What We Do

CICEET Mission

“Develop and apply tools to detect, prevent, andreverse the impacts of coastal pollution andhabitat degradation on coastal ecosystems andcommunities.”

In Practice, We…

Research, design, & administer fundingopportunities that result in practical tools forcoastal manager;

Direct investments in research, demonstration, technology transfer

Build strategic partnerships

Why We Do It

Development Pressure

More than half U.S. population liveswithin 50 miles of a coast.

Rapid poorly planned growth leads tohabitat loss, impaired water quality, water shortages.

Environmental impacts place human, environmental, and economic healthat risk.

Science & innovative technology playa critical role in addressing this issue.

Catalysts are required to help overcomebarriers to the application of scienceand technology to these issues.

Why we do it

Now Climate Change…

Short term: Extreme storms more frequent andintense—erosion, flooding, and damage topublic infrastructure/private property

Long-term: Sea level rise intensifies theseimpacts.

Development-related problems—e.g., nonpointsource pollution—are magnified by climatechange.

Coastal managers not as well-equipped toaddress these challenges as they could be.

Again, science and technology plays a key roleand catalysts are needed!

How We Do It

Needs Assessment

CICEET engages academia, government, private industry, and NGOs to identify the commonchallenges of greatest concern to coastal resource managers.

Technology Gap Analysis

CICEET works with a broadening network to identify how new technology could addresspriority challenges and which obstacles—political, technical, social, regulatory, oreconomic—would prevent the implementation of new tools.

Collaborative Funding Opportunities / Direct Investments

CICEET forges partnerships and designs funding opportunities that engage technologyinnovators and coastal managers to work together to develop effective, practical tools—fromthe identification of a need through technology development, demonstration, and application.

Dissemination

CICEET makes these tools available to coastal managers through demonstration, training, outreach, and an evolving technology utilization program.
