ECONOMIC OVERVIEW

• Most of Vanuatu's population lives in remote and rural areas

• Subsistence farming and fishing are the main sources of livelihood and income

• Tourism accounts for apx 40% of GDP• Less that one third of the working age

population are in formal employment

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH

• The Vanuatu TVET Sector Strengthening Program supports provincial economic development through targeted training services

• Establishment of TVET Centres in the Provinces to support skills development.

PROVINCIAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT

• Accredited training -short courses training delivered by local registered training providers inline with provincial economic development priorities

• Business development services-targeted coaching and workshops to existing and start up businesses and cooperatives with business planning and management and improved productivity

• Training provider support services -supports training providers to become registered and to develop and deliver accredited modular courses that respond to productive sector demand and are linked to economic outcomes

• IT services- access to computers, internet, printers and photocopiers as a complementary support to the other Centre services

LAKATORO PALM LODGE : CASE STUDY

• From a 1500 VT/night guest house to a Lodge with a new bungalow at 7000 VT/night through assistance in design, building, decoration and customer service coaching and training

• Lakatoro Palm Lodge is the demonstration that outer island bungalows can generate profit and employment with quality skills development support

INVESTMENT IN TVET

Enablers: •Substantial commitment by current Vanuatu Government to strengthen the capacity of Public and Private training providers•Recent establishment of the Vanuatu Qualification Authority (VQA) to implement and monitor the Vanuatu Qualifications TVET Framework and registration of all Training Providers

Barriers: •Difficulties in Training Providers accepting an industry led training agenda•Limited Difficulties in meeting the training needs in the informal sector
