-living essentials such a private pool, sheltered pavilions, stylish dark timber furnishings, crisp white linens and local objets d’art.

Recreational and leisure activities are essential features of every enjoyable vacation. Banyan Tree Seychelles’ all-encompassing catalogue of on-resort diversions serves to interest and entertain. Sociable guests who like to mingle can head to the resort’s infinity pool, state-of-the-art gym or beat the resort’s pro at a game of tennis. Nimble-footed guests with an affinity for adventure can take nature walks, go fishing, kayaking or head to the beach for a game of soccer.

There are myriad amusements for the less athletic too. Participation in a cookery class led by Saffron’s Thai chefs will reap mouthwatering results. Capturing the tranquillity of the resort’s wetlands on canvas is recommended for guests with an artistic touch. A movie night at Au Jardin d’Epices serves up dinner with a show.

More far-flung locales showcase the stunning terrestrial and marine biodiversity of the Seychelles islands. The following excursions are worthwhile daytrips.

The Morne Seychellois National Park situated high in the mountains of Mahé and vaunts historical significance with the ruins of a school built in 1875 and terrestrial wonders such as Morne Seychellois, the islands tallest peak. An ecosystem of diverse proportions can also be discovered in the variety of habitats afforded by distinct environments.

The largest coral atoll in the world, the Aladabra Atoll is 1,110 km southwest of Mahé. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the nature preserve exhibits over 152,000 giant tortoises and is the world’s only habitat for the coconut crab and the Aladabra rail.

Guests might experience fatigue after the activity-induced adrenaline rush and a rejuvenating spa therapy is the remedy. Replete with eight Spa Pavilions, Banyan Tree Spa Seychelles transports you to a realm of absolute relaxation. Guests can indulge in sublime

Due to Asia’s robust economic growth, emerging MICE industry trends have indicated Asia as the MICE hotspot for years to come. Other important industry trends point to an increase in demand for innovative events, fresh experiences, alternatives to traditional boardroom-style event spaces and high-tech presentation and entertainment facilities.

With the Group’s presence in 18 countries in Asia and its wealth of MICE experience, it is no wonder that most of its properties are coveted MICE or special event destinations.

Here is a taster of a few recent events that showcase the creativity, originality and planning expertise that complement every unique Banyan Tree event.

Banyan Tree Touch

Banyan Tree BangkokAn oasis amidst Bangkok’s metropolitan buzz, Banyan Tree Bangkok offers panoramic vistas of the capital’s cityscapes and a Sanctuary for the Senses. A popular MICE destination, the urban resort recently created and organised a customised full-day itinerary for 60 guests from a consumer goods firm based in the United States.

Following a morning session meeting at the Banyan I conference room, the guests adjourned to Taihei for a sumptuous Japanese lunch. Located on the 53rd floor of the resort, Taihei serves mouth-watering Japanese delicacies such as sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki with breathtaking views. Next, a fun-filled team building session was held at the nearby Lumpini Park, fostering team bonding and positive communication. The intrepid guests were whisked back to the resort by Tuk-Tuk, an exhilarating experience that is quintessentially Bangkok. Sunset cocktails were hosted at the rooftop alfresco Moon Bar where drinks and conversations flowed freely. Dinner was served aboard Banyan Tree Bangkok’s teak wood vessel, Aspara. The guests were treated to an ambrosial meal of royal Thai cuisine as they cruised down the glistening Chao Phraya River.

Angsana Hangzhou Set in tranquil Xixi Wetland National Park, Banyan Tree and Angsana Hangzhou are located in Zhejiang Province, China. Exuding an ambience of serenity and chinois chic, the resorts are sought-after corporate event destinations. Held at both resorts, the Terumo BCT (Asia Pacific) Ltd event is a fine illustration of the resorts’ event organising finesse.

Fulfilling the meeting and leisure requirements directed by the client, the resorts successfully hosted Terumo BCT (Asia Pacific) Ltd guests for 5 days, catering to their meeting and entertainment needs.

