TRANSCRIPT

The ark of God (also called “the ark of the covenant”) was an incredibly important symbol in the lives of God’s people. Not only was the ark the original container for the Ten Commandments, it symbolized God’s presence with His people.

God gave Moses instructions in Exodus 25 for creating the ark. It was made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. God forbade anyone from touching the ark, so it was carried by two poles. God would speak to Moses from between two golden cherubim on top of the ark, which was called the mercy seat. (See Num. 7:89.)

The Philistines were a near-constant threat to Israel during the time of the judges. Under the leadership of Samuel, the Israelites went out to fight the Philistines. But the Israelites were defeated because of their sin.

The elders of Israel realized that it was God who allowed them to be defeated. God hadn’t fought for them against the Philistines. So they did what seemed logical; they took the ark—the symbol of God’s presence—and carried it to the battlefield. But the ark was not a good luck charm. Not only was Israel defeated, the Philistines captured the ark and killed Eli’s sons. When Eli heard the news, he fell over and died.

With the victory, the Philistines concluded that their god, Dagon, was better than the God of Israel. They moved the ark to Dagon’s temple, where God showed His power over Dagon. (See 1 Sam. 5:1-5.) As the ark moved between Philistine cities, God afflicted the people and made them sick.

Though the Philistines won the battle by capturing the ark, God afflicted them to show His power over their god. God received glory through the Israelites’ defeat. This points to the victory of God’s Son on the cross. The people thought they had stopped Jesus by killing Him on the cross, but by His death, Jesus saved the world and brought glory to God.

The Ark Was Captured1 Samuel 4–5

The people of Israel did not get along with the Philistines. The people of Israel fought a battle against the Philistines, but the Philistines killed about four thousand Israelites, and the Philistines won.

The leaders in Israel said, “Why did God let us lose the battle against the Philistines?” In the past, God had helped the Israelites defeat their enemies. Instead of asking God what they had done wrong, the Israelites decided to take the ark of the covenant—a wooden box covered in gold that reminded them God was with them—and carry it to the battlefield.

Some of the men went to talk to Eli’s sons. Eli’s sons were priests; they were in charge of the ark of God. The men told Eli’s sons their plan to win the battle. Eli’s sons were wicked. They should have just asked God to help them fight. Instead, they took the ark of the covenant to the Israelites’ camp. When the army of Israelites saw the ark, they shouted because they were happy. Surely they would win the battle now!

The Philistines heard the shout, but they did not know what was happening. Why were the Israelites happy? They had just lost a battle. Then the Philistines heard that the ark of God was with the Israelites, and they panicked! They could fight against men, but who could fight against God?

Could the Israelites force God to help them win? No! The two groups went to battle, but the Philistines won again! They killed thousands of Israelites, including Eli the priest’s sons, and they stole the ark of God! One of the men in the battle ran to tell Eli the priest what had happened. When Eli heard the news, he fell backward in his chair, broke his neck, and died.

The Philistines took the ark of God to a temple where they worshiped Dagon (DAY gahn), a false god. They put the ark next to a

statue of Dagon. The next morning, the Philistines entered the temple and saw that Dagon’s statue was facedown in front of the ark of God. They set the statue back up where it belonged. The next day, it was facedown again. This time, the head and hands were broken off.

Wherever the ark of God was, God punished the people living in that city. God caused a lot of trouble for the Philistines. The Philistines got really sick, and they wanted to get rid of the ark because they knew God was responsible for their suffering. When they moved the ark to another city, everyone in that city got sick. So they moved the ark to a third city. Then everyone in that city got sick too. The Philistines were afraid. They didn’t want God to punish them anymore, so they decided to send the ark of God back to the Israelites, where it belonged.

Christ Connection: The ark of God was important to the Israelites because it reminded God’s people that God was with them. Years later, God gave His people something greater than a sign that He was with them; God gave them His Son, Jesus,—God in the flesh. One of Jesus’ names is Immanuel, which means “God with us.”

Welcome timeGreet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Invite kids to share about an item that is important to them. What is the object? Why is it important?

Activity page (5 minutes)Guide boys and girls to use their Bibles to complete the activity page “The Ark of the Covenant Crossword.” Say  • The ark of the covenant is called “the ark of God”

and “the ark of the Lord’s covenant” in the Bible.• The ark was very important to the Israelites.

