    HOLOACTIVE TOUCH

    THE STORY

The HoloActive Touch project is part and one of thehighlights of BMW’s sculpture car which waspresented at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) inLas Vegas in 2017. With this futuristic concept, BMWwanted to give a glimpse at what transportation mightbecome in a couple of years and how the human-carinteraction will be revolutionized. And that should notonly apply to the driving and controlling of the car butfurther to an integral immersive and interactiveexperience for the users.

    THE CHALLENGE THE SOLUTION

In time for the CES, we had developed a fully workingand never-seen, highly innovative solution thatprivileged users were able to try out. Many millions ofother people were able to catch a glimpse at thetechnology by watching the massive media coverageit generated. The hologram itself was projected froma screen through a special mirror into the space infront of the car’s middle console. We worked withdepths camera to track the position of the user’sfingers to trigger interaction such as the pushing of aholographic button. The feedback the user receivedwas created by a underlying ultrasonic array, whichwould create vibration in the air at the given finger tipposition.

In future times of autonomous cars, the user will nolonger be occupied by operating the car. He or she willbe able to attend to personal matters during thejourney and interact with the vehicle in new ways. Inorder to make this human-car communication uniqueand immersive, Motius developed an interactivehologram based system with haptic feedback tomanage the car and enjoy its multimedia offerings. The main challenges during the development of thehologram floating in the air, were the short time frameas well as the combination and calibration of twoindependent coordinate systems to enable hapticfeedbackonthefinger.

    THE STORY

In this project our client, a worldwide insurancecompany, had two goals:

    1. Build a scalable system that allows toprogressively automate customer communicationwith chatbots

    3. Create a solution that does not requireprogramming skills to add a new user story to theexisting portfolio

    THE CHALLENGE

As we approached this problem, we had a firstmeeting with different departments of ourcustomer and discovered that chatbotapproaches for customer communication hadsuccessfully been established at multipleoccasions with the drawback being that rollingout such solutions at a larger scale was alwaysextremely challenging as every new user journeyor even just a minor change in the existing onesrequired programming knowledge to makeadaptions.

    THE SOLUTION

Together we came up with the idea to develop a graphical editor that would allow anyone tocreate new chatbots by just dragging a few questions onto a canvas and connecting themwith potential answers from the user. Deploying one of these newly created chatbots intoproduction should be as easy as the click of a simple button. Additionally, we developed anagent interface that allows call center agents to take over conversations that a chatbot wasunable to fully answer as well as a reporting dashboard to see how well the bots perform. The developed system is fully NLP-Engine agnostic meaning that it can be driven with anyengine that support intents classification and can be communicated with through and easilyextensible set of channels. In the current version, a Webchat, Facebook Messenger,WhatsApp Messenger and SMS are included as such.

    THE STORY

The Geoffrey Project for BMW's IPA (InterconnectedPersonal Assistant) team was a technical Proof ofConcept showcasing a unique user interface:gesture recognition while driving. The use caseinvolved swiping your hand to receive or cancel aSkype for Business call with an Apple Watch as thedevice for gesture recognition.

    THE CHALLENGE

We were faced with the lack of any viablelibraries for gesture recognition for use with theApple Watch's accelerometer and gyroscopesensors.

    THE SOLUTION

Two weeks into the project we completelyoverhauled our approach by getting one of our AIengineers onboard. With his help it took about fourweeks to build an iOS app that could record trainingdata (which we did with colleagues in the office). Then we created a Keras deep learning model torecognize some predefined hand gestures like swiperight/left, tap, etc. Finally, we converted that model toApple's own CoreML model that allowed us to runthe neural network directly on the Apple Watch!

    THE STORY

The goal of this project was to build an AI that wouldbe able to judge how well a patient was using anmedical inhaler. Several steps were monitored togive a score on the patient’s performance, includingremoving the cap, shaking the inhaler, exhaling, pressing the inhaler, inhaling, and holding breath .Most of the work for this project involvedresearching and testing to find an appropriatealgorithm.

    THE CHALLENGE

We faced more than one challenge in this projectthat required us to come up with creativesolutions.. The first was how to detect if the userhad removed the cap of the inhaler and wasactually putting it into his or her mouth. Thesecond challenge was to detect if the user wasexhaling, pushing the inhaler, inhaling the powder, and holding his breath afterwards.

    THE SOLUTION

In the end, we discovered that the best way tomonitor these different steps was to have the AIrecognize the audio characteristics of each of theseactivities. This research would be further optimizedin a future project.

    THE STORY

Companies using a gamification approach for theirregional sales teams can institute clear goals, provide frequent updates of sales figures by theteam members, and increase revenue for thecompany. The sales gamification app we createdconnects regional sales teams and pits themagainst other regions, with challenges and rewardsas incentives for high performance.

    THE CHALLENGE

Sales representatives need to stay aware of newproducts that a company is launching, so theycan sell the full portfolio to their customers. Theymust also have a up-to-date knowledge ofcurrent sales numbers, and a clear idea of theirgoals. Companies are always looking for creativeways to boost sales.

    THE SOLUTION

We designed an app that encourages groups ofsales reps to compete in challenges that relate tonewly-released products. Through points and arewards system all participants could see how wellthey were doing compared to their colleagues. Theycould upload picture proof, import sales numbers, and share their results.

    THE STORY

The goal of this project was to create a mixed realityapplication from virtual reality applications. The ideawas to have the user be able to interact with a realtable in his virtual game

    THE CHALLENGE

This was a feasibility project. We started with theresearch phase that involved figuring out thepossible solutions for localization of the player, who wears a headset, in the environment andreal-time streaming solutions. If the system wastoo sluggish to react to head movement, it couldcause the user to experience “virtual realitysickness,” a kind of motion sickness. The biggestchallenge in this project from the technicalperspective was to come up with a solution thathad the lowest latency.

    THE SOLUTION

We provided our customer with a CPU-based SLAMsolution that is beneficial because it provides anembedded solution in the production phase. Weresearched different technologies for videostreaming and provided them with a workbench.Considering the end results, we advised them tochange their lenses in order to effectively enable themixed reality feature.
