The next session was by Dr Pooja Gupta, Associate professor, Pharmacology, AIIMS on “Issues in Informed Consent’. The session was very interesting and explained the concept of “Understood Consent” instead of informed consent as it is extremely crucial for the clinician to explain and communicate to the patient about the procedure in a way they understand, in the language they are comfortable with. It was stressed that when it comes to ethics, the process is more important than the outcome achieved. So, for clinicians it is important to follow the protocols and procedures to refrain from falling under the unethical practices.

The next session was by Dr Y.K Gupta, Principal Advisor, THSTI-DBT and Chairman, SGT Council of Biomedical research on the topic “Ethical issues in Marginalized Population”. He explained the various challenges and ethical issues when doing and field research involving the tribal and other marginalized population as there is always a barrier of communication and the literacy rate in these populations may pose more challenges while conducting research on these groups of populations. He gain emphasized on the importance of Understood consent and the nominees who are eligible to give consent by citing various examples of the ethical challenges that have been faced in the past. By mentioning the earlier researches conducted that failed on ethical norms, he apprised the audience about take home messages about do’s and don’ts while taking consent and conducting research and trials involving human subjects.

This was followed by conclusion of the scientific session and proposal of Vote of Thanks by Dr Astha Chaudhry, Secretary UNESCO Bioethics Unit.
