DESIGN SCHOOL EXPANSIONThe design school expansion serves to connect the exist-ing College of Design with NC State University in its en-tirety. A focus was made on the public realm by providing diverse settings for people to enter, walk through, and leave the area.

Through research and analy-sis, the design is based on the image of two arms spreading out from one pivotal point. The expansion also serves to act as a gateway into the de-sign campus.

CHARLESTON CITY MUSUEMThe study of Charleston al-lowed for analysis at three different scales - the city scale, the precinct scale, and the human scale.

Given a specific site in regards to the city, emphasis was put on the relationship between the commerical and residen-tial streets of Charleston.

The museum is inward-fo-cused, much like the resi-dential houses, yet provides a rich, spatial, and temporal experience through the use of different types of walls and volumes.

ARTIST STAIRCASEThe following exercise dem-onstrates the different types of construction techniques and material choices used for replacing an aging staircase located beside Kamphoefner Hall at NC State.

The simple and elegant form of the staircase provides a desirable entrance from SAS Hall to the classes and dor-mitories on east campus. Seen as functional and aes-thetic, the staircase may also be seen as a sculpture piece.

The use of corten steel for the steel frames allows the structure to rust gracefully, adding time as another ele-ment of the staircase.

EXPLORIS MIDDLE SCHOOLAs the name presents itself, Exploris Middle School brings students together through methods of inquiry and inves-tigation. The objective for this exercise was to maintain and improve this type of learning environment.

Because the school is located close to the center of the city, creating a safe and healthy environment was stressed.

The school is centered on the courtyard, where students are able to physically engage themselves in an open, safe space. A bridge on the top level connects the two build-ings, also serving as an iconic piece of the school.

HOUSE IN THE CITYThe study of the home pro-vided a basis of phenomenol-ogy, bringing certain issues to the forefront, such as transi-tional spaces and a courtyard typology.

Bordering a creek downhill, the house is set overlook-ing the creek, looking away from the city and into a wall of trees.

The focus of the hosue is on the shared spaces - the din-ing/living/kitchen area where a family is able to interact with each other on a daily ba-sis.

Intended for a multigenera-tional family, a guest bed-room is detached from the sleeping quarters where a family member may eventu-ally move in to take care of the elder generation.
