LearnEnglish Teens – British Council Hi Ebtehal Ahmed, for tworeasons. Firstly the most important thing is communication we wantpeople to feel free to communicate with us without worrying aboutmaking mistakes. If we can understand then that's all that matters. Itcan be demotivating and even annoying if someone corrects you allthe time rather than answering your question! Secondly it's just notpractical with so many posts and questions! If we corrected every oneit would take us months!NeilLike · 9 · Yesterday at 3:53pm

LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Hamdy Timtamy, there's nospecial way I think these have different uses and you just have tolearn the differences. For example:http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/.../historicorhistoricalRespectable means obeying the moral or social standards that areaccepted by most people a respectable person is someone who canbe respected for this. Respectful means that you show respect tosomeone else. A good dictionary will help with this like the Oxford oneI linked to or this one:

How would yourespond to questions such as these? Thanks in advance Unlike · Reply · 1 · Yesterday at 3:35pm

LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Kelly, I would explain to them thatit's not possible or helpful to think in those terms. You have to explainto them that Band scores are not awarded based on a simplechecklist of 'x complex sentences = Band 7', but on the overalleffectiveness of the essay and the interplay of the four criteria in theband descriptors. I think the best approach would be to use thematerials from Weeks 4 and 6 on assessment to help them see that, and also perhaps share these videos with them:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43AlGwz1Aq0...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzjXIOvWVt0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUJV_okEACoNeil

In Academic Task One, it will depend on the data that you haveto describe for example if you are comparing data from 2010 and2012, it would all be in the past, but you need to read the questioncarefully and decide which tenses you will need.NeilLike · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren · 2 hrs

LE Freddie Hi Armando. We often use 'would' to make polite rquestsand suggestions'. It can be used in more informal contexts although itmight be replaced by another modal that sounds a little more direct,e.g. 'can'. for requests, e.g. 'would you mind telling me....', 'can you letme know....'. We also use would to sound less direct in other kinds ofphrases, e.g. 'I would be grateful if you could reply as soon aspossible'. Here a more informal version might sound something like"Could you get back to me as soon as you can".Like · Yesterday at 2:59pm

Eugenia Pretel Hello Neil. I would like to ask you about the speaking test. One of the marking criteria is grammatical range and accuracy. Whatgrammatical structures should one use if aiming to Band 9?Unlike · Reply · 1 · Yesterday at 3:21pm

LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Eugenia, I'm afraid I can't reallyanswer that. the assessment is not based on a shopping list ofstructures, but on how effectively and appropriately they are used toexpress your ideas. I'm sure you have a clear idea of the type ofthings this means a range of tenses, conditionals, relative clauses, inversion for emphasis, parallel structures and many more. But thepoint is, simply using a list of structures does not mean that you willget Band 7, 8 or 9 what is important is how you use them, incombination with the other criteria to answer the question.NeilLike · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren · 1 hr

Ahmed Kamel I'm a bit confused using some group words, these words aresingle in structure but express plural meaning such as people, team,crew....etc, how we should treat with this words form plural or singular point?? Thank you.Unlike · Reply · 1 · Yesterday at 3:18pm

LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Ahmed Kamel, people is notsingular in structure, it is an irregular plural the plural of person. Sopeople needs a plural verb. With collective nouns like team, crew, family etc. it is a little more complicated. They can be used withsingular or plural verbs depending on context and how you arethinking of them. In British English we most often use them with pluralverbs, but both are possible. For example, 'family'. If we think of afamily as a group of individuals then we use the plural form myfamily are coming for dinner on Sunday for example. When we thinkof 'family' as a single unit, then it is different. For example, 'my family isquite large' here I' describing the family unit, not the individuals. As Isaid, in British English in sentences like the first on, we prefer to usethe plural. Semiformal is the level people use in typical everydaywork or educational contexts. For example if you are speaking toclients at work or colleagues from another office you wouldn't speak tothem like your close friends at a party and you wouldn't use slang etc.!You would want to be friendly and polite but you wouldn't want to betoo formal because it could sound unnatural plus the formality couldmake it seem less friendly. That's what semiformal is aconversational tone, but with some features of formal language.NeilLike · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren · 1 hr

Abu Moaad Zakaria hi , my question that sometimes I'M Suffering when readsome questions or paragraphs and having a new vocabulary and the fullmeaning of sentence may be not clear , how can I find the best solution in thiscase.Unlike · Reply · 1 · 12 hrs · Edited

LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Abu Moaad Zakaria, that cancertainly be a problem. There are a few things to think about. First ofall the new vocabulary may not be necessary to answer thequestions, so check first before spending too much time on it. If it is inpart of the text which may be important, then the first thing to do isignore the unfamiliar word. Read the rest of the sentence orparagraph and see if you can understand the overall meaning withoutthat word. That can happen sometimes! If not then try to work out themeaning from the context. Read the sentences before and after theyoften explain or give more details. Try to think what other words wouldmake sense there instead. But remember, time is limited so you can'tspend long on this. If you can't work it out, then guess an answer andmove on you don't want to lose more points fro questions you cananswer because you spent too long on one you couldn't! Concentrateon the ones you can get. NeilLike · Commented on by Neil Stewart McLaren · 55 mins

Is it right to look up in a dictionary forunfamiliar word while reading the first time or is it better to search them afterreading? Many thanks!Like · Reply · 3 · Yesterday at 2:32pm

David Lewis Hello Chaoqun, you probably don't need to rememberevery unknown word you come across when reading, you can oftenusually understand a text without knowing every word. But those youdo want to check later are worth noting down. I'd suggest trying towork out their meaning from context before checking in a dictionary.Like · 1 · Yesterday at 2:36pm

LE Freddie Hi Choaqun. Good question. It is important to learn newvocabulary whilst reading, but learning every unknown word is nothelpful as there are too many to learn. You could use the CambridgeLearner Dictionary to check the level of the word. Words that are B1,B2, C1, C2 are good words to record and review. Remember thatwhen reading and coming across unknown words in the IELTS test, you may have to guess the meaning from the context, so this is animportant skill to practice too.http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/

LE Freddie Hi Lalla. You have to practice strategies that will save youtime answering the questions. Skimming and scanning are helpful.Skimming is used to get a general idea of th topic and the layout of anarticle and scanning is used to locate specific areas of a text.Combining these strategies instead of trying to read the wholepassage word by word is essential for answering the question withinthe time limit.

If you find that you are having real problemsunderstanding the general meaning of the text then you have chosensomething too difficult for you. Like training for sport, you have to buildup to reading more challenging texts step by step. If you don't you willbecome frustrated, lose motivation and certainly won't enjoy readingin English. Afroza Begum Rosy Hi, I am Afroza Begum Rosy. Please tell me how tomake myself interested more in reading.Unlike · Reply · 1 · 16 hrs · Edited

LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Afroza Begum Rosy, that's adifficult question! It's a fact that not everyone enjoys reading, and ifyou are not a keen reader even in your own language, it's unlikelyyou will be more keen in English! However, I'm sure there are thingsthat you are interested in which you could read about. To build yourskills and improve your vocabulary, you can read a huge range ofthings. Almost anything you choose magazines, blogs, newspapers, websites etc. will have some new vocabulary and will give youpractice. So don't feel you have to read only one type of thing findsomething you like or are interested in, then find online magazines orblogs related to that, and start practising! Once your reading improvesthen you can start looking at the types of text found in IELTS. Neil
