Patriot’s Day-April 19. Patriots were colonists who wanted independence from British rule. Most hoped to find peaceful ways to settle their differences with England. When the British decided to look for Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were hiding in Concord, Paul Revere and Billy Dawes rode through the night warning other Patriots in New England. The American Revolution began when the first shots were fired at Lexington on April 19, 1775. Each side said the other fired first. Patriots' Day was established to mark the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Enacted August 30, 2001, from the 2001

Laws of Wisconsin, Act 16 budget bill.

Prisoner of War Remembrance Day-April 9, commemorates the date during World War II when the largest number of Americans were captured in the Conquest of Ba-taan. Gubernatorial proclamation shall suitably recognize those who suffered captivity in foreign countries while in active service with the U.S. armed forces and request that some por-tion of the day be used for solemn contemplation on the plight of those who have been held prisoners of war. Enacted Nov.

29, 2001 from the 2001 Laws of Wisconsin, Act 20 budget bill.

8th Graders can start bringing in one baby picture and a recent photo for the end of the year PowerPoint. Do some Spring Break cleaning!!!! Pictures are due no later than Friday, May 8.

MATH MEET Congratulations to the Math Meet teams for a wonderful

showing as they represented our school at this year's Math

Meet. Each meet lasted one half-day. Fifth and

sixth grades met in the morning and the seventh

and eighth grades met in the afternoon.

All the students worked to earn team points by problem

solving without calculators, doing consumer math, com-

pleting geometric reasoning questions and doing mental

math. The final event included working together on a pro-

ject as a team that was worth an extra 100 points. The

questions were extremely challenging, our students worked

together well and we very proud of everyone.

Special congratulations to Nick Sikorski for earning second

place in the fifth and sixth grade division at this year's Math

Meet!

The Badger Exam 3-8:

A Wisconsin Smarter Balanced Assessment

Students in grades 3-8 will take the Badger Exam online

during the month of April. This new assessment will be

used to gauge how well students are mastering the Wis-

consin College and Career Ready Standards in English

language arts (ELA) and mathematics.

The Badger exam 3-8 gauges your child’s achievement

compared to other students in the state and against other

students in states who use similar Smarter Balanced As-

sessments. Along with report cards, school wide assess-

ments, and other information about your child’s progress

in school, the results from the Badger Exam 3-8 provide

insight into how well your child is doing on a broad

measure of achievement.

Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment

The DLM assessment assesses the academic progress of

students with significant cognitive disabilities in the sub-

ject areas of English language arts and mathematics. The

DLM system is designed to map a student’s learning

throughout the year by using items and tasks that are em-

bedded in day-to-day instruction.

How can you help your child when it comes to taking these tests?

Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before every test.

Provide a healthy breakfast on test day.

Have your child dress comfortably and ar-rive at school on time.

Send your child to school with parting words of encouragement.

Remind your child to read all directions and consider all answers.

Remind your child to check answers prior to completing the test.

Please refrain from scheduling trips, ap-pointments during testing time.

Do you have an old graduation gown from UGHS or UGES laying around the house? If so, please consider donating it so it can used by another student. Gowns may be dropped off in the front office. Thank you!

In honor of Earth Day UGES will be participat-ing in many special Earth Day activities that week. Keep in-formed on these and other upcoming events in the Daily Ex-press on the school website .

Dear School Counselor,

How can I help my child if they are depressed?

Depression is the most common mental health problem in the

United States. Depression is not a bad mood or even feeling

down or sad, these feelings are normal in kids. It may be de-

pression if the mood lingers for an extended period of time and

limits one’s ability to function normally. Individuals who are

struggling with depression often feel hopeless about every-

thing and feel they are “no good” or worthless.

Signs you can look for if you think someone you care about

could be depressed are:

Negative feelings and mood for extended period of time

Negative thinking, feelings of hopelessness

Low energy motivation and fatigue

Difficulty concentrating and focusing

Physical symptoms such as stomach pain, headache,

sleeping problems, and change in appetite

Ways you can prevent depression and help those that are de-

pressed:

Stay current on your medical check ups

Encourage talking and support

Exercise 15-30 minutes a day

Eat healthy and provide body with good nutrition

Identify and address troubles, but do not dwell on them

Try to look on the bright side, think positively and replace

the negative thoughts

April 13 – American’s Creed Day

I believe in the United States of

America as a Government of the

people, by the people, for the people; whose just pow-

ers are derived from the consent of the governed; a

democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many

sovereign States; a perfect union, one and insepara-

ble; established upon those principles of freedom,

equality, justice, and humanity for which American

patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love

it, to support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to re-

spect its Flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

American's Creed Day is a Wisconsin Public School

Observance Day recognizing the American's Creed,

written in 1917 by William Tyler Page, a messenger in

the U.S. House of Representatives. His essay was

judged the "best summary of American political faith"

in a national contest.

ber of points are:

Arbor Day

Arbor Day is Wisconsin Public School

observance day which is a day set apart

for planting trees. All states in the United

States celebrate it. National Arbor Day is the last

Friday in April. Many other countries also cele-

brate Arbor Day by planting trees, or they have

other special days or weeks for tree planting.

Arbor Day began in Nebraska. Julius Sterling

Morton, a newspaper publisher, realized that

trees would enrich the soil and conserve moisture

in it. Through his efforts, April 10, 1872, was set

aside as Nebraska's first Arbor Day. The Nebras-

ka Legislature later made Arbor Day a legal holi-

day and changed its date to April 22, Morton’s

birthday. From World Book encyclopedia

A huge thank you to Mrs. Dresang for arranging such an amazing project! Be

sure to stop by and view the finished mural or find your tile. The mural is located

just inside the main entrance foyer. What a wonderful addition to our school!
