UNICEF works to ensure that people around the world have clean drinking water and proper sanitation services. More than 2.5 billion people live without proper sanitation at any given time, and as a result, more than 1,600 children die each day from diseases spread through unsafe water. UNICEF efforts have given more than 2 billion people access to clean drinking water since 1990 and have significantly reduced the incidence of waterborne diseases over the last quarter of a century. UNICEF uses donated money to provide water purification tablets, oral rehydration salts, and hand pumps to communities in need, and as little as $25 can purify almost 17,000 liters of contaminated water for a community.
