Architects and Specifiers can now gain access to invaluableexpertise in glass engineering through the introduction of a pioneering Architectural handrail and balustrade system. icon VIEU® is an intelligent system solution for structural glass balustrading based on a modular range of handrails and associated fittings. In a complex and predominantlybespoke marketplace, icon VIEU® offers logical predeterminedspecifications for high end structural glass requirements.

Technical Performanceicon VIEU® has been developed in accordancewith the design criteria specified in BS6180:1999and side loading requirements for all building-use categories can be accommodated includingthe 3 kN/m horizontal UDL designated for areassusceptible to overcrowding. Internal andexternal specifications are available as theStainless Steel fittings can be supplied in 304and 316 grade variants. Curved configurationscan be considered and special adaptations ofthe system are often incorporated to suit theindividual needs or preferences of each project.

Supplied, Installedicon VIEU is available Internationally on a supply and installation basis as a specialistArchitectural Handrail & Balustrade packageprocured directly by the Client, Developer or Principle Contractor.

Concealed Fixingsicon endorses positive detailing and with suchemphasis placed on precision it is complimen-tary for fixing screws and bolt heads to bediscretely concealed wherever possible. End caps, cover discs and rosettes feature inthe design of all key components to provide a tidy and tamper proof solution, particularlyappropriate for public and educational buildingapplications.

Clean Linesicon VIEU® is primarily manufactured as a series of machined or cast fittings, mechanicallyconnected together to create a highlyengineered product with precise, clean linesbetween adjoining components. The system has a sharp, sophisticated appearance,unhindered by the presence of unsightly weldsas can often be the case with fabricatedalternatives.

Handrail Ends, BendsHandrails and balustrade toprails generally have stopped or capped ends and mitres areused to change direction whether StainlessSteel or Hardwood is specified. For structuralpurposes a steel core rail is rebated into offsetHardwood balustrade toprails.

Boss Fixing

Positive DetailingThe icon Boss fixing is not only an elegantlyengineered detail but a far simplified structuralconnection compared to the conventionalmethod of containing glass within continuoussteel tracks. The 2-point side fixings neatlyresolve most interface issues, offer a morecommercially attractive solution and facilitateease of panel replacement without disturbingthe surrounding finishes. Boss projections canbe varied whilst vertical and horizontal centresare specified for each project.

Glass Specification12,15,19 or 25 thick toughened glass, eachpanel Kite mark badged in bottom left handcorner to BS 6206 Class A with square cut or nominal radiussed corners, flat arrissed and polished edges all round.

Toughened GlassToughened glass is created by heating annealedglass to a temperature of around 620ºC, thepanels are then quickly ejected from the furnaceand their surface blasted with jets of cooled air. Whilst the surface of the glass is instantlycooled the centre of the panel remains relativelyhot, taking longer for the heat to be dispersed.As the centre gradually cools down it alsocontracts and pulls the outer surfaces inwardscreating permanent compression while thecentre remains under tension. It is theseopposing forces which make toughened glass 4 - 5 times stronger than the same thicknessannealed glass.

In the event of a breakage, toughened glass toBS 6206 Class A fragments into small relativelyharmless pieces with dulled edges, minimisingthe risk of serious injury.

Low Iron GlassWhilst structural glass balustrades are chosenfor their minimalism and visual subtlety it ispossible to reduce their presence even further.Standard clear float glass has an inherent greencast which is more prominent in the thickerglasses required for balustrading. A Low Ironglass is available which offers a noticeablyclearer and almost colourless panel. Samplesand prices are available upon request.

Technical Guidance

Based on BS 6180:1999 and BS 6399:Part 1:1996 the following table offers recommended glass thickness guidelines for general building use categories. Please refer to the relevant British Standards for the full criteria and overall project considerations.

Specification and Finishes

HeatsoakingNickel sulphide inclusions appear infrequently in toughened glass and although this does not usually present any problems, in remotecircumstances they can cause a panel toshatter spontaneously. Nickel and sulphurimpurities can exist within the raw materialsused to make glass and if present in atoughened panel they change state whenheated in the furnace to form nickel sulphidecrystals. Even after the glass has cooled it can be several years before the crystals returnto their original state but in doing so they growby up to 4% and this increase in size can besufficient to cause a stress failure if the inclusionhappens to be in a critical location within theglass panel.

As a precaution the glass can be Heatsoakedwhich involves placing the panels in a specialoven and over a period of several hours,subjecting the glass to a heat of 295ºC. Thisprocess accelerates the change in state of anynickel sulphide crystals and causes these panelsto break in the oven with the remaining panelsbeing less likely to fail in service. Glass used foricon VIEU® can be Heatsoaked and prices areavailable upon request.

Silk Screen Printing12 & 15mm thick glass can be decorated usingceramic paints to RAL or Pantone® colours.Standard manifestations or special designs arescreen printed and then fired onto the panelsurface during the toughening process - pleaseask for further details.

Stainless Steelicon handrails and associated fittings areproduced in 304 grade for internal use and 316 grade Stainless Steel for externalapplications. A refined, brushed satin finish is directionally applied to most componentswhereas tubular elements are radially polished.

Natural Hardwoodsicon offers a contemporary selection of factorypolished and lacquered Hardwood handrails.Other species can be considered upon requestand all Hardwoods used for icon handrails aresupplied from sustainably managed sources.
