On October 21, 2015 seventeen juniors and two seniors were inducted into the Aquilifer Chapter of the National Honor Society. Membership in this organization is based on the following qualities: Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service. Current members include Connor Coleman, Jasmine Jackson, Natalie Lynch, Nicole Marquart, Angela Pacelli, Madelyn Romeo, Connor Siracusa, Maria Staehr, Geneice Thomas and Kristina Wilmot. At the evening induction ceremony, congratulatory comments were offered by Board of Education member Jeffrey Culver. Principal Chuck Walker administered the National Honor Society Pledge. Throughout the school year, the National Honor Society members volunteer their time to various school and community projects including school-wide blood drives, highway clean up, the Senior Citizen Luncheon and raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In addition, each member is required to complete a minimum of twenty-five hours of community service. The new National Junior Honor Society members were inducted on Oct. 22. This year, the group will organize a number of chapter community service projects as well as invest fifteen hours each in individual projects.

Greetings: What a great start we have had to our new school year! Being in classrooms and watching our students engage in powerful learning experiences during these opening weeks has only solidified my belief that Union Springs is a great place for our students to learn and grow. Whether it is our third graders exploring musical instruments, our high school students building a fish/aquaponics

lab, seeing our AJ students prepare for their musical, watching Pre-Kindergarten students work with iPads to develop early language skills, or exploring the basics of the metric system in grade four, our students are working hard to meet the challenges of our rigorous school program. While we continue to marvel at all of the goodness that occurs in our school buildings every day, we also continue to work to shift the culture regarding student attendance. In the first 35 days of school this year, there was an astonishing 1,162 absences from school among our 840 students. This number represents full-day student absences. While assuredly there are times when a missed day of school due to illness or an emergency is warranted, missing that many instructional days in the first 35 school days suggests that we have some work before us not only to create engaging learning opportunities for our students, but also to share with our school community the importance of being at school every day. To foster meaningful learning outcomes for our students, to raise their level of achievement, and to create lifelong opportunities, students need a sound education. We are working each school day to raise our standards and programs and we ask that you join us, by helping our students come to school on a more consistent basis. Let us know how we can best support you and your children so that they show up for school on time each school day. I know that by working together, we can help to ensure that our district continues to promote excellence in student learning. We want your child to be successful in school! The fall season is in full swing with dwindling daylight and cooler temperatures. Soon we’ll see all of the holiday lights and the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping.

October had a number of significant events. National Honor Society inducted nineteen new members. Congratulations to all of the new inductees as well as all of the current members of National Honor Society. October also brought an end to the fall sports season. While there were some high and low points, our students never gave up and continued to work hard all season. Their pride and diligence is a true reflection on this community and the influences that have shaped these students over the years.

October also brought an end to the first marking period. If your child is struggling, make sure they stay after with their teachers to get extra help. This year at the Middle/High School, two teachers will be available most days

Katie Graham, 10th grader, is a member of the National Geographic Kids My Shot community, which is a moderated photo community where young photographers can tell their stories through pictures. It is a place to share a love of photography and inspire other kids to care about the planet.

National Geographic Kids teamed up with Pharrell Williams, who wrote and produced the song “Happy,” and My Shot members had the opportunity to enter a Happy Contest by uploading their photos of things that make them happy. Katie entered the contest several months ago, and her photo was selected by Pharrell Williams as his favorite and published in the September 2015 issue of National Geographic Kids Magazine. In the issue, Pharrell says “I chose this photo because while every moment in life is not always happy, if you look closely, you’ll always see the sun shining through.”

Dear Parents & Guardians, Students, and Community Members,

The first marking period in the Middle School certainly went by fast as we are closing in on the end of the second marking period now too! Students are working hard to acclimate themselves to the Middle School, and we are making a great deal of progress. For the 2015-2016 school year, we are focused on student engagement, attendance, achievement and culture.

The percentage of whole day absences for the first marking period showed a 25% decrease compared to the percentage of absences in the first marking period for the 2014-2015 school year. While this is positive, Middle School students still tallied over 100 days of absences in the first marking period. The Middle School years are a key time of transition for students to build the skills necessary to be successful in high school and in life after graduation. Attending school every possible day is a key component of this success.

Discipline was down 48% in the first marking period compared to the 2014-2015 school year. The number of students who are ineligible dropped from 21 in the first eligibility period (weeks 1-3) of this year to 16 students in the second eligibility period (weeks 4-6). These numbers represent the efforts our Middle School staff and students are putting in, but we need your continued support to keep the momentum going forward.

