Underwater Odyssey

Hello, and welcome to Underwater Odyssey.

My name is Krista Dunlop. As a professional scuba diver since 1994, I have a unique perspective of the underwater world and the environmental crisis we adults have caused.

When I’m scuba diving and I see a turtle’s face mutilated by a boat propeller, or see what was once a beautiful coloured coral reef now bleached white, or see a dolphin calf’s tail that has fallen off because it had gotten so tightly wrapped up in a crab trap line ... all that comes to my mind is ... what have we done. Then I find myself clearing my mask ... to wash away my tears.

As a professional scuba diver, I believe it is my personal responsibility to be a guardian of our blue planet and to remindchildren and adults of all that the underwater world has given us ... human survival, beauty and marine animal friendships. This is a cause that I am personally and professionally passionate about.

Through my business communications company, Krista Dunlop & Associates Inc. (www.kdainc.ca), I decided to sponsor a Corporate Environmental Awareness Educational Initiative – Underwater Odyssey – as a means to help preserve our blue planet.

I invite you to join me on this exciting journey to create a Blue Planet Legacy, one we all can be proud of leaving to our children and generations to come, through corporate environmental awareness educational program fundraising initiatives.

Hi, I’m Your Manatee Friend!I weigh about 360-540 kilograms (800-1200 pounds) and I am about 3 metres (10 feet) long. I can live in fresh, brackish, or salt water. I need clean water, lots of plants to eat, space, and safe, protected areas to swim.

Can you hel p us?Please don’t feed us.

Why?• Because … we can be very sick if we eat

your food.

• Because … we can be hooked by fishermen if we get too close.

• Because … we are wild animals and need to stay wild to survive.

• Because … we can get hit by boat propellers.

Please don’t throw trash in the waterways.

Why?• Because … if we swallow garbage it can

choke us, hurt our tummies, or even kill us.

How Blue Planet Legacy Hero Kids can help the manatees: • When swimming with us please do not touch us …

let’s just watch and learn from each other.

• Watch out for us when you are on a boat … we are slow swimmers that can get injured by boat propellers and because we like to feed on the vegetation that gets wrapped around the boat’s propeller.

• Tell your friends and family what you have learned!

• Ask your teacher how your class can adopt a manatee friend!

Hi, I’m Your Bot t lenose Dolphin Friend!I am around 2.5 metres (8 feet) long and weigh between 200-300 kilograms (440-660 pounds). I have only one set of 88-100 teeth for life. I use my teeth to catch my food and then I swallow it whole. Like humans, I’m warm-blooded.

Can you hel p us?Please don’t feed us.

Why?• Because … we can be very sick if we eat

your food.

• Because … we can be hooked by fishermen if we get too close.

• Because … we are wild animals and need to stay wild to survive.

• Because … we can become “beggar dolphins” and stop hunting our wild prey which can cause us to become sick or injured.

Please don’t throw trash in the waterways.

Why?• Because … when dolphins accidentally eat

trash it can cause inner injury and starvation.

• Because … when a young dolphin is entangled in a fishing line it usually dies very slowly and painfully when its growing body is restricted by the rubbish.

How Blue Planet Legacy Hero Kids can help the bottlenose dolphins:

• Share what you learned with friends and family!

• Adopt a bottlenose dolphin through Blue Planet Legacy Programs!

• You can help by just remembering not to release balloons or throw trash into the ocean.

Hi, I’m Your Whale Shark Friend! I am the largest living fish in the world! I was first discovered in 1829 off the coast of South Africa. My large mouth is on the front of my short snout which is 1.5 metres (5 feet) long. My mouth contains 3,000 little teeth arranged into about 300 rows. I eat by sucking in my food. My food is very small and called plankton.

Can you hel p us?Please do not touch us.

Why?• Because … we get scared.

• Because … we could hurt you if our big tail hits you by accident.

Approach us slowly when you’re in a boat.

Why?• Because … we get scared when a fast boat

tries to chase us.

How Blue Planet Legacy Hero Kids can help the whale sharks:

• Do not touch, capture, restrict, or chase a whale shark. Use a 3 metre (10 feet) distance as a rule of thumb!

• Do not use a flash when taking pictures of a whale shark.

Hi, I’m Your Green Sea Turt l e Friend! The green sea turtle grows to about 1.2 metres (4 feet) long and weighs between 90-140 kilograms (200-300 pounds). Young green sea turtles feed mostly on worms, shellfish, sea insects, algae and grass. As they approach adulthood, their diet changes to sea grasses and algae. Although green sea turtles do not have teeth, they use their jaws to help them crush their food. Female green sea turtles return to the same beach they hatched on to lay their own eggs. A green sea turtle does not have the ability to pull their head and flippers inside their shell for protection.

Can you hel p us?Please do not throw trash in the water or on the beach.

Why?• Because … we become entangled by marine

debris or choke to death on trash that we mistake for food.

• Because … we travel over 1600 kilometres (1000 miles) to the beaches we were born on to lay our eggs.

Do not disturb turtle nests on the beach.

Why?• Because … we only have a narrow strip of sand

since the beaches are crowded with people. We return at night to nest when people are gone. If the hatchlings do not reach the ocean before the hot sun comes up they will die.

Still, many of the hatchlings that do make it to the water may be eaten by fish and marine animals. Only one or two green sea turtle hatchlings live to adulthood out of 1000. Where our hatchlings go to spend their first years of life is kept as a mystery to protect them. However, you will see our little hatchlings again when they have reached about seven years old, feeding offshore in turtle grass beds.

How Blue Planet Legacy Hero Kids can help the green sea turtles:

• Adopt a green sea turtle from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (www.cmaquarium.org)!

• Tell all your friends and family that green sea turtles are an important part of our environment and should be protected.

• Get together with your friends and participate in a beach clean up.

• Do a presentation on turtles for class to raise awareness.
