2. Write a compare or contrast essay about any two unique buildings of your choice. You
need to choose existing building and their location.
When most of us think about unique buildings, we have the images of strange and
sometimes oblivious design or shape of a building, something which is not common. A
unique building can be either an old or a new one. In comparison to the Leaning Tower of
Pisa built in 1399 and the Capital Gate in 2011. What make them unique? The reason why
these infrastructure is unique, it’s because of the unique concepts used by these talented
person who has designed it. It’s like a gift of God to get inspired of these kinds of ideas of
how to design this infrastructure like this. Those people who are actually architects, who
derived their inspiration from nature which is perfect in its form, the creation of God.
However the two unique buildings which i have selected to compare and contrast are the
Leaning Tower of Pisa found in the ‘square of miracle’ among the representative
monuments in the city of Pisa, Italia and the other one is Capital Gate is Abu Dhabi, just 15
minutes from the International Airport of United Arabia Emirates. Both of them have the
characteristics of Leaning tower and their out breathing shape make them unique.
Lets up go through the Capital Gate, which is the more contemporary version of the
Leaning Tower of Pisa. They do have the same characteristics but in contrast to the one
which is found in United Arabia Emirates it is the most splendid and outstanding one due to
its high quality iconic style. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is an architectural structure in the
medieval time whereas the CAPITAL Gate is a 5-star hotel. It is distinguish by an impressive
steel and glass facade with a striking organic form, a shape of a funnel whereas the Tower of
Pisa looks like a wedding cake in a circular design made up of white marble. The Capital Gate
is 160 metre or 520 feet and has 35 stories. It is the tallest building in Abu Dhabi whereas
the Leaning Tower of Pisa which is only 60 metre and has only around 8 stories. Compare to
the Leaning of Pisa, the Capital Gate features an 18° incline to the west that is four times
than the leaning tower in Italia. In June 2010, the Guinness book of world records certified
Capital Gate as the “World’s furthest leaning man-made tower”.
Both towers have great differences in appearance but have the same characteristics of a
leaning tower. The Capital Gate’s interior and exterior are worth to be for royal families due
to its breathtaking accommodations and criteria in comparison to the Tower of Pisa which is
a medieval architecture and is now just a tourist attraction. The basement of the Capital
Gate sits on top of a 7-foot-deep concrete base with a dense mesh of reinforced steel which
above has a distribution of 490 piles that have been drilled 100 feet underground so that to
resist all type of wind, seismic pressures and gravitational laws due to the concept of the
building. However the consists of 15 arches made up of white marbles and each storey
consists of 30 arches that surround and reinforced the tower. But still the tower is slightly
curved even with the attempts of various architects to prevent it from leaning more or
falling down. In the 1920’s the foundations of the tower were injected with cement grouting
that has stabilized the tower to some extent. This is why it is considered as a miracle of
medieval engineering as the leaning tower is still stand.
The Capital Gate has a cantilevered tea lounge and an open air pool deck, which
provides a unique occupation on the skyline of Abu Dhabi. The hotel entrance canopy is
made up of a sculptural stainless steel goes from front to the low level which acts as a solar
shading device for the infrastructure. A Free form internal atrium with a dynamic glass roof
which brings natural light and contribute to a deep space into the tower. The skyscrapers
also have some requirements to conserve energy for example the external lighting is
designed to minimise both light pollution energy consumption, based on a combination of
low level landscape lighting with facade comprising a net of compact LED lights integrated
into the design of the glazing system. Due to its strange design of each hotel room and its
unique in size and shape and also due to the spirals upwards and outwards the tower is
widens. However for the Tower of Pisa whose shape is like a massive wedding cake knocked
by a clumsy giant monster. These concepts make these buildings unique in their own way.
To conclude, I would say that a unique building is not just certified by architects or the
person working in the field of construction, but it is also due to the contribution of the
public in general to share their opinion. From this point of view the infrastructure can be
considered as a unique one. However the place where a unique building is built has a link to
the site of contact and its location, as it is said that everything has their own place.
