Friday Fluency
Journeys 2014 Unit 1
Student practice pages for repeated readings/fluency practice using Journeys High Frequency Words and
the Story of the Week.
Unit 1 goal is set at 5 out of 6 high frequency words and 20 words per minute on a practiced text. I use this
in my classroom, send home as homework, and test every Friday in place of my normal guided reading groups. It gives me a chance to see every one of my readers and privately coach them on ways good readers read. It is great for data collection that informs your instruction and is also useful for sharing
at data meetings and parent conferences.

Lesson 1: Friday Fluency
High-Frequency Word Check
Please practice and be ready to read these words the “fast way” (2-3 seconds, no sounding out.) These “sight words”
are meant to be memorized so that you recognize them “on sight.” Multiple re-readings will help you to be ready.
