Compiled by Barry Waugh 1 Union Seminary Review, Author Index January 2015 The following is a partial index for the serial published by Union Theological Seminary, Virginia, from 1889 to 1946, however the index does not go beyond 1922 because the index was compiled using digital out-of-copyright issues. For the entire run, the periodical was published using two successive titles. The first title, The Union Seminary Magazine, began with vol.1, no. 1, for October-November 1889, and then continued through vol. 24, no. 4. When the name was changed, the word Review was exchanged for Magazine beginning with vol. 25, no. 1, for October-November 1913. The Union Seminary Review continued until its last issue, vol. 57, no. 4, was published for August 1946. Note that the volume numbers were continued in sequence even though the title of the journal was changed. This index is provided in PDF because it gives full text search capabilities and precludes the need for a title index while giving the researcher the ability to search using key words in lieu of a subject index. In the following list of volumes included in this index an asterisk indicates that the titles for that volume were compiled from the text on Hathi Trust. The other volumes were compiled using downloaded PDFs from other sites. The volumes in this index include32, 31, 30, 29, 28, 27*, 26, 25, 24 [vol. used had two copies of no. 2 and no copy of no. 3], 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, [14 unavailable], 13, 12, 11*, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and [1 is unavailable]. The book reviews have not been indexed unless they appeared in the article section of the journal, but in many cases there is an index in the individual volumes that includes the reviews. Book reviews usually are published within a few years of the release of a new book, so a scan of the volume indices will show whether a review of the desired book has been included in the Union Seminary publication. In vol. 10, no. 1, there is a section of articles concerning the dedication of the new Union Seminary campus in Richmond in 1898 These pieces have been annotated so that a search for new campus dedicationwill list all the dedication articles that are listed in the index. Vol. 16, no. 3, was almost entirely dedicated to the Conference of the Eastern Section of Seminary YMCAs. In this index, each report, lecture, and other document entry concerned with the YMCA conference has been annotated with YMCA-Conf.which facilitates searching for all the conference entries. Note that some other entries in the index are noted as YMCA, so search the full YMCA-Conf.to find the entries for the conference and just YMCAfor a full listing. The seminary’s celebration of its centennial in October 1912 resulted in the publication in vol. 24, no. 1, several articles, biographies, and photographs produced for the occasion. A search of the index using the search term 24:1will list the items printed in the centennial issue. More generally, if researchers want to locate all the articles for a particular volume, then searching the volume number followed by a colon, i.e. 17:, will bring up all the articles for that volume, and if all the articles of a particular issue are desired, then searching the volume, colon, and issue number, i.e. 17:3, will list all the articles for that issue. However, note that in the case of volume numbers in a search using 7:will bring up volumes, 7, 17, and 27. To avoid this result search 7:with a space in front of the 7. In the PDF version of volume 24 from Google Books, issue number 2 is included twice and there is not an issue no. 3. The indexing for 24:3 was accomplished using the table of contents found in vol. 24; the compiler did not actually look at issue 24:3 in hard copy of digital form.

Union Seminary Review, Author Index

January 2015

The following is a partial index for the serial published by Union Theological Seminary,

Virginia, from 1889 to 1946, however the index does not go beyond 1922 because the index was

compiled using digital out-of-copyright issues. For the entire run, the periodical was published

using two successive titles. The first title, The Union Seminary Magazine, began with vol.1, no.

1, for October-November 1889, and then continued through vol. 24, no. 4. When the name was

changed, the word Review was exchanged for Magazine beginning with vol. 25, no. 1, for

October-November 1913. The Union Seminary Review continued until its last issue, vol. 57, no.

4, was published for August 1946. Note that the volume numbers were continued in sequence

even though the title of the journal was changed. This index is provided in PDF because it gives

full text search capabilities and precludes the need for a title index while giving the researcher

the ability to search using key words in lieu of a subject index.

In the following list of volumes included in this index an asterisk indicates that the titles

for that volume were compiled from the text on Hathi Trust. The other volumes were compiled

using downloaded PDFs from other sites. The volumes in this index include—32, 31, 30, 29, 28,

27*, 26, 25, 24 [vol. used had two copies of no. 2 and no copy of no. 3], 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18,

17, 16, 15, [14 unavailable], 13, 12, 11*, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and [1 is unavailable].

The book reviews have not been indexed unless they appeared in the article section of the

journal, but in many cases there is an index in the individual volumes that includes the reviews.

Book reviews usually are published within a few years of the release of a new book, so a scan of

the volume indices will show whether a review of the desired book has been included in the

Union Seminary publication.

In vol. 10, no. 1, there is a section of articles concerning the dedication of the new Union

Seminary campus in Richmond in 1898 These pieces have been annotated so that a search for

“new campus dedication” will list all the dedication articles that are listed in the index.

Vol. 16, no. 3, was almost entirely dedicated to the Conference of the Eastern Section of

Seminary YMCAs. In this index, each report, lecture, and other document entry concerned with

the YMCA conference has been annotated with “YMCA-Conf.” which facilitates searching for

all the conference entries. Note that some other entries in the index are noted as YMCA, so

search the full “YMCA-Conf.” to find the entries for the conference and just “YMCA” for a full

listing.

The seminary’s celebration of its centennial in October 1912 resulted in the publication in

vol. 24, no. 1, several articles, biographies, and photographs produced for the occasion. A search

of the index using the search term “24:1” will list the items printed in the centennial issue. More

generally, if researchers want to locate all the articles for a particular volume, then searching the

volume number followed by a colon, i.e. 17:, will bring up all the articles for that volume, and if

all the articles of a particular issue are desired, then searching the volume, colon, and issue

number, i.e. 17:3, will list all the articles for that issue. However, note that in the case of volume

numbers in a search using “7:” will bring up volumes, 7, 17, and 27. To avoid this result search

“7:” with a space in front of the 7.

In the PDF version of volume 24 from Google Books, issue number 2 is included twice

and there is not an issue no. 3. The indexing for 24:3 was accomplished using the table of

contents found in vol. 24; the compiler did not actually look at issue 24:3 in hard copy of digital

form.

In some of the volumes, there are lists of graduates and new students, but these have not

been included in the index because of Moore and Scherer’s Centennial General Catalogue of the

Trustees, Officers, Professors and Alumni of Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. 1807-

1907, Richmond: Whittet & Shepperson, c1907. For the years after 1907, the volumes may be

consulted. In the earlier volumes alumni news was included.

The editors of the Union publication were concerned after the first few years to keep the

articles fairly short and not highly technical. There are some exceptions, but it appears the target

group for sales was probably pastors and informed laymen more than academics. Many of the

authors for the journals were Union faculty members, but other authors were published which

were most often alumni of the seminary or in some way associated with its work.

The Union Seminary journals are a neglected source for the study of Presbyterian and

Reformed history and it is hoped that this index will facilitate the use of PDF volumes that are

currently available. Even though Union Seminary was at the time of publication a PCUS

seminary, a scan of the authors will show that it had strong connections to the PCUSA.

1 A few of the earlier entries for Rice have a “Jr.” added to his name. His father was also named Theron Hall. It

may be that Rice’s father had died by the time he became a professor at Union Seminary, so he probably dropped