Commencing with welcome cocktails at Angsana Hangzhou’s rooftop poolside, guests moved on to a gala dinner in the lobby. In the following days, the group utilised all the well-appointed meeting facilities in both Banyan Tree and Angsana Hangzhou. Pleasant luncheons were enjoyed at the Waterlight Court, featuring flavourful international favourites and local specialties.

The highlight of the event was teambuilding sessions conducted at the Banyan Tree Hangzhou Wetland Gardens, a non-traditional event space that inspires and motivates. A “living water park”, the wetlands are home to a nature sanctuary, historical sites, literary residences, and religious retreats.

Banyan Tree UngasanThe Banyan Tree brand is synonymous with extraordinary destination weddings. Perched on the weathered cliffs of Bali’s southernmost peninsula, Banyan Tree Ungasan’s magnificent Indian Ocean panoramas, spectacular sunsets and elegant villas make it a much-loved venue for a beautiful wedding.

Held late last year, the Vaswani and Bharwani Wedding is a glowing testament to the skill and flair of the resort’s associates and event planning staff. Over the course of 3 nights, 300 guests were feted and entertained successfully. The resort’s flexibility and meticulous planning prevailed over complicated layout arrangements and logistical hurdles to deliver a memorable matrimonial celebration.

Banyan Tree MacauAn excellent example of impeccable coordination, the "Miss New York Chinese" Welcome Poolside Party event at Banyan Tree Macau was a sensational crowd-pleaser. Located in electrifying Cotai city, the ultra-modern resort is a portrait of elegance and exclusivity.

The Banyan Tree Macau Cabana Pool was the centre stage of the festivities. An integral part in event set-up, expert coordination of various logistics, welcome cocktails and gala dinners, the resort’s event planners ensured that the pageant was a splendid and sublime affair.

Angsana Fuxian Lake Situated on the shores of China’s largest highland freshwater lake, Angsana Fuxian Lake is a fully integrated resort boasting extensive meeting and recreational facilities, numerous dining venues and magnificent lake and mountain views.

In April 2013, 730 China-based Oriflame sales agents arrived at Angsana Fuxian Lake for a corporate event. The event took place over 5 days and featured full-day meetings, team building exercises and a gala dinner. Complex setups, quick venue turnarounds and observing Muslim religious etiquette posed certain challenges, which were met with skill and dexterity. The resort’s event sales team and banquet division also worked hard throughout the event to satisfy any needs or requests from the client and guests.

An intimate corporate retreat, 10 participants stayed three nights, enjoying activities such as body weight workouts, body massages, jet ski rides, ATV expeditions, yoga and meditation sessions. Tasked with creating an inventive cooking class, the resort stepped up to the plate and developed an interesting experience for them.

Participants were instructed to compete in the collection of spices such as lime, basil, lemongrass and more from the resort’s spice garden. Next, they proceeded to the Treetops Restaurant where they learned to cook and plate their lunch under the supervision of chefs.

SIT DOWN WITH CHEf RENU

Inspired by her mother’s cooking, Chef Renu Homsombat, Saffron Corporate Chef and Thai Sous Chef at Banyan Tree Bangkok has been dishing up authentic and delicious Thai cuisine since childhood. She sits down with Under The Banyan Tree for this exclusive interview. We talk to Chef Renu about her passion of sharing beautiful contemporary Thai cuisine to the world at Saffron.

Can you share with us on what inspired you to join the culinary world? Have you always known that you would be a chef someday?

My inspiration comes from my family. I remember my mother cooking us meals almost every day from a very young age, and we never seemed to get bored of the taste of them even once. I always wondered why that is. Maybe it’s what they call “The Rhythm

of Life” - something that every Thai woman should own. And that’s what got me started. I always think that when I prepare a dish, I must put the very best in it. The best ingredients, the best preparation, and the very best of myself so that the diners can truly enjoy every dish that I create. Growing up, I never thought that one day I would become a chef, mainly due to the fact the I am a woman. I always thought that chefs

SIT DOWN WITH CHEF RENU

must be only men. But now I realise that nothing is out of our reach if we try hard enough and believe in ourselves.