Session starter (10 minutes)Option 1: Capture the boxPlay a classroom-appropriate version of “Capture the Flag” using a box instead of a flag. For safety reasons, explain that running is not allowed and will result in disqualification.

First, guide kids to select a home base. Ask another adult helper to guide kids into the hall or to close their eyes. Hide the box in the classroom. Allow teams to spread

out and—when given the command go—to search for the box. A team may steal the box if two members of the team simultaneously tag the player with the box. The first team to return the box to home wins the round.

You may choose to allow kids to take turns hiding the box on additional rounds of the game.Say  • In today’s Bible story, a very important item was

stolen from the Israelites.

Option 2: Cotton swab tossTape a small square on the floor. Also tape a long line for kids to stand behind approximately six feet away. Place the mystery box nearby. Allow kids to see the mystery box before playing.

Provide each kid with five cotton swabs. Allow each kid to toss her cotton swabs and try to land each one perfectly inside the small square. The kid who lands the most cotton swabs perfectly inside the square will receive the mystery box. The mystery box is a reminder of something very good.

Allow kids to open the mystery box and reveal the empty candy wrapper.Say  • What’s so great about candy?

• Is the empty candy wrapper as good as actual candy? No, but it reminds you of the candy and how good candy is.

• In today’s Bible story, the Israelites had a reminder of God’s presence called the ark of the covenant. We will see what happened when the Israelites treated the ark like it was some type of good luck charm.

Provide each kid with a piece of candy.

Introduce the session (1 minute)[Large Group Leader enters carrying a big box.]Leader  • Whew! That box is heavy. Mr. Homes said it

contains some very important evidence for one of his cases. You have done a great job the last two weeks helping Mr. Homes solve some of his mystery cases. He is very grateful for your help. Are you all ready to find out what today’s mystery big picture question is? Yeah! We should look at our case file board and find our question.

Big picture question (2 minutes)Leader  • No, this isn’t it. It’s not here. I don’t see our

mystery question anywhere. Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Are you thinking what I’m thinking? You are? Great! I’m thinking we should look inside this box Mr. Homes had me carry. Maybe we will find our mystery big picture question and where in the Bible we need to look to find our next hint of Christ.

Ham it up for a minute or two as you pull from the box random objects like a stuffed animal, an empty balloon, a bubble wand, a pot, a dust cloth, a can of spinach, a shoe, a water bottle, and so forth.Leader  • Oh wait, here it is. Way down in the bottom of

the box. I got it! It’s our mystery big picture question! Our question is, Why was the ark of God important? The ark of God is another name for the ark of covenant. Who remembers when the Israelites built the ark of God?

Timeline map (3 minutes)On the timeline map, identify “The Tabernacle Was Built” Bible story for kids. Also point out “The Israelites Crossed the Red Sea,” “The Bronze Snake,” and “The Ten Commandments” stories when you mention what was inside the ark.Leader  • The ark of the covenant was one of the items in

the tabernacle. God gave Moses specific instructions for building the ark. It had to be exactly so many inches long, and exactly so many inches wide. It was covered in gold. When the ark was in the holy of holies of the tabernacle, God’s presence would come down between the two cherubim on the ark and meet with Moses.

The ark was very important to the Israelites. Inside the ark of the covenant were three things: a jar of manna, Aaron’s rod that budded and produced almonds, and the Ten Commandments. When our story begins today, the Ten Commandment tablets were still inside the ark. Our timeline says that today’s story, “The Ark Was Captured,” is in 1 Samuel 4–5. Open your Bibles to 1 Samuel 4. Let’s discover the answer to our mystery big picture question, locate a new hint of Christ, and help Mr. Homes solve another case.

LifeWay

Tell the Bible story (9 minutes)Open your Bible to 1 Samuel 4 and tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video “The Ark Was Captured.”Leader  • The Israelites forgot what was really important

about the ark. The ark of the covenant or ark of God was not a good luck charm. The Israelites couldn’t just carry it around and take it wherever they were fighting so they could win the battle. That didn’t honor God. The Israelites didn’t glorify God. They didn’t seek His instructions about the battle. They formed their own plan and it failed. Some of the Israelites died, including Eli’s two sinful sons. The Philistines stole the ark of God. But God is all-powerful. He showed the Philistines that He is the one true God.

Eventually the Philistines did send the ark of God back to the Israelites. They were afraid and tired of being sick because they had the ark.

