As an architecture student I have developed specific personal goals in

my education. I push myself in areas of design, technology, and visual

representation of a building for better understanding. My hope is that

the development and progression of these areas can be seen through

the work represented in this portfolio.

Pavilion for a Writer

This writer needed a pavilion that incorporated his three muses: a paint-

ing, a piece of sculpture, and a piece of writing. One of his neighbors had

a garden that he was allowed access into, and the site had a 10-foot drop

at some point.

Truism

ConceptThe circulation of this pavilion was designed to create a systematic interac-

tion with each muse on the journey through the interior. When the writer

walked inside he would see a wall of bookshelves. The written muse would

be among these with a sliver of wall taken away from both sides to allow the

piece a glow of daylight that set it apart from the others. The painting was

placed on axis with the stairs. The sculpture was placed outside the glazed

writing room of the pavilion in line with the circulation axis.

NoDa Fire Station

The situation given for this project included the need to house

twice the number of fire fighters as the original fire house and the

addition of another ladder truck. This building is located on an

angled lot in a tight urban environment.

Truisms

ConceptTo respond to the tight urban fabric, this fire station needed to be

built up vertically to accomodate the added factors. The building

was designed to fit the angle of the site while the apparatus room

was rotated to be perpendicular to the main road. This allows for a

faster response to emergencies. Circulation from any part of the

building to the apparatus room was key.

Flexible Spaces

This particular dance company is constantly expanding.Truism

The building that houses this dance company would be able to expand

with their needs so they do not have to continuously change locations.

The architecture can grow with the company. As a corollary to this con-

cept, the building can also be adjustable to the many different functions

taking place inside. Moveable walls allow for spaces that can adjust in

size for multiple functions.

Digital Fabrication

Architecture is one field that stands to benefit greatly from cur-

rent and future technology. The computer can not only be utilzed

as a design tool, but also as a diagnostic tool. Using the computer

an architectuct can test the structural soundness, the efficiency of

daylighting and natural ventillation, and the three dimensional as-

pects of a design.

Truism

The practice of creating and cutting simple designs using technol-

ogy serves to teach the basics of digital fabrication. Those basic

ideas can then be put towards larger projects.

Proposed Urban Design Plan

Housing at University Place

University Place is not reaching its full potential. Its needs to be rede-

signed to bring people in. It also needs better circulation.

Truisms

ConceptPedestrian circulation paths are added to provide easy access as well as

creating visual axes to pull more people in. On-street retail with parallel

parking and housing with parking decks also help to bring more people

in, making this area lively and more utilized.

Pavilion Location

Pavilion Installation

The new College of Arts and Archtiecture is lacking in a sense of com-

munity and camaraderie.

Truism

ConceptThe installation represents the five schools in the College of Arts and

Architecture. The boxes are meant to ‘communicate’ to each other

through the play of light and how it filters through one box and reflects

onto others.

Framing Urban Living

The site of my building is a unique location in Greensboro because it is

adjacent to the well-used Center City Park.

Truism

ConceptMy goal was to create an architectural frame for urban life through

a structure consisting of a retail base and a housing tower on top.

Through the frames of the building, the housing residents can observe

people in both parks and the occupiers of the park can see the building

residents.

Scripting Views

The objective of The Art Fund Pavilion architecture competition was to

create a pavilion that could be utilized as an exhibition space, a formal

presentation space, and an informal gathering or party space.

Truism

ConceptIn this group project, our goal was to create a pavilion that would script

the views and experiences of the users. The ribbon-like structure not

only served as the ‘walls’ to close in the pavilion, but they also formed

the plinths and seating oustide and inside the structure. The weaving

of the plywood strips allowed for a strong structural hold. Also, the

gaps between the strips allowed us to reveal specific pieces of work on

exhibit.
