unforgettable peace: born again to enjoy shalom
TRANSCRIPT
For decades, Natalie Cole resisted recording her father Nat King Cole’s music. Yet, when she finally paid homage by releasing an interactive duet capturing her dad’s voice from decades be-fore, her modern record-ing of “Unforgettable” became the Grammy Award Song of the Year.
The beautiful melo-dies of “Unforgettable” with the Coles’ harmo-nized voices produced one of America’s great romantic songs. Yet, for some obtuse reason, when I hear the song, my mind often wanders to unforgettable places I have visited. One such memorable spot that flashes to mind is the Mamertine Prison within the ancient Forum in Rome.
In this old cistern attached to Rome’s main sewer, Saint Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians. There he was under house arrest in dungeon-like conditions, attached to a Roman soldier by a short chain while
awaiting trial and possible execution. Visiting this his-toric site left an unforgettable
impression on my mind of the sharp contradiction of Paul seeking to make a difference in the lives of
people he loved in Philippi while experiencing severe personal discomfort.
Somehow, despite his distressful circumstances, Paul believed that his life in Christ meant fruitful
labor for him as he expressed:“For to me to live is Christ
and to die is gain.” — Philip-pians 1:21
Do you ever wish your circumstances were different? Paul’s words remind us that when we are facing major chal-lenges or difficulties, we can be encouraged by finding purpose in the midst of our struggles.
Paul had been shipwrecked, flogged, stoned, persecuted and now jailed. Yet, he knew throughout his trials that he had been born again in Jesus and that God still had useful plans
for his life. And we know that for those
who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. — Romans 8:28
Paul understood that believers in Christ are promised victory and that even in the midst of ad-versity, God assures the blessing of amazing peace.
“The peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
Dr. Jeremiah Johnston ex-plains in his book, “Unleashing Peace,” that when, “Paul met Jesus. For the first time in his troubled life, he was enveloped by the peace of God — a peace so transforming and so over-whelming it simply surpassed his ability to understand it. … Having experienced the peace, the shalom of God, Paul discov-ered what true happiness is.”
The Bible does not promise us problem-free lives. More precisely, if you have been born
again in Christ Jesus, you are promised this peace that sur-passes all understanding, a state of genuine true happiness.
Recalling Paul’s unforgettable Roman imprisonment condi-tions, prompts me to remind myself that this gift of amazing peace, regardless of existing circumstances, is always readily available. Do you have an unfor-gettable trigger that reminds you to seek this promise of amaz-ing peace which you were born again to experience regardless of circumstances?
Prayer: Father, may we experi-ence Your gift of unforgettable peace and discover the true hap-piness exemplified by Paul as, in all circumstances, we keep our hearts and minds centered on Christ Jesus.” Amen.

Unforgettable peace: Born again to enjoy Shalom
HollandContinued from page 3B
that he has been abandoned by God. I’m sure you will agree it’s not a coin-cidence that I would be writing about the very thing that he just contacted me about. It hurts me to see others discouraged as we are living in dif-ficult times but there will be seasons when we are convinced he is not concerned about what we are going through. This happens to all of us because our emotions namely what we see, hear and feel are so strong, however, these natural feelings can be misleading and often prove that things are not always the way they seem. Divine truth is found in the spiritual realm with God and is based on his nature and character, which is an extension of what he has prom-ised in his word.
“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will per-sonally go ahead of you. He will nei-ther fail you nor abandon you. And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will never leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed” (Deu-teronomy 31:6,8).
The desert is a hot and dry envi-ronment, and we read in the Bible that many of God’s people, including Jesus himself, spent some agoniz-ing times there. But let us remember that for whatever reason we may go through these wilderness experienc-es, God is not only with us every step of the way, but he also promises after a certain amount of time to lead us back into the cool refreshing waters of his joy, peace and restoration.
Ask Jesus to forgive and cleanse your heart, trust in his endless grace, and as sure as the sun will rise tomor-row, you will find yourself back in his everlasting arms of love.