The Israelites learned an important lesson about the ark of the covenant. Remember our mystery question? Why was the ark of God important? The answer is, The ark reminded the Israelites of God’s promise to be with His people. God wanted His people to know Him. He wanted His people to follow Him. God didn’t want the people to carry the ark around as a way to defeat their enemies. God wanted His people to ask for and follow His instructions on how to defeat their enemies.

God loved His people and wanted them to understand He was with them. That is why He gave them the ark, but the ark was not God. The ark was a hint of Christ. God sent Jesus to physically be with God’s people. Jesus healed, fed, loved, forgave, and died for them. Jesus was God present with His people. He is Immanuel.

The Gospel: God’s Plan for Me (optional)Using Scripture and the guide provided, explain to the kids how to become a Christian. Encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.

Key passage (5 minutes)Leader  • Do you remember when our key passage was told

to Eli? Eli was told that his family would not continue to serve as priests. He was told that both of his sons would die on the same day. That is what happened in today’s Bible story. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died at the battle. Then Eli died when he was told that his sons were dead. God was going to raise up a new priest, a faithful priest. Would anyone like to quote the key passage for us?

Select one or two kids to try. Praise their effort. Lead the entire group to say the key passage. Guide boys and girls to sing “Raise Up.”

Sing (5 minutes)Leader  • You did some great detective work today. What

was our mystery big picture question? Why was the ark of God important? And what was the answer? The ark reminded the Israelites of God’s promise to be with His people. Great! Let’s stand together and sing our theme song. God is always with us. He is here to help us win any battle, as long as we look to Him to guide us.

Sing “Center of It.”

How did the Israelites treat the ark of God? Did they honor God with their choice or did they sin? Why was the ark of God important? The ark reminded the Israelites of God’s promise to be with His people.

Prayer (2 minutes)Leader  • Mr. Homes will be so excited to see the work you

have done. Three cases solved in three weeks! That is a pretty impressive record. Does anyone remember what three hints of Christ we discovered in the Bible?

The Gospel: God’s Plan for MeAsk kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify

that the word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.

God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean.

We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)

God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9.

Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18.

We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He’s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.

Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus.

Key passage activity (5 minutes)Write the key passage on strips of paper or index cards. Place the papers inside a box. Form teams. Each team will take turns sending one person to the “ark.” Players must stand by the box with their hands behind their backs.

When you give the command, the first person to touch the box may open it to retrieve one card. Once players retrieve all of the cards from the box, guide teams to work together to assemble the passage in the correct order. Say  • God wants all of His people to faithfully follow Him.

Bible story review & Bible skills (10 minutes)Guide boys and girls to locate 1 Samuel 4 in their Bibles. Ask for volunteers to read verses 1-5.Say  • What did the Israelites say would save them from

their enemies? (the ark of the covenant, 1 Sam. 4:3)• What should the leaders of Israel have done when they were defeated? Yes, they should have talked with God about the situation.

Activity choice (10 minutes)Option 1: Wrong hand drawingsGuide kids to play a drawing game by using their non-dominant writing hand. (If right handed, they will draw with their left hand.) Kids will choose a slip of paper from the bag to reveal something to draw and what the object represents. The remaining kids will guess both the object and what it represents.

Sample ideas: wedding ring/marriage, Christmas tree/Christmas, heart/love, cross/Easter or salvation, rainbow/God’s covenant with Noah, stars/God’s covenant with Abraham, soap/cleanliness.Say  • Each of the pictures you drew reminded us of

something else—a greater event or bigger promise. The ark of the covenant was a reminder for the Israelite people.

• Why was the ark of God important? The ark reminded the Israelites of God’s promise to be with His people.

Option 2: Tissue box encouragementDecorate tissue boxes to donate to a local shelter or assistance ministry. Wrap the tissue box with construction paper or solid-colored wrapping paper. Secure with tape. Allow kids to decorate with Scripture and the gospel plan.

For safety reasons, ask kids not to write their names or personal information on the boxes. You may allow them to write the church name on the box. Kids may also decorate using stickers or sticky foam shapes.Say  • Why was the ark of God important? The ark

• When people see the tissue box you made, they will see the message of the gospel. It will remind some people of the hope we have as Christians. For others who have not heard about or believed in Jesus, it is a way to share the gospel with them. What are some other ways you can share the message of Jesus with people?