Tell us a little about how it’s like to work in a kitchen; and your culinary journey the past couple of years?

Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to travel to many Saffron branches within the Banyan Tree group throughout the world. Each country offers new experiences and challenges for me. Some branches have very small kitchens while others have ones that are far too big. But that is not as important as the fact that I got to meet colleagues from different corners of the world who, like me, are working towards a common goal. I have learnt so much from each person I meet on my trips regardless of their position. I am very proud to be part of this team to introduce the world to authentic Thai cuisine.

We heard that you have had several opportunities to demonstrate your skills as a guest chef in hotel restaurants around the world. Where have you been and what do you like most about these trips?

This topic is one that I like to tell my colleagues and the associates I meet when I visit other Saffron branches to

motivate them. In the 10 years that I have been working at Banyan Tree, I have had the opportunity to travel and participate in shows in over 10 countries. These include not only Banyan Tree hotels but other renowned hotels and resorts. I have had the honour to act as an ambassador of Thai food with the Department of Thai Exports, and have visited countries such as China, Dubai, Germany, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Portugal, Seychelles and Vietnam. I have gained experience and knowledge from each and every one of my trips. I am particularly pleased that I have had the opportunity on countless occasions to work alongside 3 Michelin Star chefs. I learnt new techniques and methods that I have brought home to apply to Thai food at Saffron. This is the type of experience that I would like all Saffron chefs to have the opportunity to experience. This is one of the many things that Banyan Tree has given me, and I am very grateful for.

What are some of your favourite Thai dishes?

My favourite dishes are Som Tum (Papaya Salad), Phad Krapao Hmoo (Stir-fried Pork with Basil and Chilli), and Larb Phed (Minced Duck Salad, Chilli and Thai Herbs). I never get bored of these dishes. They are intensely flavourful, quite spicy and sour.

What are some of Thailand’s best kept secrets when it comes to cooking ingredients?

There are many wonderful aspects of Thai Cuisine. First of all, Thailand is abound with fresh herbs and spices. These are the heart of Thai food as they are the key ingredients of curry paste and the foundation for most Thai dishes. Coconut or coconut milk is also fundamental to the success of Thai cooking. We have great quality coconuts in Thailand with the perfect balance of sweetness and thickness. We use coconuts as key ingredients in many

dishes ranging from food to desserts. However, the thing that cannot be missed when talking about the key to the success of Thai Cuisine is the world renowned Jasmine Rice and Thai Ripe Mango.

Thailand is also famous for its cheap street food – what would you recommend first time tourists to try?

First and foremost, Phad Thai (Wok Tossed Noodles). Other must try dishes are Tom Yum Goong (Spicy Prawn and Lemongrass Soup), and Mango Sticky Rice. I recommend these three dishes because whenever I travel to other countries and taste the Thai food there, I feel that it’s these three dishes that are always best when in Thailand.

Apart from Thai food, what other types of cuisine do you like, and wish most to master?

I would love to be able to master the art of Chinese food. I am fascinated by the techniques they use to assemble each dish and the way they select the ingredients they use for cooking. They use only fresh ingredients and each dish has a story behind it. But most importantly for me, many Chinese dishes possess medical and healing qualities derived from the herbs and ingredients used, which I am very interested in.

What is the biggest compliment you have ever received from a guest?

I am very glad when I see that guests are enjoying the food I have prepared for them. When they say that the Thai food they have had at Saffron is the best, it really makes me feel happy with the work I have done. This motivates me to continue to pursue my journey in developing and spreading the art of Thai Cuisine.

Can you describe more about your role as Saffron’s Corporate Chef?

My role as Saffron’s Corporate Chef is to ensure that the food served at all branches of Saffron comply with the standards and do not stray from our Food Concept of providing authentic Thai flavours to guests throughout the world. With the assistance of Head Chefs from each branch, I develop new menus, or bring back ancient menus and train the kitchens on how to prepare them. I devise unique touch points, adjusting the recipe and presentation to ensure that

they possess Saffron’s identity. I also assist in the development of Thai Food promotions for each property in order to enhance guests’ dining experiences.

