IN THIS WEEK’S TIN TUC - The Highlights...
We are hosting another APAC event this
weekend – Orchestra – and there is an
opportunity for the community to see not
only our students in action but the 70 or so
students from the other 5 APAC schools in
attendance. On Saturday evening
starting at 18:30 in the Theatre, there
will be an APAC Orchestra Concert for one hour. I
highly encourage you to come, bring the children, and enjoy
this high level performance of orchestra music. It will also
give you an idea of what we are trying to achieve in our
Arts programme by raising the bar for our students. You
must have tickets so please stop by the Co-Curricular
Activities Office on the 2nd floor of the Administration
Building (B7) to get them.
I would also like to remind you that our campus will host
the HIWC Bazaar on Sunday, 23 November. While we
must give the campus over for the weekend, the benefits of
partnering with such a dynamic and worthwhile
organisation is well worth it. The projects funded from the
Audit Report for 2013-2014 School Year
The Board is pleased to advise that the
School's auditor, Ernst&Young (E&Y), has
reviewed and audited the School's financial
statements for the school year ended 31st
July 2014. The E&Y audit report states
that the financial statements give a true and
fair view of the School's financial position and
performance, and are in accordance with International
Financial Reporting Standards. The audit report can be
viewed here . Parents who wish to know more about the
financial statements are invited to contact Len Archer,
Director of Finance and Operations at [email protected].
Best regards,
Nandini Oomman, Vice Chair
Bazaar are aligned well with our expansive service
programme and we are pleased to be able to support the
effort. Plus it is a lot of fun to come and enjoy the food,
entertainment, and socializing. It is truly an international
event which is again in line with our mission, values and
beliefs. So I hope we will see you here on the 23rd.
Finally, as you will see in another part of this Tin Tuc, we
believe we have a path forward that will not only enable us
to have the library open during Saturday Soccer and
ComEd activities, but also have it open on all Saturdays
during the school year when school is in session. But the
outcome depends on the willingness of parents to give an
hour of their time on a Saturday to be a parent volunteer in
the library and ensure that things run smoothly. We hope
we get enough volunteers to be able to open the library
soon.
Respectfully,
Dr. Chip Barder, [email protected]

"Creating opportunities to transform futures"
The UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme was launched to
celebrate the School's 25th Birthday.
Our Scholars describe their experience at UNIS Hanoi as
the turning point in their lives or the shattering of a shell to
release their potential. We want to create more
opportunities to transform more futures.
Our goal is to raise $2.5 Million USD over the next five
years to create three new Scholarships in perpetuity.
Six week campaign – Between Winter Break to Tet
Break
Every family in our community will receive a personal
invitation to make a gift with clear payment options
All faculty and staff will be invited to participate and
make a gift
Every alumni family will be invited to participate and
make a gift
Gifts can be split into multiple payments
Families can pledge their gifts for 1-5 years
More than one gift can be made
Families or individuals may choose to donate
anonymously
NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL! This campaign is about
achieving our goal TOGETHER at all levels of gifts
from $1 to $+10,000.
Our Annual Campaign for The Scholarship Fund is about
what we can achieve when we all work together as a
community.
We hope that every family will make a contribution.
We hope that every teacher and staff member will
make a gift.
We hope that all our alumni families will join us and make a
donation.
Our goal is to have 100% of our families, faculty, staff and
alumni make a gift to The Scholarship Fund.
We hope to receive a range of gifts from 1 USD to
+10,000 USD and every gift will help us achieve our goal
together. Each family, each individual member of our
community can make a difference.
We can reach our first annual goal, If EVERY family made
a gift of 105 USD!
Imagine what we can achieve together! The Annual
Campaign is about a community sharing a vision and
everyone making their own contribution, at their own level,
to achieve that goal.
Only you can decide what is the right level gift for you.
We welcome gifts from companies and we will be
developing a special recognition package.
We will be actively seeking investment from companies as
we build our campaign over the next five years.
Please contact our Director of Advancement, Emma
Silva , if you would like to make a connection to The
Scholarship Fund for a corporate donation.
Our primary goal is to mobilize our own direct UNIS
Hanoi community.
However, we also accept gifts from those outside of our
School community who are inspired by the vision of our
Scholarship Programme and who want to contribute as a
Friend of the School.
We celebrate all gifts to The Scholarship Fund as
philanthropic acts of generosity.

