The Pordenone golf club has just extendedits course to 18 holes, attaining an overall72-par course of 5980 metres. The first 9-hole circuit extends over a hilly terraininside the prestigious natural park of VillaPolicreti, a residence of particular historicand architectural interest erected in the16th century. Now an elegant hotel, thevilla houses a renown restaurant and theclubhouse, overlooking the lush green golfcourse. The second, more recently built, 9holes extend over a flat terrain enhancedby three lakes.

At 800 metres above sea level, Tarvisiooffers a characteristic mountain coursewith spacious natural fairways originallydesigned by Giacomo Cabrini in 1992, andextended to 18 holes in 2003 by theCanadian architect Graham Cooke, whoserestyling can be seen in his signature gen-tle undulations. Embraced by the splendidlandscape of the toweringrocky peaks of the GiulianAlps, the technically inte-resting course provides18 holes in such a stun-ning setting that eachgame is an unforgett-able experience.The course stretchesout through the woodsof the splendidTarvisio forest andfeatures spacious gre-ens occasionally hid-den among the pine

trees and beeches, often guarded by bun-kers or by steep dips making the approachto the green difficult for even the mostexpert players. The 2nd hole is remarkablybeautiful: at the foot of the rocky Mangartmountain (2677 m) with a long uphillgreen providing various levels of difficulty,it offers 360° panoramic views across thewhole valley. Tarvisio area, you simply must visit thedell of the Fusine lakes, one of the most

enchanting places in Friuli Venezia Giulia.Nestled in a thick wood of spruces, thelakes of glacial origin are today the onlyplace where you can grasp how sereneand impressive mother nature really is.

Monte Lussari is another gem of incom-parable beauty. Here you can admire a

splendid natural setting of majestic, spi-ring peaks. Besides being a place of

naturalistic interest, it is also the site ofa sanctuary erected in 1360, and a

place of pilgrimage for the Slav, Italianand German peoples.

This age-old melting pot of the threeethnic groups can be found in the cook-ing which yields its best fruits in thesemountains. Alongside typical mountaindishes, such as game, mushrooms andcheeses, you can also savour excellent

fish dishes. This has led to manyrestaurants and trattorias serving dishes

good enough to delight any gourmet.

The Golf Club Trieste was the first club inFriuli Venezia Giulia to be founded by theallied troops straight after the SecondWorld War, and it celebrated its fiftiethanniversary in 2005. The course is a fewminutes away from the Slovenian borderand overlooks the stunning view of the Gulfof Trieste. The green at the 17th hole looksas if it is suspended over the sea, withsplendid views stretching fromthe Grado lagoon andLignano, right across to theIstrian coast.

The whole of the 72-par, 5810-metre cour-se nestles perfectly among the rugged hillsof the Karst uplands, bordered by oaks andMediterranean pines. The course looks fair-ly easy at first glance, but it should not betreated lightly. Technique, accuracy andconcentration are essential at the narrowerholes, where there are plenty of trickyparts and impossible roughs, especiallywhen the Bora wind blows off the gulf,making the course even more challenging.

its splendid town centre, where you cando some shopping, take a rest on the

seafront or eat some delicious fishcaught in the gulf. Seafood is an essen-

tial ingredient in the Triestine cuisine.The town is dotted with countless

restaurants, for all wallet sizes, servingfish and shellfish in all shapes and

sizes. Sardoni are the most popular fishand they are normally served fried, in

breadcrumbs, or in savor (fried andmarinated in vinegar and onion). But

there is also bass, sea bream, tuna fish,mussels, clams, cuttlefish and all the

seafood the fish market offers, bothfrom the Gulf and imported.

If, on the other hand, you would prefera historical and cultural visit to the

region’s capital, we recommend a tourof the three castles: Castello di San

Giusto, the town’s place of origin, withits spectacular view of the whole gulf;Castello di Miramare, the love nest ofMaximilian of Hapsburg and Charlotte

of Belgium and, finally, Castello diDuino, where the family of the Princes

of Torre and Tasso still reside.

At just 5 kilometres from San Daniele, youfind 18 splendid holes against a backdropof hills dotted with secular oaks, beechesand wild cherry trees. This is the Golf ClubUdine. Founded in 1972, the courseis situated in Fagagna, in theheart of the morenic Friulianhills at just 18 km fromUdine; it combines thepleasure of playing golfwith an exclusive andrelaxing landscape. The original 9-holecourse was desi-gned by architectsJohn Harris and

Marco Croze; over the years it has beencompleted by Marco Croze, who has exten-ded it to a harmonious course of 18 holesover 60 hectares.The 72 par competition course is undoub-

tedly challenging, thanks in parti-cular to the numerous naturalobstacles dotted around itsover 6000 metres: bunkers

guarding the greens, treesand shrubs midway, slopes

and dips and water obstacleswhich sometimes cross theentire fairway.
