First Regional Workshop on Sustainable Building Policies in South-East Asia

The United Nations Environment Programme-Sustainable
Buildings and Climate Initiative (UNEP-SBCI) in partnership
with the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore
(BCA) is conducting the Regional Status Report in South-
East Asia. This regional status reporting in South-East Asia
will collate the current status and trends from sustainable
buildings initiatives in the region.
BCA hosted the First UNEP SBCI-BCA Regional Workshop
on Sustainable Building Policies in South-East Asia,
concurrently with the Singapore Green Building Council
Green Building Conference / World Green Building Council
International Congress 2010 in Singapore in September
2010, with delegates from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia,Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailandand Vietnam.

During this First UNEP SBCI-BCA Regional Workshop the
Quick Views on Sustainable Building Policies were
presented and discussed. The country presentations
highlighted country’s sustainable building policies in several
categories of policy instruments, as well as country’s
framework of sustainable development, rating systems and
best practices. In general the emphasis of the state of play in
the region is on energy efficient building polices.
Examples of presented rating systems of sustainable
buildings in the region are: Greenship [Indonesia], Green
Building Index (GBI) [Malaysia], BCA Green Mark Scheme
[Singapore], BERDE and GBI Rating Systems [Philippines]
and LOTUS VN Green Rating Tool [Vietnam]. Thailand also
presented several labels developed for their building sector.

Workshop, the conclusions in the wrap up session from the
round table dialogues by the delegates indicated similar
challenges and opportunities among countries in
developing and implementing sustainable building policies,
such as awareness by stakeholders, funding, initial
investments, coordination among different ministries
involved, participation of the private sector, collaboration
between private and public sector, technical know-how and
political will.
In this last session of the First UNEP SBCI-BCA Regional
Workshop, the need for regional coordination was also
emphasised, especially in setting up regional studies,
workshops, seminars and trainings.

the Draft Regional Status Report on Sustainable Building
Policies in South-East Asia will be drafted.
Our appreciation goes to the Singapore Green Building
Council (SGBC) and the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) Regional Office Asia and the Pacific
(ROAP), for co-sponsoring the First UNEP SBCI-BCA
Regional Workshop.
The Second UNEP SBCI-BCA Regional Workshop on
Sustainable Building Policies in South-East Asia will take
place early next year. In this workshop, the Draft Regional
Status Report on Sustainable Building Policies in South-East
Asia will be tabled.
