Unilorin and the language question

As the world marked the International Mother Language Day last February 21, it is gratifying to note that the recent capacity

building of the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, University of Ilorin, to be able to offer instruction in Hausa and Igbo, along with the already well-established Yoruba programme, is casting a right stone in the right direction. On the basis of that development, the authorities of the better by far University deserve a pat on the back for not only doing the needful but also sending a signal to other institutions to follow suit.

Apart from the Nigerian languages, including Arabic, another robust programme in the University which many assume to be foreign, the University also teaches German and Spanish to some level, not to talk of the full-fledged French and English disciplines. There is every indication pointing towards having the Chinese Mandarin in future as the University is poised to position itself to new global realities. What is incontestable is that the more the languages available to an individual, the better such an individual becomes as a global citizen.

Though often taken for granted, language is the most important of all man's possessions as without it, he cannot think much not to talk of creating development and civilisation. It is the major distinguishing factor between human beings and all other creatures. In other words, to imagine a world without language is to imagine the unimaginable as human beings attain their uniqueness not only because they are homo sapiens but also because they are homo loquens (talking beings). As human beings, we live inexorably through “languaging”.

Unfortunately, as important as language is, mother tongue especially, it is often treated with contempt among the Nigerian policy makers and even the vast majority. There is an obsession among us to see the world through the linguistic lens of others only. It is not surprising that the state of development in Nigeria is directly proportional to our language development status.

A popular myth is that Nigeria can attain development through speaking the language of others. A cursory look at the world reveals that development is grafted in the cultural and linguistic tradition of nations. Hardly will one find a truly developed country, from the Anglo-American axis to the Asian Tigers, that undermines its languages as Nigeria does and it is high time we changed for the better.

Prof. Chinua Achebe, who does not need any introduction, attended the 1981 Tokyo Colloquium and

reported “a particularly strong impact” that the submission of one Prof. Kinchiro Toba of Waseda University had on him against the norm in Nigeria.

“My grandfather graduated from the University of Tokyo at the beginning of 1880s, his notebooks were full of English. May father graduated from the same university in 1920 and half of his notes were filled with English. When I graduated a generation later my notes were all in Japanese. So...it took three generations for us to consume western civilization via the means of our own language,” Prof. Toba was reported to have said.

Instead of promoting Nigerian languages the same way other progressive nations are doing of theirs, the three major Nigerian languages are now optional subjects for senior secondary students. The implication of this is that in few years time, we are bracing for a generation that is not literate in Nigerian languages as Nigeria continues to contribute substantially to the 7,000 languages worldwide that are “at risk of disappearing in the next 100 years”.

It is not uncommon nowadays to find Nigerian undergraduates, including those of the University of Ilorin, who speak only one language, English, and not one of the listed 646 languages spoken as first languages in Nigeria, based on the work of Dr. Uwe Seibert of the University of Jos. Ironically, the mastery of the English language, for which we have almost totally abandoned ours, is also grossly imperfect at both the spoken and the written levels, making it a case of double jeopardy.

Many educated and not-so-educated Nigerians are guilty of this emergent trend of dispossessing their children of Nigerian languages. “Don't speak vernacular to my children!”, one parent bellowed to a visitor who said, “Bawo ni?” (How are you?) to the children of a Professor. The same behaviour is characteristic of the not-so-educated ones who believe that education consists of being able to speak English only and then labour hard to send their children to “good” schools in distant places where English is the alpha and omega, leading to the swelling population of “Naija-saxons”, Nigerians who speak the English language only as their mother tongue, yet imperfectly despite their best of efforts towards having a native-like control.

The way to go is that charted by the University of Ilorin, and of recent too, the Nigerian Television Authority, which now has dedicated NTA Hausa, NTA Igbo and NTA Yoruba channels on StarTimes because when the stakes are down, as our people say, “Ten eyes are not like one's own”. Nigerian languages are ours.
