Shoreline / Stacked CityThis proposal extends the existing city into the lake to provide more residential, commercial and recreational space adjacent the shoreline. Recognizing that development along the lakefront should be limited yet also allow for high-density living, a new urban morphology – STACKED CITY - is proposed. Stacked city, is informed by an earlier exercise that manipulated and assembled graphic patterns of suburban residential development into different stacked organizations to create new living and social environments. Deploying different layers and different stacked combinations of layers creates a unique vertical urban organization. Owing to the continuous design of the layers, Shore Line /Stack City can expand over time. For example, expand across the lake infinitely to connect different shoreline cities depending on the population growth and need.

This project was an investigation with two major curves: the “catenary” and the “Bezier”. The exploration was started by, conducting physical experiments in curvature that produce scientic models to be studied. The rst iterations of experiments was, a series of two-dimensional, physical experiments. Next, the curves generated were reconstructed using another series of curves, creating a “nesting” of curves. Then, these nested systems were translated into three-dimensional components. The nal step was to create a canopy by generating a eld of these components.

The site is located in between Huron, Superior and Clark, Dearborn. This very residential area called for a continuous residential program. Therefore, the entire structure is wrapped by residential program. Making a continuous ow of pedestrian trac throughout the building. The building was constructed using grids of programs layered over each other which creates dierent spaces through the dierent interacting programs. Through these dierent interacting spaces, new spaces are created.