A key element of achievement and academic success is how often and how successfully our students are reading. At this point in a Middle School student’s education, it is important that they read from multiple sources as well

as in school and at home. Picking out a certain author or genre is a great way for our students to increase their interest in reading. Both our seventh and eighth grade ELA classes incorporate an independent reading program as well as working through books as a class. I encourage you to talk with your child about their reading habits and discuss any questions or concerns they may have about reading. Additionally, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions about reading resources or interventions that you can incorporate at home.

Upcoming events in the Middle School include the Middle School/High School Holiday Chorus Concert on December 14th and the Middle School/High School Holiday Band Concert on December 17th. Also new for the Middle School is the 3-5 after school program. This program provides students with an opportunity to work with teachers on homework and other assignments that they may need assistance with or more time to complete. The list of staff members staying from 3-5 is posted outside of the Middle School office each day. Additionally, you can contact Ms. Mills in the Middle School office for a list of future dates.

LETTER FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL


On and off the field and court, there were several noteworthy accomplishments for our athletic teams and student athletes at Union Springs this fall.

We started the season off hosting the 1st Annual Jim Cufari Kick-Off Classic, a soccer tournament that featured teams from all over Central New York. This tournament was designed to celebrate the memory of Coach Jim Cufari, longtime coach at Union Springs back in the 1980’s and 90’s and a member of the Union Springs Athletic Hall of Fame. There were a total of 7 schools involved in the tournament. We hope to make this an annual event and that it will gain interest and popularity in future years.

We also hosted our first night games this fall. With temporary lighting around our main field, our Girls Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer and Varsity Football teams all played under the lights! These were great community events enjoyed by all in attendance, and we hope to expand on this venture next year.

Of course our biggest event of the season was Homecoming! Games were mostly played against our friendly rivals to the South, the Southern Cayuga Chiefs. We returned the favor a week later and played in their homecoming games. As always, everyone fought hard with team spirit throughout all of the games.

We had several teams complete their regular seasons UNDEFEATED! Both the Girls and Boys Cross Country teams completed perfect 7-0 regular season records and were the OHSL Division Champions. The JV Girls Soccer team finished the season 16-0, continuing their winning streak from the previous year, and now they have won 25 consecutive games! Not only were they one of our most successful teams, they were also one of the most traveled. With very few league opponents fielding JV teams, both girls and boys traveled from Elmira to

Lyons and almost every point in between. Last, but not least, the JV Volleyball team finished their regular season with a perfect 14-0 record, winning the IAC North Small School Division and continuing on to face Tioga for the overall IAC championship.

Many of our athletes were honored for their individual accomplishments as well. Leading the way for the Varsity Girls Soccer team was Senior Jasmine Jackson who was named to the IAC League 1st Team. Also receiving honors were Junior Erica Saroodis and Freshmen Morgan Lupo who were both recognized on the IAC League 2nd Team. Representing Union Springs/Port Byron in the Exceptional Senior Game were Jasmine Jackson and Nicole Marquart. The Varsity Boys Soccer team was led by Senior Meyson Paz, Senior Noah Morhiser and Junior Logan Enge who were all named to the IAC League 1st Team. Junior Jacob Jirinec, Junior Ian Park, Senior Ryan Cabal and Junior Austin Quick were all named to the IAC League 2nd Team. Representing the Wolves at the Exceptional Senior Contest were Mayson Paz, Noah Morhiser and Ryan Cabal. The Varsity Volleyball team was led by Junior IAC League 1st Teamer, Taylor Gilbert. Also receiving individual honors are Emily Button and Bre Gulbe who were selected for the IAC League 2nd Team. The Cross Country teams also received many post season awards. Leading the girls team were Hannah Yorkey and Liz Colgan who were both OHSL Patriot League 1st Team All-League. On the 2nd team were Autumn Reinhardt and Madelyn Romeo. The boys were led by 1st team All-League Senior Jordan Anthony. On the 2nd team were Jared Wilmot and Zach Balog, and an Honorable Mention went to Jon Jackson.

We are very proud of our athletic accomplishments this fall, and we hope to continue and improve upon our performances next year. The merger in many sports with Port Byron has enabled more athletes to play at appropriate levels of competition, and we feel that this will lead our athletes and teams towards many future successes. The first few months have flown by as our days are always filled with curiosity and learning! Our building is adopting the Growth Mindset this year as we help each student learn how to help themselves be the best learner they can be!! Everyone is encouraged to really work hard on accomplishing at least one short-term and one long-term goal. Our moments of reflection on “Future Fridays” keep our goals fresh in our mind.

