An Unusual Family

How big is your family? Can you imagine having Christmas or a birthday celebration with more than 60 family

members? This isn’t unusual for the Hall family of Gateshead, England. They are a big family and they all live in

the same street! Sixty-nine members of the Hall family live in Cotswold Gardens, the name of their small

street. Catherine and George Hall were the first couple to buy a house in Cotswold Gardens, in 1958. Today

their eight children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren live there. The Hall family doesn’t need to

worry if someone is ill or someone needs a babysitter. They can always call a cousin, aunt or uncle to help. Every

month there’s a celebration of birthdays, weddings, new babies and anniversaries. Gail, one of Catherine’s

daughters, is the family cook. She prepares all the family dinners with a lot of help from her relatives. On

Saturday nights, 30 of them sit down in one living room to watch their favourite TV programme. In the summer,

the family goes to South Shields to the beach. If they go this summer, they will hire a bus and travel together.

Children in the Hall family have got a lot of cousins. They all study at the same schools and cousins are often in

the same class. The Halls have got over 50 pets, including four parrots, 30 chickens, 11 dogs and four horses.

What do the neighbours think? Grace Anderson said that it was really nice having them all on the street and
