Peer Support The Peer Support program will commence next Monday across the school Kindergarten to Year 6.
It has been a very busy and exciting time for Stage 3 as they have prepared for the delivery of the first ‘Get to Know You’ lessons they will run with their peer support group. The peer support leaders will be pairs of students from Year 5 and 6.
A massive thank you to Mrs Watson and Mrs Cowan who have spent considerable time working with the Stage 3 students to strengthen their leadership and group management skills. This responsibility of being a peer support leader will ensure the students learn many valuable lessons for the future as they progress into high school.
The overall aim of implementing a Peer Support program across the school is to firstly develop the leadership skills of our senior students. Secondly, the aim of the program is to enhance connections and relationships between all students. This initiative is directly related to our school’s strategic plan around wellbeing.
Peer support leaders will lead groups of up to 10 students from Kindergarten to Year 4.
The leaders work to prepare for the lessons and activities and then will participate in a debrief session the day after the sessions. The aim of the debrief session is to listen to feedback and continually reflect on their performance and leadership skills.
After the initial getting to know you sessions, the school will begin the module called ‘Moving Forward’ which focuses on resilience.
The experiences in this module help children identify their qualities and strengths, develop skills, respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges. In the first session, the children will establish connections with the other members of the group and develop a group agreement to enable them to work well together. The children will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses.
You may wish to speak with your children about what they can do to take an active role in their Peer Support group.

National Simultaneous StorytimeLCPS was one of over 11 000 locations across Australia that participated in National Simultaneous Storytime last Wednesday when 1,138,889 readers across Australia read Matt Cosgrove’s book, Alpacas with Maracas.
May is National Family Reading Month and we celebrated with grandparents reading stories with our students. Many took the opportunity to visit our Book Fair and purchase books. Not only do students have some wonderful books to read at home but we are able to purchase $1008 worth of books for our school library. Look out for the new books that will available to borrow soon.
Election Day Volunteers A massive thank you to our wonderful volunteers who gave up their time to coordinate and work at the election day BBQ and cake stall.
These food stalls were a hit and the yummy food was delicious.
Without the assistance of our community through the work of the P and C the fabulous fundraising for our school would not be possible.
The funds raised go towards valuable and much needed educational resources to support the learning of each and every one of our students.
Thank you again.

PSSA LNC Cross CountryOn Monday 27 May 26 students from Lake Cathie Public School travelled up to Warwick Park Racecourse in Kempsey to compete in the 2019 Lower North Coast PSSA Cross Country trials. The weather started cool and overcast - perfect for running, however the wind soon picked up and the sun came out which made for harder running conditions.
All our competitors did a fantastic job over a tough track and when they weren’t running showed great school spirit by cheering on their friends. A special mention for Breanna for making it in the top 10 in her age group and CONGRATULATIONS to Ben Spencer who came 2nd, Brenton Mance who came 5th and Locke Williamson who came 6th in their age groups. They are now off to the North Coast Championships at Nana Glen on Friday 21 June. Well done!
Many thanks to all the parents for travelling up and helping set up and pack up and Mr Baker who spent the day cheering our runners along all day trackside, the students really appreciated your support. The students behaved beautifully and represented our school with grit, determination and amazing spirit. It was a pleasure to be involved in a wonderful day.

Stage 2 Koala Hospital Excursion
Since 1788, approximately 80% of Koala habitat has been decimated. Of the remaining 20% almost none is protected and most occurs on privately-owned land. People have favoured the rich fertile lands along the eastern seaboard to have their farms and urban developments. Unfortunately, this is where the majority of Koalas are already living because they also like to live in trees which are growing in fertile soils. Bush fires, diseases, introduced species and cars are all having their impact on koalas in Australia, to the point where they are in danger of becoming an extinct species.
Students in Year 3 and 4 have been investigating our local koalas and gaining an understanding of the threats. Students traveled to Port Macquarie on Tuesday this week to gather some background knowledge of the contribution the Koala Hospital is making towards saving the koala. We visited the permanent residents that suffer from blindness and injury due to disease, dog attacks and cars. Our students are working with the Koala Smart project and trying to solve the problem: How can we save the koala?
In addition to visiting the Koala Hospital, Year 3 and 4 also walked part of the coastal walk between Town Beach and Fylnns Beach. We were able view some of the GeoTrail at Rocky Beach that features 500 million year old rock formations! Year 4 was lucky enough to spot some whales off in the distance, who are migrating at the moment to warmer waters.
Coming up is the Koala Festival in Port Macquarie. Please check out the flyer about the festival and think about how you might help raise awareness about declining numbers of koalas.
Grandparents DayLast Wednesday saw the students at Lake Cathie Public School welcome their grandparents for what turned out to be a wonderful morning. The sun was shining and despite the smoky haze we had a wonderful turnout.
Students loved having the opportunity to perform a whole school song ‘A Million Dreams’ as well read out some beautiful written pieces of work about their grandparents . The whole school and our guests then sat back to enjoy taking part in the 2019 Simultaneous Story Time event with a reading of ‘Alpacas and Maracas’. Multiple generations then took part in a story sharing session, spending time together chatting and exchanging stories.
The canteen put on a wonderful Morning Tea spread of scones, cakes and biscuits and it was lovely to see the children playing games and enjoying some quality time with their grandparents.
Grandparents are a vital link in our school community. Many take a daily role in our students lives while others enjoy their grandchildren from further afield. These relationships are special and at Lake Cathie Public School we love having the opportunity to show you how much we appreciate your support.
Thank you so much for joining us for our biggest Grandparents Day celebration to date. We hope you enjoyed it as much as the teachers and students did. If you think you would like to volunteer your time to help our students even for a short time each week, please let us know. In the spirit of community and sharing it is always wonderful to be able to provide some extra time for reading and building social skills to our children.