Students are also starting their “Wellness Wednesday” mornings off with some stretching and basic exercises. Lunch Recess is scheduled every day, and students will continue to go outside all year long [even throughout the winter, temperature permitting]. We always encourage our students to “Eat Well, Play Hard and Read Often.”

It is very important that all of our students attend school as much as they can! Students who are absent from school miss out on valuable instruction and practice... and all of the fun! Here are a few highlights from the first three months of school: *All homerooms successfully completed an Ecosystem Challenge the first week of school. Students were given map coordinates and asked to identify the type of ecosystem found at that location. Classes worked together to create an informational poster, and points were awarded for each animal and plant identified as living in that ecosystem. Additional points were earned for identifying a threat to the ecosystem as well as a solution to help protect the environment.

*5th and 6th graders all participated in a great field trip to Wells College and aboard the Floating Classroom. 6th graders also traveled to Emerson Park to be a part of the annual Conservation Field Days.

*We were excited to welcome Mr. Cooper, the new technology teacher, to our school this year. Mr. Cooper travels to AJ every day to implement STEM Time! Each homeroom benefits from these hands-on, technology-related activities! *In an effort to enhance our PM Zone activities, we have started a Spanish Club in cooperation with Wells College. Students are not only learning to speak a little bit of Spanish but are also learning about the many countries around the world that speak Spanish.

*We are also running a LEGO® League Team for the first time! Students are challenged to work cooperatively with their teammates to program a robot to complete a series of challenges within 2 ½ minutes. The students prioritized which tasks they wanted to tackle and how many points they

wanted to earn. LEGO® chose a “trash” theme for the poster component – challenging the students to identify a problem and offer a solution. The students recently took a field trip to two different trash centers to help them fully understand everything related to “trash” and to define what problem they would like to tackle.

*This year’s Read for the Record selection was Not Norman: A Goldfish Story. School Library Journal describes it best, “A sweet story that could be used as a springboard to discussion of the pitfalls of making snap judgments about pets — or people.”

*Our Trick or Trot was held on a beautiful fall day – everyone finished with a great sense of accomplishment.

*The Pre-K – 6 PTO Walkathon raised over $10,000 – a HUGE thank you to the community for your tremendous support!

*We welcomed guests on Visitation Day, Fire Prevention, Grand Friends Day, Parent Teacher Conferences, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, and Open House – thanks for showing your support and interest in our school.

PRE-K & KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT

We are off and running through another school year, and the students at Cayuga have settled in to a routine of hard work, daily use of iPads and bucket filling!

A beautiful sound has been resonating through the cafeteria on Wednesdays as Instrumental Music started in late September for our 3rd grade students. This program has given each student exposure to all of the various instruments available. In late January, students will be allowed to choose which instrument they would like to continue playing.

We have had a number of successful events already this year. Fire Prevention Day in October featured our local volunteer firemen and women sharing fire safety tips with our students. Also in October, our annual Pre-K – 6 Walkathon raised enough money to sustain our PTO budget for the entire year, and we thank everyone who volunteered their time and/or made a donation! Throughout the month of November, Cayuga Elementary students were able to collect over 400 canned goods and nonperishable items for our local food pantry.

Every week, we continue to recognize our bucket fillers through our Bucket Filling Program. The program is designed around doing the right thing for oneself and for each other. Students are nominated throughout the week by an adult, and each Friday, students who are recognized get a star placed on the wall in the main hallway. Stop in and check out our wall of stars next time you are in the building!

Parent conferences were well attended this fall. Thank you to all of our parents for making a commitment, meeting with teachers and attending school events.

The Booster Club has been busy this fall. Our annual chicken BBQ held on Homecoming Weekend was a great success. Thank you to the athletes and parents who volunteered to work that day. The “Hut” was open for many of our home fall sporting events. Additional thanks go to students and adults who volunteered their time so that we could be open as much as possible. In order to provide this service at ALL home events, we are always in need of more volunteers. We will once again be providing concessions during our home basketball games. Please let us know if you would be willing to volunteer. Also, please show your Wolves Pride by supporting our sales!

Attention Class of 1966: The district would like to reach out to you for a future newsletter and district article. We would also like to personally invite you to the Spring 2016 graduation as part of your 50th year reunion. Please email Jessica Luisi at [email protected] for more information.

Our fundraising efforts allow us to provide camp scholarships for interested students as well as all the awards given at the Athletic Awards Ceremonies. Please consider attending a meeting to see how you can become a part of this. We meet on the third Monday of each month at 7pm in the High School Art Room.