In response to the request from the UNIS Hanoi
community, the UNIS Hanoi Librarians and Library
staff are working to coordinate a solution allowing the
Library to re-open on Saturdays for UNIS Community
members.
In order for this to occur we need your
help!
If you are already often on campus on Saturdays, or if you
just want to help out, please contact us about helping to
provide oversight for a few Saturdays or regularly, for a one
-hour shift or the entire morning.
After an orientation meeting, this exciting volunteer
opportunity will entail welcoming and signing in UNIS
Hanoi community members, making sure that everyone in
the library understands and follows library behavior and
usage guidelines, and helping the assigned UNIS Hanoi
library staff with keeping the library tidy and ready
for Monday morning classes.
A regular meeting will be held to continue orientation to
the Library (there's more here than you might think!) and to
address any issues.
We hope to have a trained group of helpers ready in the
next couple of weeks. If you are willing to volunteer in
support of the Library, please email Debby Wells-Clinton
([email protected]) or Julie Conroy
Last Friday Nov 7th in the Black Box, Singers United
preluded ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ with their own premier
performance of “ON THE RADIO”. This was a mini-
musical filled with songs over the last 50 decades, which
became famous in America through listening to the radio!
Marvelous Minh at the microphone and Jivin’ Judy along
with all cast members kept us hopping along with fun facts
about songs and music that made history.
This was a unique experience to perform ‘theatre in the
round’ in the black box where the cast had to perform to all
four sides of the audience, developing skills in stage
performance, delivering lines and using body and facial
expressions.
Singers United is a Choir mixed with elementary students in
Grades 4 and 5 who rehearsed just once a week after school
for eight weeks for this show. They worked tirelessly for
this production in lunchtimes at school and deserve every
success they achieved.
A delicious Cast Party with Parents in the ES Music room
after their performance was the concluding celebration at
the end of their ASA 1 Mini-Musical experience. Most then
moved to the theatre to watch the HS production of ‘Little
Shop of Horrors’.
Thank you to all Parents, Teachers and Staff who made the
effort to attend this musical performance and support
Singers.
Singers will gladly repeat their musical performance on
stage at 11am at the Christmas Bazaar on Sunday, Nov
23rd. See you there!
If you want to catch Singers United performances, check
out our performance dates:
Sunday, Nov 23, HIWC Bazaar at UNIS
Hanoi, 10:50 - 11:10am
Friday, Dec 5, Festive Fundraiser at UNIS
Hanoi, 5 - 7:30pm
Saturday, Dec 6, InterConintental, 3 - 6pm
To support ES Service Learning Miss Sally and Miss Ngoc
organsied a trip to Mai Dich Kindergarten where a group
from Singers United and Beginner Band had the
opportunity to interview teachers about the school's music
programme.
These students are helping to organise Festive Fundraiser:
Stars and Lights this year and will be preforming at the
event on Friday December 5th.
Part of the proceeds raised this year at Festive Fundraiser
will go towards supporting music education at this
kindergarten and building partnerships between the
kindergarten and the UNIS community.
The students worked in small groups asking prepared
questions to inquire about what kind of music program the
school currently has and what type of program they would
like to develop. The group demonstrated good
communication and inquiry skills by listening and recording
information and asking follow up questions. The students
and teachers were then invited into the kindergarten's
boardroom where they compared their findings and
enthusiastically posed further questions.
It was an exciting trip for ES Service Learning and a good
opportunity for the students to drive their own Service
Learning experience.
Krista Ramsay, ES Service Learning Coordinator
The Walkathon ASA group are just back from visiting the Blue Dragon Centre. We were shown around and got to play table

UNIS Hanoi fielded a small team of 6 riders for the 13th annual
Koto Bike Ride. UNIS Hanoi is the gold sponsor of this annual
fundraiser to support the great work that KOTO does in Hanoi.
The riders (about 250 in total) left UNIS Hanoi around 8am and
cycled 54km to Đồng Mô Lake in Ba Vi. The route was a
meandering, scenic one, taking the riders through lovely
countryside and small villages, where we were greeted by
cheering kids wanting to high five us as we rolled by.
Koto did a great job in organizing the ride, having Koto flag
people along the route to keep us on track and providing a tasty
snack part way and a lovely lunch with musical entertainment at
the finish.

Hanoi International Schools
Activities Association
On Thursday 13th November nearly one hundred Grade 4
and 5 students from four international schools participated
in a Soccer Festival hosted at UNIS Hanoi. This festival
was the first of its kind and it was very pleasing and
encouraging to see the sportsmanship on offer, level of
ability and enthusiasm on display.
Congratulations to all the UNIS Hanoi students who
participated. They conducted themselves very well on the
field, played some great soccer and ‘did the Phoenix proud’.

The World Diabetes Day 2014 campaign marks the first of
a three-year (2014-16) focus on healthy living and diabetes.
This year will specifically address the topic of healthy eating
and its importance both in the prevention of type 2 diabetes
and the effective management of diabetes to avoid
complications.
The latest estimates from the IDF Diabetes Atlas indicate
that there are 382 million people living with diabetes
worldwide. By 2035, 592 million people or one person in
ten will have the disease. A further 316 million people are
currently at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, with the
number expected to increase to almost 500 million within a
generation. What makes the pandemic particularly
menacing is that throughout much of the world, it remains
hidden. Up to half of all people with diabetes globally
remain undiagnosed.
These facts and figures reiterate the importance of urgent
action. Most cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented and
the serious complications of diabetes can be avoided
through healthy lifestyles and living environments that
encourage and facilitate healthy behavior.
The key message is to raise awareness of how the healthy
choice can be the easy choice and the various steps that
individuals can take to make informed decisions about
what they eat. Special focus is placed on the importance of
starting the day with a healthy breakfast.
An awareness to promote immediate action to protect the
health and well-being of future generations and achieve
meaningful outcomes for people with diabetes and those at
risk is the key message on International Diabetes Day.
Key messages of the campaign include:
Make healthy food the easy choice
Healthy eating: make the right choice
Healthy eating begins with breakfast.