How is working at Banyan Tree Bangkok different from the other hotels or restaurants you have worked at?

I have been working for Banyan Tree for 10 years. I have become so at home here, it truly feels like my second home. The associates here are very kind and at ease with one another from the very first day. Unlike other restaurants and hotels I’ve worked at, Banyan Tree not only accommodates your well being but your entire family. This is the main difference I see. We also get the chance to develop

our skills through a refined training program with internal and external trainers. They encourage internal promotions more than the recruitment of qualified candidates, which gives us an opportunity to grow. This is why I feel this is my second home; I truly respect the values and conduct of this place.

What are the top 3 dishes guests should try at Saffron?

I would recommend guests to try the “Assorted Appetiser”, “Salmon Salad”, and “Chicken Green Curry”. These dishes are my favourite as I feel I have truly captured the essence of what Saffron stands for. The Assorted Appetiser is a compilation of Thai flavours combined in one dish. The Salmon Salad represents the coming together of Thai flavours, Thai herbs, and the delectable Salmon fish. The Green Curry represents the rhythm of Thai cooking. The curry paste is created with care by our chefs to reach the perfect balance of sweet and spice.

They say we should not trust a skinny chef. Tell us how do you keep slim and fit while cooking up such irresistible food all the time?

When cooking, we should always taste the food, but just taste. We should never eat too much until we are full. We should eat food that is beneficial

for us, avoiding breads, working out on a regular basis, don’t stress too much about work, and just enjoy life.

To wrap up, can you share a Thai recipe that the readers can easily replicate at home?

The Salmon Salad is an easy dish that I would recommend. The ingredients can be found no matter what country you are in and the dish is also rich in omega 3. Combine mint leaves, basil, finely sliced lemongrass, flaked pomelo, crushed chilli, crushed garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, and a pinch of sugar with grilled Salmon. Toss gently to avoid bruising the green vegetables and serve. The seasonings can be adjusted based on your personal preference. This is very simple and is a very refreshing and healthy dish.

A metropolis in Northern China and one of the four national cities, Tianjin is the third largest city in China in terms of its population. A convergence of past and present, Tianjin is divided into the old city and the Binhai New Area. Its rising importance as an economic and financial hub has prompted numerous Fortune 500 companies to establish in Binhai.

Approximately 600 years ago, Tianjin was nothing but sea. Over time, the floodings from the Yellow River washed in sand and eventually created a plain that was henceforth known as the city of Tianjin. A melting pot of cultures, the city was once shared by nine countries in total: America, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and Russia– this mix of history and heritage is evident in its picturesque European-style villas, historic bridges and magnificent churches, illuminating the city’s varied past.

Be impressed by the Huangyaguan Great Wall, a part of the Great Wall of China, passing through northern Tianjin. Built on a mountain ridge, the Wall is famed for its stunning views. Take a leisurely stroll along Jintang Bridge – connecting the Hebei district with the Nankai district, this bridge was built nearly a hundred years ago. For a bird’s eye view of the entire city, get onboard the Tianjin Eye, a 120-metre tall Ferris wheel overlooking the Hai River.

Welcoming you to this bustling city is Banyan Tree Tianjin Riverside. Newly opened with 159 upscale rooms and suites, the hotel provides easy access to the city’s historical and cultural sites. With a minimum size of 62 square metres per room, most of them feature a thoughtful Relaxation Tub for guests to enjoy a delightful soak after a long day out. Since 2009, the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm, Banyan Tree Global Foundation (BTGF) has spearheaded, strategised and coordinated efforts to enhance the environmental and social well-being of all stakeholders.

24-hour Diving EventTaking an active role in the protection and remediation of global ecosystems, Angsana Ihuru, Maldives organised a 24-hour diving event in its house reef in April 2013. In celebration of the 14th anniversary of the Rannamaari Wreck sinking and to raise awareness for reef and marine life conservation, the “10 to 10 Rannamaari Wreck” event was a huge success.

