2011-2012 School Grades

• Many changes!– Students who counted– Florida Alternate Assessment– Algebra EOC– Writing cut score– No Science score for high school– No lower quartile penalty & lower quartile definition– Learning Gain calculations– Change in how graduation was calculated– Shift in point distributions

High School Grading is Unique• Two major sections – Assessment• FCAT Reading• FCAT Writing• Algebra EOC• Florida Alternate Assessment (reading, writing, math

and science)

– Non-Assessment Components• Acceleration• Graduation• College Readiness

How is this grade calculated?

Assessment Components

5Spruce Creek High

Who counts?

• Students enrolled in the same school for full academic year (Oct. & Feb. FTE count)

• ELL students who have one year or more of instruction in the U.S.

• All students classified as a “student with disability” (SWD, or ESE)

• Hospital/Homebound are credited back to zoned school

Students who earned a passing EOC score in middle school will also count in their high school numerator

and denominator their 9th grade year.9Spruce Creek High

Math Learning Gains

Numerator: Students making a learning gain by maintaining a 3, 4 or 5or moving up one level

or making more than one year’s growth in the Level 1 or 2 category

Denominator: All students taking the EOC or FAA with a valid score

reported

A student who increases their EOC score to a 4 is given an 1.1 weighting and an increase to a 5 is given a 1.2 weighting in the numerator

13Spruce Creek High

EOC vs. FCAT for gains

• Most students who take the Algebra EOC in high school have an 8th grade math score.

• The learning gains are calculated by converting both the 9th grade Algebra score and the 8th grade FCAT score to a common scale (T-scores).

• Any increase in T score is counted as learning gain.

14Spruce Creek High

Extra Weightings for Learning Gains

• A student who increases their FCAT/EOC score to a 4 is given an 1.1 weighting

• A student who increases their FCAT/EOC score to a 5 is given a 1.2 weighting in the numerator

• A Level 1 or 2 student who increase their score by more than 33% of what is required for FCAT/EOC or FAA gains is given a 1.1 weighting in the numerator

Lower Quartile Learning Gains

Numerator: Students in denominator who make a learning gain

Denominator: Students who meet criteria to be included in school grade

AND have a prior year and current year FCAT/EOC score

AND are ranked in the lowest 25% based on prior year score

AND have a 1 or 2 on that prior year score 17Spruce Creek High

Lower Quartile

• There is separate lower quartile for reading and for math

• For 2011-2012 no school was penalized for insufficient progress of lower quartile – this will be reinstated next year.

What to do about science??

• No FCAT science in 2012• Biology was a baseline – no cut score, no

proficiency• No science score• Each assessment component was multiplied

by 1.143 to keep the total points at 800 for this year

23Spruce Creek High

Bonus Points

• Includes a different group of students– Only standard curriculum students, speech

impaired, gifted, and hospital-homebound– ELL students who have been in an ESOL program

for more than 2 years

• 10 points are awarded if 50% or more of the students who retake an FCAT or EOC earn a passing score.

24Spruce Creek High

Bonus

Numerator: students in the denominator who earning a passing FCAT or EOC score on the retake

Denominator: Must be enrolled in the same school for two consecutive years (for reading), who have not met graduation requirements for

Reading and /or EOC assessments, but have attempted, as a 9th or 10th grader

4 year Federal Graduation rate

Numerator: The number of on time graduates

Denominator: Adjusted cohort

Graduates include ONLY those who receive a standard diploma – no special diploma, no GED, no DSC transfer

Adjusted cohort is everyone who entered within the last four years that has not transferred to another high school.

Denominator: Adjusted cohort of At-Risk students

At-Risk students are defined as any student who earned a 1 or a 2 on either the 8th Grade Reading or the 8th Grade Math FCAT

Otherwise, calculated just like 4 year rate 34Spruce Creek High

Postsecondary Readiness

Numerator: The number students scoring at “ready” levels on the ACT or SAT or PERT

Denominator: The number of all on-time graduates

For students who take more than one of the tests in the numerator, the highest score is taken

This is calculated separately for both Reading and Math

The “A” Threshold

If a school earns enough points to be an “A”, the at-Risk Graduation must be at 65%

OrIf between 55% and 65% the rate must increase

by 1% from last yearOr

If less than 55% the rate must increase by 5% from last year

48Spruce Creek High

Our Threshold….Our total points earned = 1209Our at-risk graduation rate = 56%Our change in rate from last year = +5%

Conclusion: We earned enough points to be an “A”. Our at-risk graduation rate was 56% and increased 5% from last year, therefore we were not penalized.