With shimmering waters so clear that visibility can stretch up to fifty metres, striking scenes of Rannamaari’s underwater world is a delight to observe by daylight and starlit night. 70 people representing 12 nationalities and underwater photojournalists participated in this unique tribute to the marine biodiversity of the Indian Ocean. Webcasted on angsana.com and Facebook, the wreck’s resident giant moray eels, scorpion fish, stingrays, groupers, batfish, squirrelfish, nurse sharks and fusilier fish were on full display.

5% of the costs of all dives were donated to the Banyan Tree Green Imperative Fund, supporting community and environmental projects around the world.

Kids CampEmpowering people through education and local projects, the Banyan Tree Management Academy (BTMA) is committed to the goals of Advancing People Development, Management Excellence and Learning with Integrity and Meaning. protection of endangered elephants from the threat of poaching and loss of habitat, the children sharpened their computer and presentation abilities, as well as animal conservation awareness. Participants aged 12 to 14 were presented with the theme, “CSR Harmony”. Tasked with designing simple webpages to promote corporate social responsibility, these older children were also taught personal values through interesting role-play activities.

The Group’s firm belief that it shares a responsibility to safeguard and enhance both natural and human environments continues to steer its numerous worldwide corporate social responsibility activities.

As a global hospitality brand operating in 14 destinations, the Banyan Group’s pledge to

Hailing from Southern Vietnam, 32-year old Oanh barely earns US$3 per day. Without a stable source of livelihood, she and her six-year old son live in a little bamboo shanty devoid of stable foundation and a sturdy roof. When rain comes, she has to seek shelter somewhere warm and dry or drape a raincoat over the bed and endure a damp dwelling throughout the night.

Because of these circumstances, Oanh aspires to find a stable job which will provide for a decent living and enable her to send her son to school. Then, Viet Artisans came into her life. Established by a group of artists who are passionate about celebrating the Vietnamese culture and way of life, Viet Artisans aims to sell meaningful handicrafts to tourists, create sustainable jobs for rural residents, and preserve traditional customs. Providing free training, a school was set up to educate and employ residents from rural and disadvantaged communities in Vietnam.

As a non-profit organisation, Viet Artisans continuously requires support from the community through financial contributions, volunteerism and corporate partnerships. In 2008, Lily Phan, the founder of Viet Artisans, met Claire Chiang, the co-founder of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, at a Corporate Social Responsibility event in Vietnam. Claire, and Banyan Tree as a whole, are very passionate about creating meaningful empowerment for disadvantaged communities all over the world.

With their shared philosophies, Banyan Tree has been supporting Viet Artisans in providing free job training and placement for rural women in Vietnam. Banyan Tree has also been a mentor for the young designers to come up with eco- and user-friendly products. Driven by its role as a socially-responsible tourism retailer, Banyan Tree Gallery

has commissioned the group to produce the Vanda Miss Joaquim objets d’art by employing their expert techniques in utilising flowers to create traditional crafts. In support of Banyan Tree Gallery’s goal to alleviate rural poverty, they appointed the craft producers to design and hand make various environmentally-friendly jewellery, decorative, and culinary items using Vanda Miss Joaquim flowers.

Under Banyan Tree’s support, Viet Artisans grew from having one product to 20 products; they have produced handmade and eco-friendly items ranging from postcards, greeting cards, bags, purses, and notebooks. To date, the achievements of Viet Artisans reflect a deep commitment of Banyan Tree to invest in local communities worldwide.

Viet Artisans, together with Banyan Tree, have touched and made better the lives of these craftspersons. Both organisations have, in fact, been instrumental to reaching their dreams. Going back to Oanh’s

story, her work at Viet Artisans has enabled her to learn skills, create products and contribute to the organisation. Clutched with ambition and strong determination, she finally has a chance to learn, grow and achieve her dreams. She has slowly rebuilt her house with a solid roof to shelter her from the rain and sun, and hopes to create many products and work with Viet Artisans for the long haul. The purchase of Viet Artisan’s products does not only support the group’s goals but also fulfill the dreams of Oanh and the rest of the organisation’s hardworking artisans.
